"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The </span><a href=\"https://www.cidjournal.com/article/S0738-081X(07)00210-6/fulltext\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">products</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, promoted by media and cosmetic houses as “pigment vanishing” or “tone lightening”, have been perceived to be beneficial. In reality, most of them can be very </span><a href=\"http://www.scielo.org.za/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0038-23532016000600011\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dangerous</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is because they are acquired </span><a href=\"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/jocd.12104\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">illicitly</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and contain potent and toxic chemicals that can have bad </span><a href=\"https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/09546634.2020.1845597?scroll=top&amp;needAccess=true\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They can lead to </span><a href=\"https://www.derm.theclinics.com/article/S0733-8635(10)00135-X/fulltext\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">severe systemic complications</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like diabetes mellitus, tremors and exogenous ochronosis (dark patches of discolouration on the skin).</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several countries, including </span><a href=\"http://www.scielo.org.za/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0038-23532016000600011\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uganda, Kenya and South Africa</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, have </span><a href=\"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/jocd.12104\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">banned</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the import and sale of products containing skin lightening chemicals. Nevertheless, they remain available to consumers unlawfully because of the high demand for them.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research in various African countries has shown this practice is increasing in popularity, with a prevalence of </span><a href=\"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/ijd.12860?casa_token=xVfj-x3aCK4AAAAA%3AWN3CelFN0BvZYUqYfviefht5EPuLJh2HVfJiuDk8gIemoDmMxU7Ghlq5vRhO874eWRIYKjWem4c5bnk\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">23%</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in sub-Saharan Africa among young adults aged 16 to 30. This prompted us to investigate such a trend in South Africa. We recently conducted a </span><a href=\"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S235264752100085X\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">survey</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on 401 health science students at the University of the Western Cape.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only 12% of those in the survey used skin-lightening creams. Nevertheless, the survey gave useful insights into their reasons. Nearly half of the participants believed that family and friends were most likely to influence their behaviour. And an even higher percentage – 76% – said they thought that people who practice skin lightening do so because it gives them a more fashionable look.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There was also a clear urban-rural divide. Those living in urban settings were 10 times more likely to engage in the practice compared with people living in rural areas.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our survey also showed that men and women were equally likely to use such products.</span>\r\n\r\n<strong>Increased male users</strong>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One might expect the use of skin lighteners to be far more common among women. However, studies have shown the practice is becoming equally popular among men in several parts of the world, including </span><a href=\"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/ijd.12860?casa_token=xVfj-x3aCK4AAAAA%3AWN3CelFN0BvZYUqYfviefht5EPuLJh2HVfJiuDk8gIemoDmMxU7Ghlq5vRhO874eWRIYKjWem4c5bnk\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Africa and Asia</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In our survey 10% of the men interviewed said they used skin lightening products.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies investigating the motivations for skin lightening </span><a href=\"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2666328720300250\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">among men</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are limited. But a few provide some insights. One such </span><a href=\"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/ijd.12860?casa_token=xVfj-x3aCK4AAAAA%3AWN3CelFN0BvZYUqYfviefht5EPuLJh2HVfJiuDk8gIemoDmMxU7Ghlq5vRhO874eWRIYKjWem4c5bnk\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> conducted in 26 countries showed a prevalence among young men in African universities in countries such as Nigeria, Tunisia and South Africa.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Users said they were motivated by the “desire for fairer skin” and the “need to be attractive for their partners”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These findings were also supported by a </span><a href=\"https://www.africaknowledgeproject.org/index.php/jenda/article/view/528\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ghanaian study</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in which women stated that they found fair-skinned men more attractive.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The use of skin lightening products could also be </span><a href=\"https://www.researchgate.net/publication/331352331_Mirror_mirror_on_the_wall_who's_the_fairest_'hunk'_of_them_all_Negotiating_a_masculine_notion_of_skin_whitening_for_Malaysian_men\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">attributed</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to men becoming more interested in grooming and the maintenance of their appearance.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, the use of lightening products has </span><a href=\"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2666328720300250\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shown</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to be driven by people’s concerns about their attractiveness. They wanted to increase their self-esteem, and knew friends and family who are using skin lighteners. These factors contributed to their engagement in the practice.</span>\r\n\r\n<strong>The role of media</strong>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The media clearly also plays a powerful role. In particular, the </span><a href=\"https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/0361684310392356\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">advertising industry</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Africa has been pivotal in creating the perception that fair skin is more attractive and desirable.</span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0249286\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social media</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has also become an influential platform that several companies use to further encourage product consumerism. It would be rare to meet a student that does not have at least one social media account to use as a principal source of news and other information.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These platforms then act as a portal for influential local and international celebrities to share their latest cosmetic trends, some of which are </span><a href=\"https://www.timeslive.co.za/tshisa-live/tshisa-live/2021-11-04-khanyi-mbau-gives-how-not-to-burn-tips-to-other-skin-lightening-queens/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">very public</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about using skin lightening products. Undeniably, this makes an </span><a href=\"https://journals.ufs.ac.za/index.php/com/article/view/3299\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">impression</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on young adults.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In our study, despite few </span><a href=\"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S235264752100085X\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">participants</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> indicating that social media was a direct motivator for skin lightening practices, the subliminal influence of this platform cannot be ignored.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The </span><a href=\"https://www.cureus.com/articles/67037-skin-lightening-products-consumer-preferences-and-costs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased interest</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in skincare over the last few years has led to the </span><a href=\"http://www.sbwire.com/press-releases/skin-lightening-products-market-is-expected-to-reach-a-valuation-of-over-us-24-bn-by-the-end-of-2027-948760.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exceptional growth</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and </span><a href=\"https://theconversation.com/women-of-color-spend-more-than-8-billion-on-bleaching-creams-worldwide-every-year-153178\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">popularity</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of this market. In 2018 it was valued at $8.3 billion.</span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5345401/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Laws</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in some countries, such as South Africa, prohibit the marketing of products using terms such as “bleach”, “lighten” or “whiten”. But cosmetic and pharmaceutical companies have always, and continue to find alternative ways to advertise directly to their target consumers.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For years this target has been women, but recently there has been a clear shift toward </span><a href=\"https://www.researchgate.net/publication/331352331_Mirror_mirror_on_the_wall_who%27s_the_fairest_%27hunk%27_of_them_all_Negotiating_a_masculine_notion_of_skin_whitening_for_Malaysian_men\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">male consumers</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<strong>Awareness and safety</strong>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The skin lightening market will always be sustainable as long as the </span><a href=\"https://www.cureus.com/articles/67037-skin-lightening-products-consumer-preferences-and-costs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supply-and-demand</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> chain remains.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rising demand for harmful skin lightening products prompts the question as to whether the necessary vigilance in awareness around chemicals found in these products and their associated side effects have been illuminated enough.
