Others, like Stellenbosch University, have turned to online resources like Zoom, the video conferencing app, to ensure that students get the recognition that they deserve.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The newly installed chancellor of Stellenbosch University, the retired Constitutional Court judge Edwin Cameron, who was </span><a href=\"https://www.sun.ac.za/english/Lists/news/DispForm.aspx?ID=6772\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">elected</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in September 2019, conferred over 3,000 qualifications, which include certificates, diplomas and degrees, during an </span><a href=\"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6fA_oGXgeQ&feature=youtu.be\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">online</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> graduation ceremony.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the recording, Cameron describes conferring the qualifications as an “honour” as it was his first public role as chancellor. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a seven-minute virtual ceremony, Cameron congratulated students and their families for their hard work.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zoe Human is one such student. She completed her honours in journalism at Stellenbosch University. She was supposed to have her graduation ceremony on Tuesday 31 March. On Friday 3 April the department of journalism held an award ceremony over Zoom. </span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-597521\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/Karabo-grad-virtual-final-inset-1-zoe.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1033\" height=\"766\" /> Zoe Human had her graduation ceremony over Zoom. It was a bittersweet moment for me knowing that I wouldn’t have the actual graduation ceremony, but I really appreciate the effort,” Human told </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The University of the Western Cape also held its graduation ceremony virtually. A </span><a href=\"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-AVoBhw00s&feature=youtu.be\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">link </span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was sent out and a prerecorded video with the chancellor, Archbishop Thabo Makgoba, congratulating the graduates. Then a list of the graduate’s names appeared on the screen.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The University of Pretoria has also decided to have an online ceremony for graduates. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, once it is safe to proceed, the university will invite these graduates to graduation ceremonies over which the chancellor, vice-chancellor and principal or a deputy vice-principal will preside. This means we will have both an online and traditional graduation ceremony for our graduates,” reads a </span><a href=\"https://www.up.ac.za/up-graduations\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">statement </span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from the vice-chancellor, Tawana Kupe. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), which usually has its graduation ceremonies in April, is also looking for innovative ways to have graduations and other events.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“We are exploring avenues like virtual reality and social media feeds to make the graduation ceremony a worthy experience for our students and as memorable as possible,” said Lauren Kansley, CPUT’s spokesperson.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While some universities looked online for alternatives, students at the University of Cape Town and the University of Witwatersrand graduated in absentia after ceremonies were suspended. The University of Cape Town sent graduates their degrees and transcripts electronically since it has closed its administration buildings.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bonolo Malebo completed her postgraduate diploma in accounting at UCT and was supposed to graduate on Saturday 28 March. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“I’m gutted that I wasn’t able to graduate, but I’m also aware that graduation means different people would be flying in from different countries and it would be a huge gathering.
