"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stephen Grootes’ harmful cynicism in his article published by </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Thursday (</span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“</span></i><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-01-25-das-march-on-ancs-luthuli-house-was-the-starting-gun-for-its-2024-election-campaign/?utm_source=top_reads_block&utm_campaign=maverick_news\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DA’s march on ANC’s Luthuli House was the starting gun for its 2024 election campaign</span></i></a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">”</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) cannot go unchallenged. By peddling the false narrative that SA voters have no alternatives to the ANC, Grootes does profound harm to South Africa.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He concludes: “It is clear that politicians are very comfortable arguing about who is to blame. But they do not appear to be focusing on finding solutions (to the energy crisis). Which may mean that no matter who wins next year’s elections, very few of our politicians will provide solutions to solve our problems.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is crystal clear is that Grootes has made no effort to find out about the solutions offered by opposition parties to South Africa’s energy crisis. In the DA’s case, these were most recently set out in my </span><a href=\"https://www.da.org.za/2023/01/the-das-response-to-the-energy-crisis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">latest newsletter</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> titled “The DA’s response to the energy crisis”, which was also </span><a href=\"https://www.news24.com/news24/opinions/columnists/guestcolumn/john-steenhuisen-the-anc-must-understand-the-risk-it-faces-if-it-doesnt-act-on-eskom-crisis-20230121\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">News24</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> under the title “The ANC must understand the risk it faces if it doesn’t act on Eskom crisis”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The </span><a href=\"about:blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DA’s Energy Policy</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, our comprehensive plan to fix South Africa’s energy crisis, is available to all within a few clicks. It was developed by the DA’s head of policy, Gwen Ngwenya, and her team in consultation with several energy experts.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have also set out our solutions in countless media statements, most recently </span><a href=\"https://www.da.org.za/2023/01/fire-mantashe-if-you-are-serious-about-suspending-tariff-hikes-mr-president\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, </span><a href=\"https://www.da.org.za/2023/01/for-as-long-as-the-anc-is-in-power-you-will-have-less-and-less-power\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, </span><a href=\"https://www.da.org.za/2023/01/mantashe-reveals-incompetence-to-address-electricity-crisis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and </span><a href=\"https://www.da.org.za/2023/01/electricity-crisis-does-not-need-new-legislation-declare-a-ring-fenced-state-of-disaster-now\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Information on solutions offered by other opposition parties is neatly summarised </span><a href=\"https://dailyfriend.co.za/2023/01/26/comparing-the-electricity-policies-of-sas-top-five-opposition-parties/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, making it easy for even the most disinterested commentators to get their facts straight.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, actions speak louder than words. The DA has not just talked. We’ve taken several bold actions to help solve SA’s energy crisis.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most recently, on Monday and Tuesday this week we were in court to rip out the problem at its roots by having </span><a href=\"https://www.da.org.za/2023/01/da-takes-on-anc-in-court-on-23-and-24-january-to-abolish-cadre-deployment-corruption\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the ANC’s policy of cadre deployment declared illegal</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Because of the cadre deployment committee records that the DA exposed to the country last year, we know it is at Luthuli House where, over the past 25 years, the decisions were made to “deploy” the corrupt and incompetent ANC cadres who destroyed Eskom.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also this week, DA-run Cape Town became </span><a href=\"https://www.businesslive.co.za/bd/opinion/editorials/2023-01-25-editorial-cape-town-shows-the-way-on-energy-others-should-follow/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the first city</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to successfully negotiate a feed-in tariff with the Treasury, which will allow the city to soon pay businesses and residents for supplying their excess electricity to the local grid. This is just the latest of several measures taken to shield residents from ANC load shedding.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Wednesday, the DA led a huge, peaceful and successful </span><a href=\"https://www.da.org.za/2023/01/only-your-vote-can-reclaim-your-power-from-the-crooks-in-luthuli-house\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Power to the People march</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to Luthuli House, ANC headquarters. The reasons for doing so were important. Voters need to understand that ANC corruption and incompetence, not Eskom or Nersa, are to blame for load shedding and high electricity prices. The ANC needs to understand that if it continues on its obstructionist path, it will lose power.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last week, the DA </span><a href=\"https://www.da.org.za/2023/01/da-files-court-papers-to-interdict-nersa-tariff-increase\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">filed court papers</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to interdict the Nersa tariff increase, on the basis that taxpayers should not be forced to pay for ANC corruption and incompetence. As part of the </span><a href=\"https://www.da.org.za/2023/01/da-to-ask-high-court-for-interdict-against-eskom-tariff-hike\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">application</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we also asked that the court direct the government to file, within 30 days, a comprehensive plan, including short-term, medium-term and long-term steps, to avert the energy crisis.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Monday next week, the DA will be in court again. This is for our other case against cadre deployment, which is a PAIA (Promotion of Access to Information Act) application to obtain all cadre deployment minutes from the time President Cyril Ramaphosa was chair of the ANC’s national deployment committee. The ANC says cadre deployment is freedom of speech, yet Ramaphosa is intent on hiding his minutes.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, the energy crisis is just the most visible of the multiple crises hitting South Africa, all with the same root causes. The DA’s offer to South Africans in the make-or-break general election of 2024 will be to not just do things better but to do things differently.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are offering fundamental rather than superficial reform, in line with our four core governing principles, which are a commitment to the rule of law, a market-driven economy, a capable state that delivers to all, and nonracialism. The DA is particularly popular among white and middle-class voters.</p>\r\n<p data-sourcepos=\"7:1-7:387\">Other opposition parties include the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), the Freedom Front Plus (FF+), and the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP).
