Pathetic politicians and their egos!” The tweet received over 400 likes.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Memes for ministers</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A satirical trend emerged on Twitter this week as users posted memes taking jibes at the performance of some Cabinet ministers. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The trend emerged after this </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/_Buhlez/status/1326465642472632321\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">post</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by @_Buhlez of basic education minister Angie Motshekga alongside an image of children standing in line outside a rudimentary school building. The post was retweeted more than 3,000 times and received close to 5,000 likes. </span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/19-november_the-minister-the-school_angie-motshekga/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-770014 aligncenter\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/19-NOvember_The-Minister-The-School_Angie-Motshekga.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"592\" height=\"524\" /></a>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">@Keydeekgomokabo followed with a photo of human settlements minister Lindiwe Sisulu dancing in the street, next to an image of congested shacks in an informal settlement. This comment was retweeted more than 500 times and received over 900 likes. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Former DA leader Mmusi Maimane </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/MmusiMaimane/status/1326564866266718212\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">got</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> behind the trend and tweeted a photo of Motshekga alongside a screenshot of a </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> article: “R22m spent on school – and there is only the foundation to show for it.” His post was retweeted more than 1,000 times. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Transport minister Fikile Mbalula was next in line for a lashing. @mpumz_n </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/mpumz_n/status/1326472948992106496\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tweeted</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> “The Minister. The road...” – images of Mbalula popping expensive Veuve Clicquot champagne next to an image of what is </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/EsethuOnDuty/status/1326475037424148480\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allegedly</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> “Lucas Mangope Road in the North West”. The Twittersphere received the image well, retweeting it more than 1,600 times and liking it close to 4,000 times. </span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/19-november_the-minister-the-road_fikile-mbalula/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-770011 aligncenter\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/19-NOvember_The-Minister-The-Road_Fikile-Mbalula.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"588\" height=\"558\" /></a>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Police minister Bheki Cele was </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/bozzie_t/status/1326559265981652992\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shown</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> alongside a photo of a civilian sitting on top of a police van drinking a quart of beer. </span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/19-november_police-minsiter-police_bheki-cele/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-770010 aligncenter\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/19-November_Police-Minsiter-Police_Bheki-Cele.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"595\" height=\"436\" /></a>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Public works and infrastructure minister, Patricia De Lille, </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/dumigwebu/status/1326605655235506177\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">appeared</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> next to an image of a gaping hole in the border fence. </span>\r\n\r\n<b>Bashtags still trending</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two hashtags being used to bash foreign nationals – #PutSouthAfricaFirst and #PutSouthAfricansFirst – trended on Twitter again this week, with 7,269 and 3,719 mentions, respectively.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This week’s xenophobic rhetoric was aimed at supporting the movements’ unfounded claims, including South Africa’s unemployment statistics, foreign policy on immigration, the number of foreign nationals said to be living illegally in South Africa and churches led by foreign nationals.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soon after news outlet @ewnreporter </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/ewnreporter/status/1326824149239672832\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shared</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> screenshots putting South Africa’s unemployment rate at 30.8%, the #PutSouthAfricaFirst movement began making unfounded accusations aimed at foreign nationals. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">@RealLwaziMsomi </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/RealLwaziMsomi/status/1326842431980138496\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tweeted</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“SA has to be the only country in the world where you'd have multiple university accolades and still be unemployed while overtaken by a foreign national with no documentation and who didn't even finish Grade 10. SA is a sketch comedy shame. #unemployment #PutSouthAfricaFirst.” This post generated 147 retweets and nearly 1,000 likes.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">@Maps_pj </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/Maps_pj/status/1326879626728271874\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">suggested</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> South African citizens “storm workplaces dismissing foreigners” because “we are the beneficiaries of the Struggle for Freedom, not foreigners.” This was echoed by @NokuthulaMolef8 who shared concerns about being unemployed, </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/NokuthulaMolef8/status/1325400509314895873\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">indicating</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that South Africa needed “a President like Trump”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">@Kgomo389 </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/Kgomo389/status/1326843239685566465\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tweeted</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“EFF needs to relook at their border stance. When people demanded land, ANC changed and sang a new tune. EFF it is not late to change your foreign policy and start to #PutSouthAfricaFirst. 11 million South Africans are unemployed.” This was retweeted 121 times and liked nearly 700 times.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prominent #PutSouthAfricaFirst supporter @MarioKhumalo </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/MarioKhumalo/status/1326920036120981504\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">applauded</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the FF+ for standing “for culture and identify, no white man from anywhere or Europe will ever call them xenophobic. I'm no different from the FF+, but somehow, I'm xenophobic for standing for culture and identity. I will not stop!” This tweet generated 70 retweets and 365 likes.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An unfounded rumour claiming that 15 million immigrants are living illegally in South Africa is gaining traction, despite the absence of proof. @Maps_pj </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/Maps_pj/status/1326916664408092672\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tweeted</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: “</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have over 15 million illegal foreigners? Home Affairs doesn't know who they are and what they're here for. Public Works knows that they enter via the open borders. Labour Dept. doesn't know how many are illegally working in our labour market. #PutSouthAfricaFirst.” This tweet generated nearly 150 retweets and 329 likes.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next day former Johannesburg mayor @HermanMashaba included this claim in a </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/hermanmashaba/status/1327123063343865856\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tweet</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“1. 15m undocumented foreigners in South Africa, some occupying jobs that can be done by our own people 2. Billions of dollars of counterfeit goods by undocumented foreigners into SA. 3. They have destroyed SMMEs in Black communities. It is against our laws to be illegal.” This post generated 614 retweets and over 1,200 likes. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many posts that denounced Mashaba’s unsubstantiated claim did not gain traction. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">@BlackCulture_HM </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/BlackCulture_HM/status/1327258308990939137\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shared</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“The leadership of the gangsters of #PutSouthAfricaFirst Herman Mashaba is misleading citizens, where do you get this madness numbers, all researchers are saying it's 3 million”. This tweet received only five retweets and 42 likes.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">@Shokwakhe16 </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/Shokwakhe16/status/1327942302262845441\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shared</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a photograph of people dressed in white gathered in an open field: “Bese kuzoba these Zimbabwean churches that are mushrooming everywhere.
