On the day, the small building had been teeming with patients queuing for TB and Aids medication and mothers and children waiting for primary healthcare. They were physically distanced as it was during hard lockdown in 2020. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortunately, the glass didn’t shatter and nobody was hurt. </span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1151489\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/MC-Carmelita-Icon.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"452\" /> Sister Carmelita Kok is one of South Africa’s six Integrity Icons for 2021. Driven by global nonprofit organisation Accountability Lab, the campaign aims to ‘name and fame‘ civil servants who embody integrity and go beyond the call of duty in their communities. (Photo: Steve Lawrence)</p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kok (43) recalls how a disgruntled patient threw the brick. He has since apologised and she has forgiven him. Today he is one of her “favourites” — such is her empathy and compassion. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“I’ve got this one client,” she says. “We are not allowed to mention names. When Covid-19 started last year, he was at Strandfontein — the City of Cape Town erected these tents for displaced people, you know. And some of them didn’t want to live there and moved out. So this one client came to me all the way from Strandfontein. And I remember, I was working that day, and he was just very </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deurmekaar</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> [confused].</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1151490\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/MC-Carmelita-Icon_1.jpg\" alt=\"integrity icon carmelita kok\" width=\"720\" height=\"384\" /> Sister Carmelita Kok says primary healthcare is important — not everyone can afford medical aid. I was one of few staff at the clinic and there were a lot of clients. And I told him, you can see that we are busy. Please, can I give you an appointment? Or just hang on, until I see you later. But he demanded that I see him immediately. Then he actually threw a brick at my window.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kok is speaking to </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maverick Citizen</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from her home in Da Gama Park, south of Cape Town, which she shares with her husband, daughter, son and two stepsons. She tested positive for Covid-19 five days earlier, but has weathered the worst symptoms. </span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1151491\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/MC-Carmelita-Icon_2.jpg\" alt=\"integrity icon carmelita kok\" width=\"720\" height=\"414\" /> Sister Carmelita Kok says she became a nurse by chance. But this behaviour, I’m not going to tolerate it, because there are mothers and children sitting here at the clinic.’</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“And then he left, and I think it was two weeks after that, he came back to the clinic. He was standing at the gate and I asked him, ‘What are you doing here?’ He said, ‘No, sister, please…’ I said, ‘No, you’re going to apologise.’ I was very upset with him. He said ‘No, sister, I’m really sorry. I was just angry that day. And I apologise for hurting you and the other clients and all of it.’ ” </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She laughs, adding: “Let me tell you, he has become one of my best clients. He actually finished his six months, because he was on TB treatment.
