"contents": "<b>Graveyard picnic</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conversations about race yesterday invoked a poignant quote from Nadine Gordimer’s 1953 novel </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lying Days</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/NadiaDavids9/status/1275722373916917760\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tweeted </span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by @NadiaDavids9. A white character in the novel describes living with racial inequality in South Africa: it’s “like having a picnic in a beautiful graveyard where the people are buried alive under your feet”.</span>\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-655052\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/Gordimer-Quote.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"587\" height=\"178\" />\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The tweet was retweeted over 200 times and liked over 350 times, on a day when political parties drove a large volume of discussion on two of the top 10 leading topics on Twitter: “people” and “black”, which had over 66,000 and 26,000 mentions respectively. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Helen Zille’s </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/helenzille/status/1274723673761513472\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tweet</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on 21 June that “... there are more racist laws today than there were under apartheid,” drove volume on Twitter yesterday following a news </span><a href=\"https://www.news24.com/news24/Analysis/helen-zille-says-there-are-more-racist-laws-today-than-under-apartheid-we-compared-them-20200623\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">article </span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> interrogating Zille’s claim. </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Citizen</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ran a </span><a href=\"https://citizen.co.za/news/south-africa/politics/2308101/da-reviewing-zilles-de-klerk-apartheid-tweets/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">story</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> yesterday saying DA leader John Steenhuisen opposed Zille’s views, but agreed that all racist laws are wrong.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">@QaanitahHunter said senior black DA members had lodged formal complaints, in a </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/QaanitahHunter/status/1275770197077635072\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tweet</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that received almost 400 likes and over 230 likes. Black DA members drew some criticism from @NhlenhleKhumalo, who </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/NhlenhleKhumalo/status/1275712941413871618\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tweeted, </span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“At what point did DA black members seriously believe that a political party founded and led by white liberals with their ‘polite racism’ actually cared about the wellbeing of black people? How naive are you to not see that your blackness is being used as political clickbait?”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Criticism of Helen Zille’s tweet also came from Phumzile Van Damme: “You tweet outrageous things & then back pedal”. The </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/zilevandamme/status/1275708686846001152\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tweet</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> received over 800 retweets and 1,700 likes. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">@mbalimcdust </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/mbalimcdust/status/1275442709478518785\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tweeted</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: “Helen should be thanked for her service and retire now, no?” This tweet received over 2,200 likes, 436 comments and was retweeted over 780 times. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">@miss_andisa’s </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/miss_andisa/status/1275726159062368258\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tweet</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ed, “Helen Zille hasn’t lost her mind. She’s just racist. I don’t even know what people who engage her are trying to achieve.” This tweet was one of the top 10 tweets by reach, with a total reach of over 181,000, was retweeted almost 600 times and was liked over 1,500 times. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other political leaders also voiced their dissent. The EFF’s @MbuyiseniNdlozi tweeted: “There is more racism in Helen Zille’s head than there were racist laws under apartheid.” His tweet was retweeted 756 times and received over 4,100 likes.</span>\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-655058\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/Top-Hashtags_24-June-2020.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1256\" height=\"760\" />\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n<b>Whose problem?</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following the supplementary budget speech by Finance Minister Tito Mboweni, the ANC was criticised for the country’s problems. @Fin24 shared a quote by the minister: “Never before has government worked together so closely with the private sector, labour, community and the central bank.” The tweet received just five retweets and nine likes. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Responses to the speech from public figures like Herman Mashaba drove significant volume on twitter. His </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/HermanMashaba/status/1275781735649816577\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tweet: “Mboweni says ‘debt is South Africa's biggest problem’. In reality, the ANC is South Africa's biggest problem! The ANC looted South Africa into a hole long before Covid-19 came along! #SupplementaryBudget.” This was retweeted 799 times and was liked almost 3,000 times. Then Mashaba followed with a </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/HermanMashaba/status/1275797297352314886\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">second</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tweet: “SA has one of the largest cabinets in the world. There has been a growth in govt employees from 170,000 to 1.3 million in the past 10 years. You say debt is our biggest problem @tito_mboweni. I think you know the truth is that the ANC is South Africa’s biggest problem.” This tweet received over 1,300 likes and 440 retweets.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">@Richards_Karin tweeted, “Gvt scratching around borrowing R1-billion here and R1bn there, in order to fund the giant budget shortfall. And yet, they continue to throw away R1-billion every month on the cigarette ban. Why? Why would you persist in doing that? It is simply incomprehensible.” The tweet was retweeted 328 times and received almost 1,000 likes.</span>\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-655059\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/Top-People-and-Organisations_24-June-2020.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1256\" height=\"760\" />\r\n\r\n<b>EFF press conference</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> @EFFSouthAfrica </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/EFFSouthAfrica/status/1275823991542943745\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tweeted</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“CIC @Julius_S_Malema will be in conversation with 5 Journalists that will have the opportunity to ask him any question. The public engagement will therefore take place under the following details: Date: 25 June 2020. Time: 12h00 (GMT+2). Venue: EFF HQ. #CICSPEAKS.” The tweet received 503 retweets and 1,200 likes. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many social media welcomed this move as a show of transparency. Twitter user @uNtandoSindane </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/uNtandoSindane/status/1275779064045993985\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tweeted</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, “Tomorrow, Julius Malema is voluntarily subjecting himself to public scrutiny & interrogation over the VBS saga. 5 journalists, incl Pauli van Wyk, will be given carte blanche to interrogate him. We have never seen anything like this before in SA. Tis called ACCOUNTABILITY!” The tweet gained traction with 635 retweets and 1,900 likes. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Others criticised the event, highlighting the “ban” on some journalists and media outlets from EFF public engagement platforms. @EFF shared a screenshot of a tweet by journalist @PaulivW: “</span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amaBhungane</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are still banned from EFF press conferences. I will consider attending open and equitable press conferences when we are officially and publicly unbanned.” The screenshot was accompanied by the </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/EFFexplained/status/1275802983641624576\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">message</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: “Julius Malema publicly invites this propagandist liar Pauli Van Wyk for a face to face to discuss the rubbish she says about Malema and EFF having stolen VBS money and corrupt tenders and this is her excuse. Mind you she goes around saying Malema looted VBS bank.” This received 46 retweets and 121 likes. </span>\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-655057\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/Pauli-Van-Wyk-screenshot.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"828\" height=\"725\" />\r\n\r\n<b>Black Women Matter</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At 21:22 last night, @wavyemma </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/wavyemma/status/1275871954717704193\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tweeted</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> “ALL black women matter. including trans black women.” The tweet received more than 1,400 retweets and 3,600 likes by this morning. Commenting with a </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/Quote_me_on_it/status/1275946022934589448\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">screenshot of their timeline</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, @Quote_me_on_it tweeted, “Look at my timeline. I LOVE IT!!!!” A few comments on the tweet linked to various Go Fund Me accounts for people to donate money to specific causes, like Leandra Ericah, who appealed for donations for a black trans woman who needs medical help for gender transition. The validity of these Go Fund Me accounts has not been established.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">@AfricaFactsZone </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/AfricaFactsZone/status/1275885814623461378\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tweeted the image</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of a woman holding a metallic nugget. The tweet claims the woman pretended to be a man to get a job on a mine during a time when women were not allowed to be employed as mine workers. She has built homes for her parents and owns her own mining company with 70 employees. Miners apparently didn’t know that she was a woman, until she was accused of rape. The tweet has already been retweeted more than 2,000 times and has received close to 5,000 likes.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A BBC news article on the woman, found in the comments of the Africa Facts Zone Post, </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/jomadoye/status/1275978169145856000\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reads, </span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“I acted as a man to get work – until I was accused of rape.” Many of the comments empathised with the struggles women face, for example, @hdswishin’s </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/hdswishin/status/1275887872902664197\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tweet</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: “I think this is proof of the unfair advantage men have in some parts of the world...”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, the list of Miss SA 2020 Top 15 semi-finalists announced on Wednesday trended yesterday. @Official_MissSA shared a 16-part </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/Official_MissSA/status/1275836948054237184\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twitter thread</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which read: “INTRODUCING MISS SOUTH AFRICA 2020 – TOP 15 FINALISTS in alphabetical order.” The tweet received 1,300 retweets and 3,400 likes. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many Twitter users, including the semi-finalists, shared their excitement on social media. @abigailmusida </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/abigailmusida/status/1275860220770738178\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tweeted</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a photograph of herself, along with the message, “Happy to announce that I’m one of the top 15 semi-finalists for @official_misssa 2020. Thank you so much for the wonderful support and love that I have been receiving from each one of you. it’s time to vote, so let’s go get em’ #misssa2020 #faceyourpower #embraceyourfuture.” The tweet gained traction with 2,100 retweets and 12,600 likes. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another semi-finalist, @SitholeMatsepo, shared her photograph in a </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/SitholeMatsepo/status/1275852992001040387\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tweet</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: “Hey guys, I am ecstatic to announce that I am part of the Miss SA 2020 TOP 15? Thank you so much for the support. ??♥️ #MissSA2020 #faceyourpower #MatsepoforMissSA #embraceyourfuture. Photographer: (@yuvikphoto). Image edited by: (@willembotha). Hair & make-up: (@fancy.friction)”.
