"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alleged 28s gang boss Ralph Stanfield and his wife Nicole Johnson are expected to remain in custody for at least another week after they appeared in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court following their arrests a few days ago.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The case against them, based on two others they have been charged with, is starting to suggest links between previous matters involving illegal firearm issues and a gang connected to the 28s, dating back several years.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also reflects rather poorly on the City of Cape Town which has been involved in business with Johnson.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stanfield and Johnson were </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-09-29-alleged-28s-boss-ralph-stanfield-and-his-wife-arrested-in-cape-town-crackdown/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">detained in their home in the upmarket Cape Town suburb of Constantia</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Friday 29 September 2023.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1880853\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Stanfield-01.jpg\" alt=\"Ralph Stanfield, police\" width=\"720\" height=\"464\" /> <em>There was a heavy police presence at the Cape Town Magistrates' Court where Ralph Stanfield appeared for Ayepyep extortion spat, on 2 October 2023. (Photo: Shelley Christians)</em></p>\r\n<h4><b>Four accused</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They appeared in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Monday 2 October along with two other accused, Denver Booysen and Johannes Abrahams.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Booysen and Abrahams were arrested the day after Stanfield and Johnson were taken into custody.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are trying to be released from state custody on bail, but it is expected they will be kept behind bars at least until their next court appearance on 9 October 2023.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Together, the group faces charges including motor vehicle theft, assault, robbery and fraud.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stanfield also faces an illegal firearm possession charge.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Heavy cop presence</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National police commissioner Fannie Masemola and Police Minister Bheki Cele who arrived with eight police officers as apparent security, sat in the courtroom watching the four as they made their way into the dock.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Cele later on Monday 2 October planned to visit the families of police officers murdered in Cape Town.)</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1880857\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Stanfield-04.jpg\" alt=\"Bheki Cele \" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" /> <em>Minister of Police Bheki Cele arrives at the Cape Town Magistrates' Court where Ralph Stanfield appeared, on 2 October 2023. (Photo: Shelley Christians)</em></p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There were several more police officers stationed outside the court building.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During court proceedings, which photographers were not allowed to capture, the legal representative for the accused, Ross McKernan, said Stanfield had no previous convictions. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“There are no pending warrants of arrests. He was given R50,000 bail in 2014 and he has been appearing in and out of court for 29 months (since 2017) till now.” </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for Johnson, McKernan said she also had no previous convictions and, like Stanfield, was also once detained in a 2014 case.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1880866\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/ED_468074.jpg\" alt=\" Ralph Stanfield, Nicole Johnson\" width=\"720\" height=\"360\" /> <em>File photo: Ralph Stanfield and his wife Nicole Johnson are seen at the Cape Town Regional Court on 16 September 2023. (Photo: Gallo Images / Die Burger / Jaco Marais)</em></p>\r\n<h4><b>Health concerns</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McKennan said Johnson was recently admitted to a Cape Town hospital and was discharged a day before her arrest.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without detailing her health issues, he said she was recovering and, together with the fact she was the mother of two children, aged 15 and 17 years, her condition needed to be taken into account.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Johnson was remanded to the hospital section of Pollsmoor prison.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McKennan said that Booysen handed himself over to the police on Saturday 30 September 2023.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He added that Abrahams “has no previous convictions [and] he is also on warning pending the current matter.”</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1880860\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Stanfield-07.jpg\" alt=\"Eric Ntabazalila \" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" /> <em>NPA spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila speaks to media after Ralph Stanfield appeared at the Cape Town Magistrates' Court on 2 October 2023. (Photo: Shelley Christians)</em></p>\r\n<h4><b>Throwback to The Firm</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coincidentally, Johannes Abrahams was </span><a href=\"https://www.iol.co.za/news/south-africa/gang-boss-stanfield-released-on-bail-69071\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the name of a bodyguard to Stanfield’s uncle Colin Stanfield</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stanfield, who died in 2004, headed up the gang conglomerate The Firm, which has a strong 28s membership.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Johannes Abrahams and Colin Stanfield together once faced a murder charge relating to a killing that happened in the Cape Town suburb of Valhalla Park in 1995.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parts of Valhalla Park are known as strongholds of the 28s gang.</span>\r\n<h4><b>City of Cape Town and criminal accused</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier this year </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reported that Stanfield’s name cropped up in an investigation relating to </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-03-30-awol-malusi-booi-out-in-the-cold-following-suspension-from-all-da-activities/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Malusi Booi</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who in March was fired from the post of mayoral committee member for human settlements after his City of Cape Town office was raided as part of a fraud and corruption investigation.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Read more in Daily Maverick:</b><a 400;\"> recently also reported that the City of Cape Town was doing </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-06-08-ayepyep-to-state-capture-the-western-capes-chronically-converging-gang-and-security-problems/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">business with Glomix House Brokers</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is where Valhalla Park again crops up.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glomix, whose director is Johnson, is building 204 houses in Valhalla Park in a project expected to conclude next year.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This now means the City of Cape Town is reliant on a company, Glomix, linked to an accused, Johson, who faces charges in two different court cases.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second case Johnson is an accused in relates to gun licences and involves Stanfield and others.</span>\r\n<h4><b>‘Reunited’ via criminal charges</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All four accused who appeared together in court on Monday — or their names, at least — have previously been referenced in another case relating to allegations of fraudulent firearms and police corruption.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That case stems from 2014 and was likely what McKernan was referring to when he said Stanfield and Johnson faced legal issues stemming from then.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In that case, it was alleged that police officers had fraudulently created firearm licences for suspects, including Stanfield and others, who did not follow the legal procedures entitling them to such documents.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The provisional charge sheet in that matter lists 23 accused including Stanfield, Johnson, Abrahams and Booysen. </span>\r\n\r\n<b>Read more in Daily Maverick:</b> <a police officers linked to the </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-06-01-a-fire-hazard-plus-thousands-of-firearm-licence-fraud-suspects-sas-gun-control-chaos/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Central Firearm Registry</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> — Priscilla Mangyani, Billy April and Mary Cartwright — handed gun licences to Stanfield and others who had no legal right to such paperwork.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is expected to resume in the Khayelitsha Priority Crimes Court in December.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Arms cache discovery</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, the name Johannes Abrahams has previously surfaced in a third case.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In that case, one Johannes Abrahams (it was not immediately clear if it is the same one who appeared in court with Stanfield on Monday) was reportedly among those </span><a href=\"https://www.news24.com/news24/siblings-father-nabbed-for-arms-cache-released-on-r20-000-bail-20161103\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">arrested in connection with an arms cache</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> discovered in Valhalla Park in October 2016.</span>\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n<iframe style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https://www.facebook.com/plugins/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FSAPoliceService%2Fposts%2Fpfbid04ymnkC7ftQViGcnj8HBBXzX7B5ahph6iSVz5XYLKUT93JEudFvyhnHqKfBGWk3uEl&show_text=true&width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"792\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"></iframe>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the time, the South African Police Service had said: “Over 250 firearms, ammunition and an undisclosed amount of cash have already been seized and are being processed. Four individuals have been arrested…</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“We are confident that this cache will assist us in clamping down on the scourge of gangsterism and in reducing the stubborn contact crime trends which affect our communities, such as murder and vehicle hijacking.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is not clear what came of that case.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Ayepyep and dodgy dealing allegations</b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stanfield and Johnson recently faced other problems.</span>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reported extensively on that saga that revolved around involving the </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-05-31-beyond-dj-sumbodys-murhttps:/www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-05-31-beyond-dj-sumbodys-murder-business-tensions-underworld-fears-and-a-court-order/der-business-tensions-underworld-fears-and-a-court-order/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ayepyep Lifestyle Lounge in Cape Town</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a venue located on Kloof Street in the city.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In June 2023 its former co-owner Kagiso Setsetse lodged a criminal complaint with police about Ayepyep Cape Town as he alleged Stanfield, involved in providing it with security, and Johnson, its general manager, were trying to dominate it.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The venue closed in August as Setsetse’s allegations ramped up.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Read more in Daily Maverick:</b> <a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-08-16-fear-violence-and-extortion-in-cape-town-luxury-venue-ayepyep-closes-amid-claims-of-gangsterism-and-threats/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fear, violence and extortion in Cape Town — luxury venue Ayepyep closes amid claims of gangsterism and threats</span></a>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It reopened again late in September when </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-09-21-legal-settlement-cape-town-luxury-venue-ayepyep-to-reopen-after-gang-and-extortion-accusations-spat/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a legal settlement</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> saw Setsetse sell his one-third of shares in the business.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The deal resulted in half the business belonging to Ayepyep co-founder Oupa Sefoka’s family.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sefoka, also known as DJ Sumbody, was </span><a href=\"https://www.news24.com/citypress/news/amapiano-producer-dj-sumbody-passes-away-20221120\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">murdered in a shooting</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Johannesburg in November 2022.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The other half is owned by Johsnon’s mother (and Stanfield’s mother-in-law), Barbara Johnson. </span><b>DM</b>",

"description": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alleged 28s gang boss Ralph Stanfield and his wife Nicole Johnson are expected to remain in custody for at least another week after they appeared in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court following their arrests a few days ago.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The case against them, based on two others they have been charged with, is starting to suggest links between previous matters involving illegal firearm issues and a gang connected to the 28s, dating back several years.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also reflects rather poorly on the City of Cape Town which has been involved in business with Johnson.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stanfield and Johnson were </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-09-29-alleged-28s-boss-ralph-stanfield-and-his-wife-arrested-in-cape-town-crackdown/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">detained in their home in the upmarket Cape Town suburb of Constantia</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Friday 29 September 2023.</span>\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_1880853\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"720\"]<img class=\"size-full wp-image-1880853\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Stanfield-01.jpg\" alt=\"Ralph Stanfield, police\" width=\"720\" height=\"464\" /> <em>There was a heavy police presence at the Cape Town Magistrates' Court where Ralph Stanfield appeared for Ayepyep extortion spat, on 2 October 2023. (Photo: Shelley Christians)</em>[/caption]\r\n<h4><b>Four accused</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They appeared in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Monday 2 October along with two other accused, Denver Booysen and Johannes Abrahams.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Booysen and Abrahams were arrested the day after Stanfield and Johnson were taken into custody.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are trying to be released from state custody on bail, but it is expected they will be kept behind bars at least until their next court appearance on 9 October 2023.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Together, the group faces charges including motor vehicle theft, assault, robbery and fraud.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stanfield also faces an illegal firearm possession charge.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Heavy cop presence</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National police commissioner Fannie Masemola and Police Minister Bheki Cele who arrived with eight police officers as apparent security, sat in the courtroom watching the four as they made their way into the dock.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Cele later on Monday 2 October planned to visit the families of police officers murdered in Cape Town.)</span>\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_1880857\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"720\"]<img class=\"size-full wp-image-1880857\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Stanfield-04.jpg\" alt=\"Bheki Cele \" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" /> <em>Minister of Police Bheki Cele arrives at the Cape Town Magistrates' Court where Ralph Stanfield appeared, on 2 October 2023. (Photo: Shelley Christians)</em>[/caption]\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There were several more police officers stationed outside the court building.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During court proceedings, which photographers were not allowed to capture, the legal representative for the accused, Ross McKernan, said Stanfield had no previous convictions. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“There are no pending warrants of arrests. (Photo: Gallo Images / Die Burger / Jaco Marais)</em>[/caption]\r\n<h4><b>Health concerns</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McKennan said Johnson was recently admitted to a Cape Town hospital and was discharged a day before her arrest.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without detailing her health issues, he said she was recovering and, together with the fact she was the mother of two children, aged 15 and 17 years, her condition needed to be taken into account.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Johnson was remanded to the hospital section of Pollsmoor prison.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McKennan said that Booysen handed himself over to the police on Saturday 30 September 2023.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He added that Abrahams “has no previous convictions [and] he is also on warning pending the current matter.”</span>\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_1880860\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"720\"]<img class=\"size-full wp-image-1880860\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Stanfield-07.jpg\" alt=\"Eric Ntabazalila \" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" /> <em>NPA spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila speaks to media after Ralph Stanfield appeared at the Cape Town Magistrates' Court on 2 October 2023. (Photo: Shelley Christians)</em>[/caption]\r\n<h4><b>Throwback to The Firm</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coincidentally, Johannes Abrahams was </span><a href=\"https://www.iol.co.za/news/south-africa/gang-boss-stanfield-released-on-bail-69071\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the name of a bodyguard to Stanfield’s uncle Colin Stanfield</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stanfield, who died in 2004, headed up the gang conglomerate The Firm, which has a strong 28s membership.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Johannes Abrahams and Colin Stanfield together once faced a murder charge relating to a killing that happened in the Cape Town suburb of Valhalla Park in 1995.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parts of Valhalla Park are known as strongholds of the 28s gang.</span>\r\n<h4><b>City of Cape Town and criminal accused</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier this year </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reported that Stanfield’s name cropped up in an investigation relating to </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-03-30-awol-malusi-booi-out-in-the-cold-following-suspension-from-all-da-activities/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Malusi Booi</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who in March was fired from the post of mayoral committee member for human settlements after his City of Cape Town office was raided as part of a fraud and corruption investigation.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Read more in Daily Maverick:</b><a 400;\"> recently also reported that the City of Cape Town was doing </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-06-08-ayepyep-to-state-capture-the-western-capes-chronically-converging-gang-and-security-problems/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">business with Glomix House Brokers</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is where Valhalla Park again crops up.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glomix, whose director is Johnson, is building 204 houses in Valhalla Park in a project expected to conclude next year.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This now means the City of Cape Town is reliant on a company, Glomix, linked to an accused, Johson, who faces charges in two different court cases.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second case Johnson is an accused in relates to gun licences and involves Stanfield and others.</span>\r\n<h4><b>‘Reunited’ via criminal charges</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All four accused who appeared together in court on Monday — or their names, at least — have previously been referenced in another case relating to allegations of fraudulent firearms and police corruption.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That case stems from 2014 and was likely what McKernan was referring to when he said Stanfield and Johnson faced legal issues stemming from then.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In that case, it was alleged that police officers had fraudulently created firearm licences for suspects, including Stanfield and others, who did not follow the legal procedures entitling them to such documents.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The provisional charge sheet in that matter lists 23 accused including Stanfield, Johnson, Abrahams and Booysen. </span>\r\n\r\n<b>Read more in Daily Maverick:</b> <a police officers linked to the </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-06-01-a-fire-hazard-plus-thousands-of-firearm-licence-fraud-suspects-sas-gun-control-chaos/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Central Firearm Registry</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> — Priscilla Mangyani, Billy April and Mary Cartwright — handed gun licences to Stanfield and others who had no legal right to such paperwork.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is expected to resume in the Khayelitsha Priority Crimes Court in December.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Arms cache discovery</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, the name Johannes Abrahams has previously surfaced in a third case.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In that case, one Johannes Abrahams (it was not immediately clear if it is the same one who appeared in court with Stanfield on Monday) was reportedly among those </span><a href=\"https://www.news24.com/news24/siblings-father-nabbed-for-arms-cache-released-on-r20-000-bail-20161103\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">arrested in connection with an arms cache</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> discovered in Valhalla Park in October 2016.</span>\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n<iframe style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https://www.facebook.com/plugins/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FSAPoliceService%2Fposts%2Fpfbid04ymnkC7ftQViGcnj8HBBXzX7B5ahph6iSVz5XYLKUT93JEudFvyhnHqKfBGWk3uEl&show_text=true&width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"792\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"></iframe>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the time, the South African Police Service had said: “Over 250 firearms, ammunition and an undisclosed amount of cash have already been seized and are being processed. Four individuals have been arrested…</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“We are confident that this cache will assist us in clamping down on the scourge of gangsterism and in reducing the stubborn contact crime trends which affect our communities, such as murder and vehicle hijacking.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is not clear what came of that case.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Ayepyep and dodgy dealing allegations</b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stanfield and Johnson recently faced other problems.</span>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reported extensively on that saga that revolved around involving the </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-05-31-beyond-dj-sumbodys-murhttps:/www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-05-31-beyond-dj-sumbodys-murder-business-tensions-underworld-fears-and-a-court-order/der-business-tensions-underworld-fears-and-a-court-order/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ayepyep Lifestyle Lounge in Cape Town</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a venue located on Kloof Street in the city.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In June 2023 its former co-owner Kagiso Setsetse lodged a criminal complaint with police about Ayepyep Cape Town as he alleged Stanfield, involved in providing it with security, and Johnson, its general manager, were trying to dominate it.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The venue closed in August as Setsetse’s allegations ramped up.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Read more in Daily Maverick:</b> <a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-08-16-fear-violence-and-extortion-in-cape-town-luxury-venue-ayepyep-closes-amid-claims-of-gangsterism-and-threats/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fear, violence and extortion in Cape Town — luxury venue Ayepyep closes amid claims of gangsterism and threats</span></a>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It reopened again late in September when </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-09-21-legal-settlement-cape-town-luxury-venue-ayepyep-to-reopen-after-gang-and-extortion-accusations-spat/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a legal settlement</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> saw Setsetse sell his one-third of shares in the business.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The deal resulted in half the business belonging to Ayepyep co-founder Oupa Sefoka’s family.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sefoka, also known as DJ Sumbody, was </span><a href=\"https://www.news24.com/citypress/news/amapiano-producer-dj-sumbody-passes-away-20221120\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">murdered in a shooting</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Johannesburg in November 2022.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The other half is owned by Johsnon’s mother (and Stanfield’s mother-in-law), Barbara Johnson. </span><b>DM</b>",
