Which led to the discovery of another killing.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This ripple effect continued even after the man at the centre of it, Brian Steven Smith (52), of the Eastern Cape, was convicted of murdering two Alaskan native women in the US.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He is now also facing charges there for allegedly lying to obtain naturalisation in the US – in other words, to become a citizen.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Read more in Daily Maverick:</b> <a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2024-05-12-26s-gang-may-kill-me-uk-drug-convict-fights-sa-deportation/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">‘26s gang may kill me if you send me home’ — UK drug convict fights SA deportation</span></a>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick recently reported on a few cases of South Africans convicted of crimes abroad and what may happen, or has happened, to them since.</span>\r\n<h4><b>‘False statements’</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smith’s developing matter now adds to those.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The US Attorney’s Office for the District of Alaska issued </span><a href=\"https://www.justice.gov/usao-ak/pr/south-african-national-charged-unlawfully-obtaining-us-citizenship\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a statement</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last month detailing the new allegations against him.</span>\r\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\r\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">In 2019, Valerie Casler stole a phone from Brian Steven Smith's car, setting off a chain of events that would ultimately reveal a double murder.</p>\r\nThe stolen phone had an SD card in it. The card was labeled “Homicide at midtown Marriott.”\r\n\r\nThe phone contained disturbing images… <a href=\"https://t.co/H3WRchheoV\">pic.twitter.com/H3WRchheoV</a>\r\n\r\n— Morbid Knowledge (@Morbidful) <a href=\"https://twitter.com/Morbidful/status/1762219788602941614?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 26, 2024</a></blockquote>\r\n<script async src=\"https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"></script>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“According to court documents, between June and September 2019, [Smith] applied for and obtained naturalisation in the US by making false statements in connection to his naturalisation application,” it said.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Smith allegedly falsely responded to questions asking whether he had been involved in killing, badly hurting or sexually assaulting someone and if he had ever committed, assisted in committing or attempted to commit a crime he was not arrested for. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Smith answered ‘no’ to all these questions, when at the time of the application, he had committed related crimes, including two murders that involved torture and sexual assaults.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was therefore accused of unlawfully obtaining naturalisation in the US.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If convicted of the fresh charges relating to him allegedly lying, Smith will lose that US naturalisation status.</span>\r\n<h4><b>‘Stolen phone’ and murder footage</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Issues surrounding him stretch back several years.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the US’ Anchorage Police Department, on 30 September 2019, a citizen called officers to say they had found “an SD card containing a video of a homicide”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was </span><a href=\"https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/brian-steven-smith-alaska-murder-b2501218.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">later reported</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, though, that a woman had stolen Smith’s cellphone and copied the footage onto the memory card when she realised what it was.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Anchorage police statement continued: “The SD card contained several videos which appeared to show the assault and subsequent homicide of an adult female. Detectives with the Homicide Unit were notified and began an investigation.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was established the crime took place in the first week of September 2019 and Smith became a suspect.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Human remains</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The following month, October 2019, human remains, suspected to be the woman attacked in the video, were found near a highway.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smith was arrested.</span>\r\n\r\n<iframe style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https://www.facebook.com/plugins/video.php?height=314&href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FAnchoragePolice%2Fvideos%2F917179628664912%2F&show_text=false&width=560&t=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"314\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"></iframe>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a State of Alaska law department </span><a href=\"https://law.alaska.gov/press/releases/2024/022224-Smith.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">press statement from February 2024</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the remains were identified as those of Kathleen Henry.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“While he was being questioned, Smith admitted to killing a second victim, a year prior. That woman was identified as Veronica Abouchuk,” it said.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to an Anchorage Police Department social media post from July 2019, Abouchuk was at that stage still reported missing.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She had been homeless, and her family last saw her in July 2018.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Abouchuk was last seen at Bean’s Café [in Anchorage] in October 2018. (Photo: Supplied)</em></p>\r\n<h4><b>Double killing and torture</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In February this year Smith was convicted of murdering both Henry and Abouchuk.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Alaska’s Department of Law, he was also found guilty of “sexual assault in the second degree, tampering with evidence and misconduct involving a corpse”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was found that Smith subjected Henry “to substantial physical torture”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Henry’s Facebook profile is public and posts on it suggest she was trying to improve her life in the run-up to her murder.</span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://www.facebook.com/kathleen.henry.902/posts/pfbid0FMeTMbGL5Yvua33NqfWqwLkmZxAFnKq7sk2JRnmefpXoSBfEKE9ZTfTjT3eracLAl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One post</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, from August 2019, stated: “I need to get my life straight and act together.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Henry’s final publicly visible post from later that month included rattling hash-tagged words.</span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://www.facebook.com/kathleen.henry.902/posts/pfbid07Ah5YBvUbk3qpRpU1ta5aJs3TVoRpVaXr6GLgHwYDoKZpQaKThgzcr8trmfJG3bBl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It said</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: “I’m tough Alaska chick since 1997 until present. Keeping up with the kardashians can be mine for life. #killerandchiller”</span>\r\n<h4><b>‘Everyone dies’</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In March this year, reporting on matters including the convictions against Smith, an </span><a href=\"https://alaskapublic.org/2024/03/01/after-brian-smiths-anchorage-murder-conviction-mmip-advocates-hope-for-change/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alaska Public Media article</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> detailed how the footage from the memory card played a key role in the case against him.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The article stated: “The card, labelled ‘Homicide at midtown Marriot’, came from a sex worker, who told [cops] she found it on the ground. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“It had footage of Kathleen Henry’s torture and murder – and in the background, Smith’s chipper voice with his South African accent, gleefully narrating the footage, as he taunted Henry for being too slow to die. ‘In my movies, everyone dies,’ he said.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Only the jury, attorneys and court staff saw the footage, but everyone in the room heard the sound.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Valerie Casler, the woman who took Smith’s cellphone and saved footage from it, later told a court that the accent of the attacker stood out for her.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In apparent audio from the footage, aired on the US network </span><a href=\"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nq7VolX4BTY&t=125s\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Court TV</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a man with a South African accent can be heard repetitively saying, in a sing-song voice: “You live. You die.” </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The man also says: “Sadly, in my movies, everyone dies.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At another point he addresses someone, presumably a dying Henry, saying: “You fucked up my drinking time.”</span>\r\n<h4><b>Ninety-nine-year jail possibility</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smith faces 99 years in jail for Henry’s killing and between 30 and 99 years behind bars for murdering Abouchuk.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He is expected to be sentenced on 12 and 19 July this year.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is while facing sentencing that he has been accused of lying to obtain naturalisation in the US.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This all means that he could lose his US citizenship – and he stands to serve several years behind bars for the two killings.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An individual with the same name, Brian Smith, who said he had lived in Alaska and had been in South Africa from 1971 to 2013, was previously active on the online </span><a href=\"https://www.quora.com/profile/Brian-Smith-630\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quora</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> platform – a question-and-answer-style website.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the account under the name “Brian Smith” was labelled as </span><a href=\"https://help.quora.com/hc/en-us/articles/360000470706-Platform-Policies\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">banned</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Quora, questions and answers linked to it can still be viewed.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Expat from South Africa</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of many questions Smith replied to was: “Are there poor white communities in South Africa?”</span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://www.quora.com/profile/Brian-Smith-630\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His response</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was: “Most whites are poor. I grew up poor. While the blacks got free housing and free education and free medical, the whites have to pay. This kept whites poor.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In response to another question, Smith stated in part: “I am an expat SA living in Alaska, USA.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A reply to a question about whether “you faced racism in your life” read: “I am a white male. I face racism every day. I am blamed for things I could never have done. I am punished for things that never happened. The card was labeled “Homicide at midtown Marriott.”\r\n\r\nThe phone contained disturbing images… <a href=\"https://t.co/H3WRchheoV\">pic.twitter.com/H3WRchheoV</a>\r\n\r\n— Morbid Knowledge (@Morbidful) <a href=\"https://twitter.com/Morbidful/status/1762219788602941614?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 26, 2024</a></blockquote>\r\n<script async src=\"https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"></script>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“According to court documents, between June and September 2019, [Smith] applied for and obtained naturalisation in the US by making false statements in connection to his naturalisation application,” it said.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Smith allegedly falsely responded to questions asking whether he had been involved in killing, badly hurting or sexually assaulting someone and if he had ever committed, assisted in committing or attempted to commit a crime he was not arrested for. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Smith answered ‘no’ to all these questions, when at the time of the application, he had committed related crimes, including two murders that involved torture and sexual assaults.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was therefore accused of unlawfully obtaining naturalisation in the US.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If convicted of the fresh charges relating to him allegedly lying, Smith will lose that US naturalisation status.</span>\r\n<h4><b>‘Stolen phone’ and murder footage</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Issues surrounding him stretch back several years.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the US’ Anchorage Police Department, on 30 September 2019, a citizen called officers to say they had found “an SD card containing a video of a homicide”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was </span><a href=\"https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/brian-steven-smith-alaska-murder-b2501218.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">later reported</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, though, that a woman had stolen Smith’s cellphone and copied the footage onto the memory card when she realised what it was.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Anchorage police statement continued: “The SD card contained several videos which appeared to show the assault and subsequent homicide of an adult female. Detectives with the Homicide Unit were notified and began an investigation.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was established the crime took place in the first week of September 2019 and Smith became a suspect.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Human remains</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The following month, October 2019, human remains, suspected to be the woman attacked in the video, were found near a highway.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smith was arrested.</span>\r\n\r\n<iframe style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https://www.facebook.com/plugins/video.php?height=314&href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FAnchoragePolice%2Fvideos%2F917179628664912%2F&show_text=false&width=560&t=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"314\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"></iframe>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a State of Alaska law department </span><a href=\"https://law.alaska.gov/press/releases/2024/022224-Smith.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">press statement from February 2024</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the remains were identified as those of Kathleen Henry.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“While he was being questioned, Smith admitted to killing a second victim, a year prior. That woman was identified as Veronica Abouchuk,” it said.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to an Anchorage Police Department social media post from July 2019, Abouchuk was at that stage still reported missing.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She had been homeless, and her family last saw her in July 2018.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Abouchuk was last seen at Bean’s Café [in Anchorage] in October 2018. (Photo: Supplied)</em>[/caption]\r\n<h4><b>Double killing and torture</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In February this year Smith was convicted of murdering both Henry and Abouchuk.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Alaska’s Department of Law, he was also found guilty of “sexual assault in the second degree, tampering with evidence and misconduct involving a corpse”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was found that Smith subjected Henry “to substantial physical torture”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Henry’s Facebook profile is public and posts on it suggest she was trying to improve her life in the run-up to her murder.</span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://www.facebook.com/kathleen.henry.902/posts/pfbid0FMeTMbGL5Yvua33NqfWqwLkmZxAFnKq7sk2JRnmefpXoSBfEKE9ZTfTjT3eracLAl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One post</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, from August 2019, stated: “I need to get my life straight and act together.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Henry’s final publicly visible post from later that month included rattling hash-tagged words.</span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://www.facebook.com/kathleen.henry.902/posts/pfbid07Ah5YBvUbk3qpRpU1ta5aJs3TVoRpVaXr6GLgHwYDoKZpQaKThgzcr8trmfJG3bBl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It said</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: “I’m tough Alaska chick since 1997 until present. Keeping up with the kardashians can be mine for life. #killerandchiller”</span>\r\n<h4><b>‘Everyone dies’</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In March this year, reporting on matters including the convictions against Smith, an </span><a href=\"https://alaskapublic.org/2024/03/01/after-brian-smiths-anchorage-murder-conviction-mmip-advocates-hope-for-change/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alaska Public Media article</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> detailed how the footage from the memory card played a key role in the case against him.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The article stated: “The card, labelled ‘Homicide at midtown Marriot’, came from a sex worker, who told [cops] she found it on the ground. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“It had footage of Kathleen Henry’s torture and murder – and in the background, Smith’s chipper voice with his South African accent, gleefully narrating the footage, as he taunted Henry for being too slow to die. ‘In my movies, everyone dies,’ he said.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Only the jury, attorneys and court staff saw the footage, but everyone in the room heard the sound.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Valerie Casler, the woman who took Smith’s cellphone and saved footage from it, later told a court that the accent of the attacker stood out for her.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In apparent audio from the footage, aired on the US network </span><a href=\"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nq7VolX4BTY&t=125s\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Court TV</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a man with a South African accent can be heard repetitively saying, in a sing-song voice: “You live. You die.” </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The man also says: “Sadly, in my movies, everyone dies.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At another point he addresses someone, presumably a dying Henry, saying: “You fucked up my drinking time.”</span>\r\n<h4><b>Ninety-nine-year jail possibility</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smith faces 99 years in jail for Henry’s killing and between 30 and 99 years behind bars for murdering Abouchuk.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He is expected to be sentenced on 12 and 19 July this year.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is while facing sentencing that he has been accused of lying to obtain naturalisation in the US.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This all means that he could lose his US citizenship – and he stands to serve several years behind bars for the two killings.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An individual with the same name, Brian Smith, who said he had lived in Alaska and had been in South Africa from 1971 to 2013, was previously active on the online </span><a href=\"https://www.quora.com/profile/Brian-Smith-630\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quora</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> platform – a question-and-answer-style website.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the account under the name “Brian Smith” was labelled as </span><a href=\"https://help.quora.com/hc/en-us/articles/360000470706-Platform-Policies\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">banned</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Quora, questions and answers linked to it can still be viewed.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Expat from South Africa</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of many questions Smith replied to was: “Are there poor white communities in South Africa?”</span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://www.quora.com/profile/Brian-Smith-630\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His response</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was: “Most whites are poor. I grew up poor. While the blacks got free housing and free education and free medical, the whites have to pay. This kept whites poor.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In response to another question, Smith stated in part: “I am an expat SA living in Alaska, USA.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A reply to a question about whether “you faced racism in your life” read: “I am a white male. I face racism every day. I am blamed for things I could never have done. I am punished for things that never happened.
