"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many South Africans have heard of </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2024-10-14-its-time-to-abnormalise-hunger-in-south-africa/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Food Day</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (16 October), but probably way fewer have heard of </span><a href=\"https://www.worldhungerday.org/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Hunger Day</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (28 May). In 2011, </span><a href=\"https://thp.org/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Hunger Project</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> launched World Hunger Day to call attention to the global food crisis. The vision for </span><a href=\"https://convoyofhope.org/articles/world-hunger-day/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Hunger Day 2030</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a world where no person lacks access to adequate nutritious food.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Importantly, World Hunger Day does not see donating meals to hungry people as a sustainable solution. Instead, the solution lies in empowering hungry people, and addressing the underlying social and economic inequities that cause hunger. Ending hunger requires </span><a href=\"https://www.awarenessdays.com/awareness-days-calendar/world-hunger-day-2025/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">systemic change</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. </span><a href=\"https://www.worldhungerday.org/about-us/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By empowering communities facing hunger, we can transform the systems of inequity that keep hunger in place</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We argue that World Hunger Day is more appropriate than World Food Day for South Africa to commemorate. Lack of food is not a problem in our country; hunger is the problem. This apparent paradox is easy to explain. </span><a href=\"https://sagrainmag.co.za/2024/10/02/sa-produces-enough-food-still-people-are-starving/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is more than enough food in South Africa</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but millions of South Africans do not have access to sufficient food, because of poverty, unemployment, food waste, and inadequate government interventions such as social grants.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are 10 reasons why South Africans should take World Hunger Day seriously.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Ten unacceptable facts about hunger in South Africa</b></h4>\r\n<ol>\r\n \t<li>A total of <a href=\"https://dgmt.co.za/south-africas-children-are-dying-of-hunger/\">1,000 children</a> die from severe acute malnutrition every year. Malnutrition is the underlying cause of a further <a href=\"https://dgmt.co.za/south-africas-children-are-dying-of-hunger/\">10,000 child deaths</a> every year, accounting for one-third of all child deaths in South Africa.</li>\r\n \t<li>More than <a href=\"https://ci.uct.ac.za/sites/default/files/media/documents/ci_uct_ac_za/533/early-childhood-review-2024-v11-singles-26-july.pdf\">1.5 million</a> children under five (29%) are stunted, or too short for their age. This has increased from 27% in 2016. The global target is to <a href=\"https://ci.uct.ac.za/sites/default/files/media/documents/ci_uct_ac_za/533/early-childhood-review-2024-v11-singles-26-july.pdf\">halve</a> stunting by 2030.</li>\r\n \t<li>Only one in five infants (22%) under six months old are exclusively <a href=\"https://www.unicef.org/southafrica/media/10731/file/ZAF-UNICEF-situation-analysis-children-adolescents-SA-2024-summary.pdf\">breastfed</a>. The global target is <a href=\"https://www.who.int/teams/nutrition-and-food-safety/global-targets-2025\">50% by 2025</a>.</li>\r\n \t<li>A total of <a href=\"https://www.statssa.gov.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/Mbalo-brief-November.pdf\">10 million tons</a> of food goes to waste every year, equivalent to one-third of <a href=\"https://www.statssa.gov.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/Mbalo-brief-November.pdf\">31 million tons</a> This wasted food could generate <a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2024-03-21-sa-faces-a-catastrophic-hunger-crisis-while-10m-tonnes-of-foodstuff-goes-to-waste-every-year/?refresh=cache\">30 billion meals</a>, enough to feed all hungry people in South Africa for more than a year.</li>\r\n \t<li>The Child Support Grant, at R560/month, is <a href=\"https://pmbejd.org.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/PMBEJD_Key-Data_April-2025_30042025.pdf\">30% below the food poverty line</a>, and 42% less than the cost of a nutritious diet for a child.</li>\r\n \t<li>Farm workers suffer severe seasonal hunger, rising from less than 50% in summer (farming season) to over <a href=\"https://www.mdpi.com/2072-6643/11/7/1535\">85% in winter</a> (when they have no work).</li>\r\n \t<li>A worker earning the national minimum wage (R28.79/hour), after electricity and transport costs, can buy <a href=\"https://pmbejd.org.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/PMBEJD_Key-Data_April-2025_30042025.pdf\">less than half</a> (41%) of a nutritious diet for a family of four.</li>\r\n \t<li>A total of <a href=\"https://pmbejd.org.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/April-2025-Household-Affordability-Index-PMBEJD_30042025.pdf\">14 million</a> South Africans, or 25% of the population, survive below the food poverty line, which is set at <a href=\"https://www.statssa.gov.za/publications/P03101/P031012024.pdf\">R796</a> per person per month.</li>\r\n \t<li>One in five households (21%) have <a href=\"https://www.statssa.gov.za/publications/03-00-20/03-00-202021.pdf\">inadequate access to food</a>. Female-headed households are more affected (24%) than male-headed households (18%).</li>\r\n \t<li><a href=\"https://www.statssa.gov.za/publications/03-00-20/03-00-202021.pdf\">Twenty-four percent of black</a> and 19% of coloured South Africans, but only 3% of Indians and whites, have inadequate access to food.</li>\r\n</ol>\r\n<h4><b>The Union Against Hunger</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The </span><a href=\"https://unionagainsthunger.org/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Union Against Hunger</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (UAH), a social justice movement with founding members that include civil society organisations like the </span><a href=\"https://heala.org/world-hunger-day-a-chance-for-south-africa-to-vote-for-food-justice/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Healthy Living Alliance</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Heala) coalition, </span><a href=\"https://www.growgreat.co.za/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grow Great</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the </span><a href=\"https://www.nelsonmandelachildrensfund.com/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, see World Hunger Day as an opportunity to spotlight food injustice and advocate for upholding the </span><a href=\"https://www.justice.gov.za/constitution/SAConstitution-web-eng.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">constitutional right to food</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. On World Hunger Day 2025, the Union Against Hunger and partners are organising public meetings in three cities: Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The UAH has also launched a petition (sign it </span><a href=\"https://awethu.amandla.mobi/petitions/shoprite-bring-your-food-prices-down\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) calling on Shoprite CEO Pieter Engelbrecht to bring food prices down urgently. Reducing food prices is one of </span><a href=\"https://unionagainsthunger.org/get-involved/#How-you-can-take-action\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10 demands</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the UAH is making. Others include: halve child stunting by 2030; raise the Child Support Grant to the food poverty line and introduce a Maternal Support Grant; extend early childhood development and school nutrition to all children; address seasonal hunger, especially of farm workers; and pass legislation to reduce food wastage.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A recent Daily Maverick article revealed that </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2025-05-20-malnutrition-tragedy-155-sa-children-have-died-this-year-alone/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">155 children have died of malnutrition in public health facilities since January</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, according to official statistics provided by the minister of health. An unknown number — probably much higher — have died of hunger outside hospitals and clinics. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is not “</span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2024-10-14-its-time-to-abnormalise-hunger-in-south-africa/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">normal</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">”. It is unnecessary and unacceptable, as World Hunger Day reminds us.
