(Photo: EPA-EFE/Patrick B Kraemer)</p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 24-year-old’s victory marked the second African gold medal in the pool following Tunisian Ahmed Hafnaoui’s success in the men’s 400m freestyle on Sunday. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schoenmaker went in front on the third lap and then delivered a powerful final length at the Tokyo Aquatic Centre to smash the world record and grab gold.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“It still hasn’t really sunk in! I’m excited to also go back home and celebrate this with my family. I don’t wish my Olympic dream was over, but I am really excited to just go and celebrate, even being at the Olympics, with my parents,” said Schoenmaker after the race.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She had come to Tokyo as the No 1-ranked swimmer in the event and the gold medal favourite.
