A person’s social identity, or how they see themselves in relation to others, can be reinforced through sport. This can happen, for instance, when someone </span><a href=\"https://doi.org/10.1111/bjso.12349\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">views themselves as a member of a team and celebrates their success</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or views a rival team or country in a negative light after a loss.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, the outcome of a game can </span><a href=\"https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-022-26187-x\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">boost in-group favouritism</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which can influence </span><a href=\"https://doi.org/10.1093/oep/gpy054\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">whether consumers buy goods from a specific vendor</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Nationalism versus patriotism</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generally, research suggests sports </span><a href=\"https://doi.org/10.1177/0010414021997498\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reinforce a national in-group identity that is more patriotic than nationalistic</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, the vitriol Canadians have expressed during the US national anthem leans towards expressing nationalist views rather than patriotic ones.</span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780197541302.013.20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patriotism typically focuses</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on why a country is great without necessarily disparaging outsiders or other countries. If he decides to flex the US’s capacity to be a bully in US-Canadian relations, Canada is stuck with limited options.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But are Canadians playing right into Trump’s hands by leaning into an adversarial relationship?</span>\r\n<h4><b>How Trump uses sport for political gain</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trump has a history of using major sporting events to his political benefit. During his most recent presidential campaign, he </span><a href=\"https://apnews.com/article/trump-army-navy-football-penny-hegseth-desantis-85da138b3ac130b211afc414bf43514a\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">attended the Army-Navy football game</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and recently he became the </span><a href=\"https://apnews.com/article/trump-nfl-super-bowl-first-president-766c628f4ea3faf38d100e4f33f2ac8c\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first sitting president to attend the Super Bowl</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in New Orleans.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trump also considered attending the 4 Nations final between the US and Canada in Boston, but couldn’t because of a scheduled speech with US governors. Still, he made his presence felt by </span><a href=\"https://apnews.com/article/trump-us-canada-hockey-four-nations-f2d19c33861b4f87f007b7f3f414f910\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">calling the American team</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> beforehand to wish them luck.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looking ahead, Trump may continue to use international sporting events to assert his vision for US relations with Canada and Mexico. In January, he </span><a href=\"https://inside.fifa.com/organisation/president/news/donald-trump-rally-gianni-infantino-world-cup-2026-mentioned\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">invited Gianni Infantino</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the head of world soccer governing body Fifa, to his inauguration, just as preparations have begun for the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted by Canada, Mexico and the US.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With </span><a href=\"https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6085431/2025/01/24/trump-infantino-fifa-world-cup/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Infantino and Trump becoming increasingly friendly</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it seems likely Trump will use the upcoming World Cup to influence North American relations. At the very least, he will likely try to insert himself into its coverage.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2623269\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/2198595390-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"US-Canada sport Trump\" width=\"1825\" height=\"2560\" /> <em>US President Donald Trump. (Photo: Getty Images)</em></p>\r\n<h4><b>Using sport to reinforce his image</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond politics, Trump uses sports to play into his crafted image as a hypermasculine man. This image has </span><a href=\"https://apnews.com/article/trump-young-men-voters-election-latinos-democrats-ff30e38698a41132cf90345fffabe579\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">played a large part in his popularity among young men</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and helped him win a second term as president.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet Trump does not necessarily fit the masculine norms his supporters lionise. He is fairly tall, which has been </span><a href=\"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.leaqua.2012.09.002\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shown to be preferred among American voters</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, unlike past presidents such as Dwight D Eisenhower and Richard Nixon, who played college football, </span><a href=\"https://apnews.com/article/trump-nfl-super-bowl-first-president-766c628f4ea3faf38d100e4f33f2ac8c\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trump’s athletic background</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is limited to high school football.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nor did Trump serve in the military like previous presidents John F Kennedy and Ronald Reagan, both of whom served in World War 2. Trump, by contrast, </span><a href=\"https://www.politifact.com/article/2015/jul/21/was-trump-draft-dodger/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">avoided service during the Vietnam War</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for medical and educational reasons.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite a lack of traditional masculine bonafides, Trump has shown an ability to use sporting events for his political gain. He has used sporting events as potent media environments to insert his talking points and burnish his masculine image.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the end, the boos from Canadian fans may be music to Trump’s ears. He wants to be hated by outsiders so he can turn around to his supporters and say that the US is under attack at its borders. He wants the sporting accomplishments of the American men’s teams to reflect on his strength.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can still go against him, as we saw on 20 February with Canada beating the US in overtime. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wasted no time using the moment to respond with strong rhetoric in a tweet.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What happened on the ice was out of Trump’s control. But he used the event to serve his own goals, sowing greater divisiveness across borders. The shadow of his combative rhetoric loomed large over the entire event. </span><b>DM</b>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First published by </span></i><a href=\"https://theconversation.com/more-than-just-a-game-how-sports-are-reflecting-canada-u-s-tensions-250385\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Conversation</span></i></a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span></i>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Noah Eliot Vanderhoeven is a PhD candidate in political science at Western University in Ontario, Canada.</span></i>\r\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>This story first appeared in our weekly </i>Daily Maverick 168<i> newspaper, which is available countrywide for R35.</i></span></p>\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2622749\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/DM-07032025-001-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1947\" height=\"2560\" />\r\n\r\n<iframe style=\"border: none !important;\" src=\"https://counter.theconversation.com/content/250385/count.gif?distributor=republish-lightbox-advanced\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\"></iframe>",

Sport has </span><a href=\"https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1354-5078.1997.00113.x\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">powerful symbolism that can be exploited to great effect</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in forming a coherent national identity.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this way, sporting events are a way that fandoms can </span><a href=\"https://www.taylorfrancis.com/chapters/edit/10.4324/9781032680163-5/banal-europeanism-europeanisation-football-enhabitation-europeanised-football-fandom-regina-weber\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reinforce national identity as an objective symbol</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that connects to primitive forms of national ideology.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sport is also a powerful psychological setting for national rhetoric. Nationalism, on the other hand, </span><a href=\"https://doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780197541302.013.20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tends to play up</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> why one’s country is great while vilifying another country or group.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trump’s focus on using tariffs to bully Canada into increasing security at the border has undoubtedly soured relations between the two countries. At the very least, he will likely try to insert himself into its coverage.</span>\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_2623269\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"1825\"]<img class=\"size-full wp-image-2623269\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/2198595390-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"US-Canada sport Trump\" width=\"1825\" height=\"2560\" /> <em>US President Donald Trump. </span><b>DM</b>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First published by </span></i><a href=\"https://theconversation.com/more-than-just-a-game-how-sports-are-reflecting-canada-u-s-tensions-250385\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Conversation</span></i></a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span></i>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Noah Eliot Vanderhoeven is a PhD candidate in political science at Western University in Ontario, Canada.</span></i>\r\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>This story first appeared in our weekly </i>Daily Maverick 168<i> newspaper, which is available countrywide for R35.</i></span></p>\r\n<img class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2622749\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/DM-07032025-001-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1947\" height=\"2560\" />\r\n\r\n<iframe style=\"border: none !important;\" src=\"https://counter.theconversation.com/content/250385/count.gif?distributor=republish-lightbox-advanced\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\"></iframe>",
