"contents": "Seven people have been <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">arrested and detained in connection with the murder of South African rapper Kiernan Jarryd Forbes, known professionally as AKA, and </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">his former manager and friend, Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Police Minister Bheki Cele said late on Tuesday night that six people were arrested. We have the coordinator, who is basically the master of everything. He is in custody. We have two shooters. We have two spotters — one of the spotters was inside the restaurant observing, watching Mr Forbes and his friends — as well as the organiser of firearms and vehicles, because the vehicle used as a getaway and firearms used to shoot, they were all hired,” </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mkhwanazi said. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the spotters initially followed Forbes from the airport on arrival, to his hotel and the Wish on Florida restaurant, </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mkhwanazi said. Police investigations have led to the have arrest of SIX people including the shooters, spotters, and the coordinator of the hit. <a href=\"https://t.co/3rcHfqLY73\">pic.twitter.com/3rcHfqLY73</a></p>\r\n— Lirandzu Themba (@LirandzuThemba) <a href=\"https://twitter.com/LirandzuThemba/status/1762564429953028301?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 27, 2024</a></blockquote>\r\n<script async src=\"https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"></script>\r\n<h4><b>Timeline of arrests </b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“The strategy that we employed was that after these six, we began to look for parallel cases that they were involved in, and we began to arrest them for those cases and keep them in custody but [not] charge them on the main case that we are investigating,” </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mkhwanazi said. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“The reason for that is because we wanted to make sure that we get almost all the suspects — especially the organiser of the hit.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mkhwanazi said at least four of the six suspects were involved in parallel cases. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first arrest was made on 22 April 2023 and the second on 24 October. The third suspect was arrested on 14 December. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“On 24 February 2024, after identifying the two suspects that we were looking for after chasing them the whole year, we found a house where they were hiding in Swaziland… In this case, we approached the NPA, an affidavit was prepared, and we submitted it through Interpol in order to request the authorities in Swaziland to help us catch these two. These two were arrested on Saturday morning [24 February], in Swaziland, for other cases including the Forbes case,” Mkhwanazi said.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A remaining suspect caught wind of the arrests and went on the run, Mkhwanazi said. The SAPS launched a manhunt for the final suspect until the early hours of 27 February, when the suspect’s lawyers approached the SAPS and told them the suspect would surrender. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“We were hunting them and we have a warrant of arrest,” Mkhwanazi said. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“From our investigation, it became clear that Mr Forbes was the main target. He is the one that was followed from the airport, he is the one that was followed at the hotel, he is the one that was spotted inside the restaurant </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">—</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the plan was not to shoot him in the manner that they did. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“They were going to shoot him in the vehicle, but because he stood longer outside greeting his friend, those hitmen did not want to wait, that’s why they came for him</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“The second victim [</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Motsoane] </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">—</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it was by coincidence that he was shot. </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second shooter was at quite a distance from him </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when he was shot, so we do believe that the plan was [to kill] Mr Forbes.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a possibility that other suspects would be added to the list but, as it stood, Mkhwanazi said, there was a very solid case. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The motive was not yet known, he said. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“We know how much they each received </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">—</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> how much they were paid, but we’re not going to divulge it here, because it’s part of the case.” </span><b>DM</b>\r\n\r\n<i>This article was updated at 12.50pm on Wednesday after police confirmed that a seventh suspect had been arrested. The third suspect was arrested on 14 December. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“On 24 February 2024, after identifying the two suspects that we were looking for after chasing them the whole year, we found a house where they were hiding in Swaziland… In this case, we approached the NPA, an affidavit was prepared, and we submitted it through Interpol in order to request the authorities in Swaziland to help us catch these two. These two were arrested on Saturday morning [24 February], in Swaziland, for other cases including the Forbes case,” Mkhwanazi said.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A remaining suspect caught wind of the arrests and went on the run, Mkhwanazi said. The SAPS launched a manhunt for the final suspect until the early hours of 27 February, when the suspect’s lawyers approached the SAPS and told them the suspect would surrender. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“We were hunting them and we have a warrant of arrest,” Mkhwanazi said. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“From our investigation, it became clear that Mr Forbes was the main target. He is the one that was followed from the airport, he is the one that was followed at the hotel, he is the one that was spotted inside the restaurant </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">—</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the plan was not to shoot him in the manner that they did. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“They were going to shoot him in the vehicle, but because he stood longer outside greeting his friend, those hitmen did not want to wait, that’s why they came for him</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“The second victim [</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Motsoane] </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">—</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it was by coincidence that he was shot. </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second shooter was at quite a distance from him </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when he was shot, so we do believe that the plan was [to kill] Mr Forbes.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a possibility that other suspects would be added to the list but, as it stood, Mkhwanazi said, there was a very solid case. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The motive was not yet known, he said. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“We know how much they each received </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">—</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> how much they were paid, but we’re not going to divulge it here, because it’s part of the case.” </span><b>DM</b>\r\n\r\n<i>This article was updated at 12.50pm on Wednesday after police confirmed that a seventh suspect had been arrested.
