(Photo: Allison Dinner / AFP)</p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the same day of this </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-05-25-fourteen-students-and-a-teacher-killed-in-texas-school-shooting/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mass school shooting</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the second deadliest in US history, police in the Western Cape, which is known as South Africa’s gangsterism capital, were trying to stamp out gang shootings in suburbs that have become known for related violence.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Police in the province issued a statement saying a woman was arrested and a 9mm pistol with ammunition confiscated during “efforts to bring stability and combat gang-related shooting in the Manenberg area.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These gang battles have had a direct impact on generations of children.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Shootings affect school children in SA’s gang hotspots</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The day before police issued the statement about their operations in Manenberg, </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick’s </span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tamsin Metelerkamp</span> <a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-05-23-gunfire-outside-manenberg-schools-sends-children-scrambling-for-cover-not-for-the-first-time/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: “Several schools and an early childhood development centre in Manenberg on the Cape Flats were affected by gang violence last week. A shootout… saw learners in classrooms at Red River Primary School taking cover on the floor. Gang violence in the area is an ongoing problem and is traumatising teachers and learners alike.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The surge of gang violence in </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-06-18-cape-of-fear-nobody-dares-to-stand-by-a-window-when-gangs-are-involved-in-a-shoot-out/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manenberg</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is nothing new. Like other Western Cape gang hotspots, which under apartheid were dumping grounds for residents who were not white, shootings have rocked it for decades, shattering and ending many lives.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has become a terrible cycle — gang battles (for whatever reason, including competition over drug trade turf) develop, shootings increase, police and </span><a href=\"https://www.westerncape.gov.za/news/minister-allen-engages-manenberg-and-heideveld-residents-manenberg-shootings\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">politicians react</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the violence ebbs… and then picks up again.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While South Africa has not seen mass shootings inside schools like the US has, it struggles with ongoing gang violence and there have been crimes involving firearms causing several casualties.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, there has recently been </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-05-09-six-dead-in-latest-cape-mass-shooting-police-make-arrest-for-previous-killings/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a spate of mass shootings in Khayelitsha</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with one of the latest cases involving six men gunned down in a single incident earlier this month.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>A tale of two countries</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Texas school shooting, understandably, is making news headlines internationally.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is shocking and comparisons to other incidents cannot mitigate the tragedy.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1276540\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/OD-Caryn-Texas-SA-gangs2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"396\" /> Crosses bearing names of victims line an area on school ground following a mass shooting at the Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, USA, 26 May 2022. (Photo: EPA-EFE/Tannen Maury)</p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While global scrutiny is now on the US, violence unfolding in Manenberg and other gang flashpoints in South Africa, particularly in the Western Cape, is reported on locally, the headlines becoming repeats of what has been reported on for years already.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is not uncommon to see a headline referring to a child or children getting caught in gang crossfire.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The intent driving whoever pulled the triggers in all these cases — from the Texas massacre to Western Cape gang battles in which children are trapped and the Khayelitsha killings — is undoubtedly different.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the result is the same – mounting murder tolls.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the case of the Texas shooting, those targeted — children — are also those getting caught up in gang crossfire in the Western Cape.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, as the US deals with issues relating to firearm controls and school massacres, SA has its own crisis in this realm involving children, gang violence and illicit firearms.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Constantly mounting massacre </b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The wounding and murdering of SA’s children in gang hotspots effectively equate to a drawn-out, constantly developing massacre with no end in sight.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This tragedy is unquantifiable in terms of trauma.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Incidents in which children have been caught — or targeted — in such shootings include:</span>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>The <a href=\"https://www.news24.com/news24/southafrica/news/man-killed-woman-and-baby-injured-in-cape-town-shooting-20220421\">wounding last month of a one-year-old</a> during a shooting, which <i>News24</i> reported on, in the Cape Town suburb of Lansdowne.</li>\r\n \t<li>A stray bullet <a href=\"https://ewn.co.za/2021/12/29/uthmaan-taliep-toddler-killed-in-suspected-gang-shooting-laid-to-rest\">struck two-year-old Uthmaan Taliep</a> in the face in December last year in the Cape Town suburb of Belhar, killing the toddler.</li>\r\n \t<li>In November 2019 <i>Daily Maverick</i> reported on Fiona Steleki, a mother from the Cape Town suburb of Nyanga, <a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2019-11-28-they-shot-my-son-in-the-head-four-times-while-he-was-lying-on-the-ground/\">whose son Shaun Zuko Steleki, 16, was murdered</a> back in October 2014. “My son was gunned down by a known gangster,” she had said. “They had threatened him for a long time, they wanted him to join the gangs… Shaun went to school in Gugulethu and some of his classmates were from an opposing gang. Shaun faced one gang where he lived and another where he went to school.”</li>\r\n \t<li>In August 2019 <a href=\"https://www.news24.com/news24/southafrica/news/heavily-pregnant-mom-shot-dead-in-cape-town-20190810\">a pregnant mother was murdered</a> when she was caught in gunfire in Manenberg.</li>\r\n \t<li>Six-month-old <a href=\"https://www.news24.com/News24/she-smiled-at-me-dad-recalls-the-moment-he-realised-baby-zahnia-had-been-shot-20181008\">Zahnia Woodward was murdered</a> in December 2016 when a stray bullet struck her in the head in the Cape Town suburb of Ocean View. Her father had been holding her at the time she was shot.</li>\r\n \t<li><i>Eyewitness News</i> reported that at the end of May 2016 <a href=\"https://ewn.co.za/2016/06/01/Grandmother-grieves-death-of-her-4-year-old-grandson\">four-year-old Machiano Geswind</a> was killed when a stray bullet struck him while he was standing outside his house in the Cape Town suburb of Delft.</li>\r\n</ul>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many other cases of children becoming statistics — their names either adding to a mounting gang violence murder toll or the number of those wounded in shootings.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bullets have paralysed some children and have remained lodged in others.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A nasty factor contributing to all this is the funnelling of firearms to gangsters. </span>\r\n\r\n<b>261 children shot — SA’s cop corruption and guns crisis</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Claims of cop corruption have surfaced in this arena.</span>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has reported on how the police’s Central Firearm Register, which government says is meant to improve control over legal firearms and “prevent the proliferation of illegally possessed firearms,” </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-02-28-in-saps-veritas-how-the-dangerous-police-firearms-control-offices-symbolise-a-service-in-crisis/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is in disarray</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Police officers have before been arrested on suspicion of </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2020-06-18-saps-drag-in-alleged-underworld-figure-and-10-cops-after-illegal-gun-licence-racket-exposed/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fraudulently creating firearm licences</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for suspects who should not have access to these.</span>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has also previously reported on </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-02-07-police-are-still-arming-criminals-despite-plans-to-stop-the-scourge/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Project Impi</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which became known as SA’s guns-to-gangs investigation.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It emerged, via court processes indirectly linked to this investigation, that in the Western Cape between 2010 and 2016, firearms smuggled from police officers to gangsters had been used in 1,666 murders and 1,403 attempted murders. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Horrifically, </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-06-03-class-action-pending-families-of-those-shot-with-cop-smuggled-firearms-to-take-on-police/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at least 261 children were shot</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This equates to an average of roughly 43 children shot annually over the six years.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2016 </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2016-07-04-when-hell-is-not-hot-enough-a-top-cop-who-supplied-weapons-to-countrys-gangsters-and-right-wingers/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">former police colonel Chris Prinsloo</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was sentenced to 18 years in jail for his role in the saga — he admitted to selling around 2,000 firearms that were meant to have been destroyed, allegedly to a businessman who was accused of smuggling them to gangsters.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1276650\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/OD-Caryn-Texas-SA-gangs6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"408\" /> Members of the South African Police Services (SAPS) retrieve the bodies of two women and a man at a low-water pedestrian bridge between Oakdene and Sarepta on September 16, 2021 in Cape Town, South Africa. (Photo: Gallo Images/Die Burger/Jaco Marais)</p>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> previously, in October 2020, reported that </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2020-10-16-officials-mum-top-cop-sentenced-to-18-years-for-flooding-cape-flats-with-illegal-guns-is-out-on-parole-after-four-years/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prinsloo had been released on parole</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after serving only four years of his sentence.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Project Impi saga suggested the South African government, in the form of the SA police Service (SAPS), had blood on its hands for failing to ensure the safekeeping of firearms meant to be stored with the very individuals tasked with tackling crime — cops.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A former policeman, </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-11-16-axed-detective-boss-jeremy-vearey-will-still-push-for-reinstatement-after-dismissal-decision-upheld/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jeremy Vearey</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who had been one of the key investigators driving Project Impi, in an October 2016 affidavit referencing Project Impi, even stated: “What had [also] become obvious… was the potential for civil liability on the part of the SAPS. They had been in possession of thousands of firearms which they were supposed to destroy. Instead, they were released to gangs.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gangs, in turn, are shredding children’s security.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is still not clear what happened to all the firearms flagged under Project Impi. Some could still be in the hands of gangsters.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Ongoing reality — hostages of crime</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Monday, Western Cape community safety MEC </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-04-25-reagan-allen-new-wc-mec-for-community-safety-vows-to-make-a-bloody-difference/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reagen Allen</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, reacting to recent gang shootings, said: “Living in fear is not what we want for any community across the Western Cape. The current situation is unacceptable, as our residents cannot be held hostage by a criminal element whose only intent is to instil fear in our communities.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next day, </span><a href=\"https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/speeches-remarks/2022/05/24/remarks-by-president-biden-on-the-school-shooting-in-uvalde-texas/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">US President Joe Biden</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, referring to the Texas tragedy, said: “There are parents who will never see their child again, never have them jump in bed and cuddle with them. Parents who will never be the same.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“To lose a child is like having a piece of your soul ripped away. There’s a hollowness in your chest, and you feel like you’re being sucked into it and never going to be able to get out. It’s suffocating. And it’s never quite the same…</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“And… many scores of little children… witnessed… their friends die as if they’re on a battlefield, for God’s sake. They’ll live with it the rest of their lives.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biden's words are also applicable to countless families and children in SA. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The difference, though, is that children in this country’s gang hotspots must deal with shooting-related trauma while trying to stay alive in “battlefields” where bullets are repeatedly fired over their doorsteps, across their play areas, and outside their schools. </span><b>DM</b>\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[hearken id=\"daily-maverick/9472\"]</span>",

(Photo: Allison Dinner / AFP)[/caption]\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the same day of this </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-05-25-fourteen-students-and-a-teacher-killed-in-texas-school-shooting/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mass school shooting</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the second deadliest in US history, police in the Western Cape, which is known as South Africa’s gangsterism capital, were trying to stamp out gang shootings in suburbs that have become known for related violence.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Police in the province issued a statement saying a woman was arrested and a 9mm pistol with ammunition confiscated during “efforts to bring stability and combat gang-related shooting in the Manenberg area.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These gang battles have had a direct impact on generations of children.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Shootings affect school children in SA’s gang hotspots</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The day before police issued the statement about their operations in Manenberg, </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick’s </span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tamsin Metelerkamp</span> <a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-05-23-gunfire-outside-manenberg-schools-sends-children-scrambling-for-cover-not-for-the-first-time/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: “Several schools and an early childhood development centre in Manenberg on the Cape Flats were affected by gang violence last week. A shootout… saw learners in classrooms at Red River Primary School taking cover on the floor. Gang violence in the area is an ongoing problem and is traumatising teachers and learners alike.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The surge of gang violence in </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-06-18-cape-of-fear-nobody-dares-to-stand-by-a-window-when-gangs-are-involved-in-a-shoot-out/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manenberg</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is nothing new. Like other Western Cape gang hotspots, which under apartheid were dumping grounds for residents who were not white, shootings have rocked it for decades, shattering and ending many lives.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has become a terrible cycle — gang battles (for whatever reason, including competition over drug trade turf) develop, shootings increase, police and </span><a href=\"https://www.westerncape.gov.za/news/minister-allen-engages-manenberg-and-heideveld-residents-manenberg-shootings\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">politicians react</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the violence ebbs… and then picks up again.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While South Africa has not seen mass shootings inside schools like the US has, it struggles with ongoing gang violence and there have been crimes involving firearms causing several casualties.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, there has recently been </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-05-09-six-dead-in-latest-cape-mass-shooting-police-make-arrest-for-previous-killings/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a spate of mass shootings in Khayelitsha</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with one of the latest cases involving six men gunned down in a single incident earlier this month.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>A tale of two countries</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Texas school shooting, understandably, is making news headlines internationally.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is shocking and comparisons to other incidents cannot mitigate the tragedy.</span>\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_1276540\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"720\"]<img class=\"size-full wp-image-1276540\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/OD-Caryn-Texas-SA-gangs2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"396\" /> Crosses bearing names of victims line an area on school ground following a mass shooting at the Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, USA, 26 May 2022. (Photo: EPA-EFE/Tannen Maury)[/caption]\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While global scrutiny is now on the US, violence unfolding in Manenberg and other gang flashpoints in South Africa, particularly in the Western Cape, is reported on locally, the headlines becoming repeats of what has been reported on for years already.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is not uncommon to see a headline referring to a child or children getting caught in gang crossfire.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The intent driving whoever pulled the triggers in all these cases — from the Texas massacre to Western Cape gang battles in which children are trapped and the Khayelitsha killings — is undoubtedly different.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the result is the same – mounting murder tolls.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the case of the Texas shooting, those targeted — children — are also those getting caught up in gang crossfire in the Western Cape.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, as the US deals with issues relating to firearm controls and school massacres, SA has its own crisis in this realm involving children, gang violence and illicit firearms.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Constantly mounting massacre </b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The wounding and murdering of SA’s children in gang hotspots effectively equate to a drawn-out, constantly developing massacre with no end in sight.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This tragedy is unquantifiable in terms of trauma.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Incidents in which children have been caught — or targeted — in such shootings include:</span>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>The <a href=\"https://www.news24.com/news24/southafrica/news/man-killed-woman-and-baby-injured-in-cape-town-shooting-20220421\">wounding last month of a one-year-old</a> during a shooting, which <i>News24</i> reported on, in the Cape Town suburb of Lansdowne.</li>\r\n \t<li>A stray bullet <a href=\"https://ewn.co.za/2021/12/29/uthmaan-taliep-toddler-killed-in-suspected-gang-shooting-laid-to-rest\">struck two-year-old Uthmaan Taliep</a> in the face in December last year in the Cape Town suburb of Belhar, killing the toddler.</li>\r\n \t<li>In November 2019 <i>Daily Maverick</i> reported on Fiona Steleki, a mother from the Cape Town suburb of Nyanga, <a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2019-11-28-they-shot-my-son-in-the-head-four-times-while-he-was-lying-on-the-ground/\">whose son Shaun Zuko Steleki, 16, was murdered</a> back in October 2014. “My son was gunned down by a known gangster,” she had said. “They had threatened him for a long time, they wanted him to join the gangs… Shaun went to school in Gugulethu and some of his classmates were from an opposing gang. Shaun faced one gang where he lived and another where he went to school.”</li>\r\n \t<li>In August 2019 <a href=\"https://www.news24.com/news24/southafrica/news/heavily-pregnant-mom-shot-dead-in-cape-town-20190810\">a pregnant mother was murdered</a> when she was caught in gunfire in Manenberg.</li>\r\n \t<li>Six-month-old <a href=\"https://www.news24.com/News24/she-smiled-at-me-dad-recalls-the-moment-he-realised-baby-zahnia-had-been-shot-20181008\">Zahnia Woodward was murdered</a> in December 2016 when a stray bullet struck her in the head in the Cape Town suburb of Ocean View. Her father had been holding her at the time she was shot.</li>\r\n \t<li><i>Eyewitness News</i> reported that at the end of May 2016 <a href=\"https://ewn.co.za/2016/06/01/Grandmother-grieves-death-of-her-4-year-old-grandson\">four-year-old Machiano Geswind</a> was killed when a stray bullet struck him while he was standing outside his house in the Cape Town suburb of Delft.</li>\r\n</ul>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many other cases of children becoming statistics — their names either adding to a mounting gang violence murder toll or the number of those wounded in shootings.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bullets have paralysed some children and have remained lodged in others.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A nasty factor contributing to all this is the funnelling of firearms to gangsters. </span>\r\n\r\n<b>261 children shot — SA’s cop corruption and guns crisis</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Claims of cop corruption have surfaced in this arena.</span>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has reported on how the police’s Central Firearm Register, which government says is meant to improve control over legal firearms and “prevent the proliferation of illegally possessed firearms,” </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-02-28-in-saps-veritas-how-the-dangerous-police-firearms-control-offices-symbolise-a-service-in-crisis/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is in disarray</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Police officers have before been arrested on suspicion of </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2020-06-18-saps-drag-in-alleged-underworld-figure-and-10-cops-after-illegal-gun-licence-racket-exposed/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fraudulently creating firearm licences</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for suspects who should not have access to these.</span>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has also previously reported on </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-02-07-police-are-still-arming-criminals-despite-plans-to-stop-the-scourge/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Project Impi</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which became known as SA’s guns-to-gangs investigation.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It emerged, via court processes indirectly linked to this investigation, that in the Western Cape between 2010 and 2016, firearms smuggled from police officers to gangsters had been used in 1,666 murders and 1,403 attempted murders. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Horrifically, </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-06-03-class-action-pending-families-of-those-shot-with-cop-smuggled-firearms-to-take-on-police/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at least 261 children were shot</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This equates to an average of roughly 43 children shot annually over the six years.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2016 </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2016-07-04-when-hell-is-not-hot-enough-a-top-cop-who-supplied-weapons-to-countrys-gangsters-and-right-wingers/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">former police colonel Chris Prinsloo</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was sentenced to 18 years in jail for his role in the saga — he admitted to selling around 2,000 firearms that were meant to have been destroyed, allegedly to a businessman who was accused of smuggling them to gangsters.</span>\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_1276650\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"720\"]<img class=\"size-full wp-image-1276650\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/OD-Caryn-Texas-SA-gangs6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"408\" /> Members of the South African Police Services (SAPS) retrieve the bodies of two women and a man at a low-water pedestrian bridge between Oakdene and Sarepta on September 16, 2021 in Cape Town, South Africa. (Photo: Gallo Images/Die Burger/Jaco Marais)[/caption]\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> previously, in October 2020, reported that </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2020-10-16-officials-mum-top-cop-sentenced-to-18-years-for-flooding-cape-flats-with-illegal-guns-is-out-on-parole-after-four-years/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prinsloo had been released on parole</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after serving only four years of his sentence.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Project Impi saga suggested the South African government, in the form of the SA police Service (SAPS), had blood on its hands for failing to ensure the safekeeping of firearms meant to be stored with the very individuals tasked with tackling crime — cops.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A former policeman, </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-11-16-axed-detective-boss-jeremy-vearey-will-still-push-for-reinstatement-after-dismissal-decision-upheld/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jeremy Vearey</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who had been one of the key investigators driving Project Impi, in an October 2016 affidavit referencing Project Impi, even stated: “What had [also] become obvious… was the potential for civil liability on the part of the SAPS. They had been in possession of thousands of firearms which they were supposed to destroy. Instead, they were released to gangs.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gangs, in turn, are shredding children’s security.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is still not clear what happened to all the firearms flagged under Project Impi. Some could still be in the hands of gangsters.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Ongoing reality — hostages of crime</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Monday, Western Cape community safety MEC </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-04-25-reagan-allen-new-wc-mec-for-community-safety-vows-to-make-a-bloody-difference/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reagen Allen</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, reacting to recent gang shootings, said: “Living in fear is not what we want for any community across the Western Cape. The current situation is unacceptable, as our residents cannot be held hostage by a criminal element whose only intent is to instil fear in our communities.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next day, </span><a href=\"https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/speeches-remarks/2022/05/24/remarks-by-president-biden-on-the-school-shooting-in-uvalde-texas/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">US President Joe Biden</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, referring to the Texas tragedy, said: “There are parents who will never see their child again, never have them jump in bed and cuddle with them. Parents who will never be the same.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“To lose a child is like having a piece of your soul ripped away. There’s a hollowness in your chest, and you feel like you’re being sucked into it and never going to be able to get out. It’s suffocating. And it’s never quite the same…</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“And… many scores of little children… witnessed… their friends die as if they’re on a battlefield, for God’s sake. They’ll live with it the rest of their lives.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biden's words are also applicable to countless families and children in SA. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The difference, though, is that children in this country’s gang hotspots must deal with shooting-related trauma while trying to stay alive in “battlefields” where bullets are repeatedly fired over their doorsteps, across their play areas, and outside their schools. </span><b>DM</b>\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[hearken id=\"daily-maverick/9472\"]</span>",
