A 26-year-old mother of two was axed by her abusive ex-boyfriend. A 39-year-old woman was shot by her husband.” This was retweeted 1,500 times. @KPutuma’s </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/KPutuma/status/1271000638709739520\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tweet</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provided statistics on the murder of South African women, noting: “every 3 hours a woman is murdered in South Africa.” </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">@tumelokhoabane’s tweet “SOUTH AFRICAN FEMALE LIVES MATTER!!!!” was retweeted 2,300 times and received 4,800 likes. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">@scorpiomel tweeted: “Black women are fighting for other black women, then we have to fight for our black men, then we have to fight for our black children but who the HELL is fighting for us?”. This tweet was retweeted 645 times and received 1,300 likes. “No one. No one fights for us. We are alone” responded </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/lala_khanyi/status/1271158162285043715\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">@lala_khanyi</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while @ronsta101 tweeted “</span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/ronsta101/status/1271132323518570496\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Must be God!</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">”. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another high-volume tweet was by @Cherry01_: “being a black woman is like being black twice”. This tweet received over 10,000 likes and was retweeted almost 4,000 times. </span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://twitter.com/sivmaroon/status/1271000869673275400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">@sivmaroon</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tweeted: “The reason why South African men don’t want to have real conversations about rape and GBV is because they are the problem and they know it. There’s no animals or demon spirits killing and raping black women, it is black men qha” The tweet received over 1,200 retweets, 2,100 likes and 30 comments. </span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://twitter.com/thandostillau/status/1271055628409192449\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">@thandostillau</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> delved into how people deflected responsibility for gender-based violence: “Alcohol was banned, women were abused. Alcohol is sold again, women are still being abused. men are the problem, not alcohol”… “if you are a man and you still say ‘not all men’ then you are also part of the problem.” This tweet received 12,200 likes, 5,400 retweets and 69 comments. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The arrival of the South African National Defence Force and South African Police Service to ensure lockdown regulations were being adhered to at Tshegofatso Pule’s funeral on Thursday raised the ire of many social media users.</span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://twitter.com/illWayne/status/1270982863400378368\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">@illWayne</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tweeted: “They show up to enforce lockdown regulations at a funeral but they never show up to actually stop women from being killed in the first place”, the tweet received 1 100 retweets and 1 700 likes. Her tweet was a response to </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/tbotouch67/status/1270968241561702400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">@tbotouch67</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tweet about the SANDF and SAPS presence at the Tshegofatso’s funeral “The #SANDF and @SAPoliceService arrive at #TshegofatsoPule Funeral to enforce #level3lockdown regulations of 50 people at a funeral. #SABCNews”, which received 1,900 retweets, 2,000 likes and 905 comments. </span>\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-647108\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/11-June_Top-hashtags-Word-Cloud.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1432\" height=\"760\" />\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://twitter.com/SiboSeale/status/1270809644915703808\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">@SiboSeale</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> compared Police Minister Bheki Cele’s responses over gender-based violence to his strong stance over upholding the tobacco ban: “I'm not seeing Bheki Cele huffing and puffing over what happened to Tshego and Naledi the same way he was marching to arrest people smoking during lockdown.” The tweet received over 4,400 retweets, 9,300 likes and 176 comments. All tweets are direct quotes.” This tweet has been retweeted over 49,000 times and has received more than 100,000 likes. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">@VarnamKelly </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/VarnamKelly/status/1271051457790345217\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">responded</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: “People who have never been slaves, blaming people who have never owned a slave, for slavery.” This comment was retweeted 95 times and received 569 likes. @ar406061 added: “And you know who else took statues down? ISIS, Taliban, al-Qaeda. Next step is burning books . Wait for it”. This response was retweeted close to 100 times. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">@Samjohnston </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/SamJohnston724/status/1271080119952646149\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">suggested</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: “Nobody’s holding anyone responsible for the mistakes and horrors of the past - it’d be absurd to suggest so. All people are asking is that acknowledge those dark chapters that we are not proud of in order to heal and move forward.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Online shopping company Superbalist came under the spotlight after refusing to take a stance on the Black Lives Matter movement, saying it was not related to their business. The company has since issued a formal apology for its initial position, but customers continued to express their anger. @LD_P </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/LD_P/status/1270990389688692740\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tweeted: </span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Hi @superbalist! How can I delete my account? I'd like to close my account and be removed from all your databases. I don't support businesses that don’t support the same black people they use for aesthetics.” This post was retweeted 1,000 times and has received close to 3,000 likes. </span>\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-647106\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/11-June-Top-Emojis_Hashtags_phrases-by-identifiable-gender.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1432\" height=\"760\" />\r\n\r\n<b>Youngsters gone missing</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stories about two young people who went missing recently trended as the second biggest topics by burst on Thursday.</span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://twitter.com/AdvoBarryRoux\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">@AdvBarryRoux</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/AdvoBarryRoux/status/1271150492148740096\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tweeted</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an image of Luyanda Xolo with details of his disappearance.
