"description": "Daily Maverick is an independent online news publication and weekly print newspaper in South Africa.\r\n\r\nIt is known for breaking some of the defining stories of South Africa in the past decade, including the Marikana Massacre, in which the South African Police Service killed 34 miners in August 2012.\r\n\r\nIt also investigated the Gupta Leaks, which won the 2019 Global Shining Light Award.\r\n\r\nThat investigation was credited with exposing the Indian-born Gupta family and former President Jacob Zuma for their role in the systemic political corruption referred to as state capture.\r\n\r\nIn 2018, co-founder and editor-in-chief Branislav ‘Branko’ Brkic was awarded the country’s prestigious Nat Nakasa Award, recognised for initiating the investigative collaboration after receiving the hard drive that included the email tranche.\r\n\r\nIn 2021, co-founder and CEO Styli Charalambous also received the award.\r\n\r\nDaily Maverick covers the latest political and news developments in South Africa with breaking news updates, analysis, opinions and more.",

"contents": "‘Our lives are massively impacted by load shedding… But perhaps the most devastating effect of load shedding isn’t physical, it’s emotional,” said Brandon de Kock, director of storytelling for Brandmapp, during a <em>Daily Maverick </em>webinar to discuss the SA Blackout Report on Tuesday.\r\n\r\nhttps://youtu.be/hzV8I-WhM2k\r\n\r\nDe Kock spoke to <em>Daily Maverick</em> associate editor Ferial Haffajee and<em> Business Maverick</em> journalist Neesa Moodley about the new report by BrandMapp-Silverstone, which looks at the impact load shedding is having on taxpaying South Africans.\r\n\r\n<em>Read more in </em>Daily Maverick: <em>“ </em><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-02-06-people-are-broken-daily-maverick-readers-describe-toll-rolling-blackouts-take-on-their-health-and-businesses/\"><em>‘People are broken’ — Daily Maverick readers describe toll rolling blackouts take on their health and businesses</em></a><em>”</em>\r\n\r\nDuring the webinar, Haffajee said the SA Blackout Report amplified what <em>Daily Maverick</em> readers have been saying in response to its surveys – that they are “completely kneecapped by the power cuts” that reached <a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-02-22-eskoms-ability-to-provide-power-is-steadily-worsening-csir-stats-show/\">unprecedented levels in 2022</a>.\r\n\r\n(Read previous responses from <em>Daily Maverick</em> readers about their load shedding experiences <a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-11-18-daily-maverick-readers-give-a-first-hand-account-of-how-load-shedding-has-played-havoc-with-their-businesses/\">here</a> and <a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-11-22-put-to-the-test-daily-maverick-readers-offload-their-woes-about-studying-when-load-shedding-hits/\">here</a>.)\r\n\r\nHaffajee said reader responses show that people don’t have the means to invest in expensive equipment such as surge protectors, inverters, batteries or <a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-01-31-rolling-blackouts-here-are-your-options-and-what-they-are-likely-to-cost-you/\">by installing solar panels</a>.\r\n\r\nOn this issue, the SA Blackout Report found that lower-income households had been significantly more affected in terms of physical damage to equipment and household appliances.\r\n\r\nCuriously, the single biggest solution to dealing with rolling blackouts for middle-income taxpayers, the report found, was to purchase candles – 79% of taxpayers earning between R10,000 and R20,000 a month cited candles as their load shedding quick fix. The same goes for 57% of taxpayers earning between R20,000 and R40,000 a month.\r\n\r\n(<em>Maverick Life</em> reporter Malibongwe Tyilo <a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-01-26-why-surge-protectors-are-important-for-your-equipment-especially-your-computer/\">unpacks here why surge protectors are important for appliances</a>.)\r\n\r\nLoad shedding is hurting South Africans in more ways than one, and the implications go far beyond social, economic or work disruptions.\r\n\r\n“It is <a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-10-11-helpless-anxious-and-depressed-how-eskom-blackouts-hit-ordinary-south-africans/\">harming our mental health</a> as well,” said Haffajee.\r\n\r\nWhen asked by Moodley what the responses said about how people were coping, De Kock responded: “Not nearly as well as you may think.”\r\n<h4><strong>Ditching the dark</strong></h4>\r\nDuring the webinar, one attendee asked whether the survey had asked people if they had ever <a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-09-16-south-africa-may-lose-53-of-graduates-to-emigration-survey-shows/\">considered emigrating as a result of load shedding</a>.\r\n\r\nIn response to the survey, 44% of participants said they had considered leaving the country. Additionally, 58% of respondents under the age of 35 said they had considered emigrating.\r\n\r\n“That’s not a good statistic… The people who want to go are young, highly skilled people who are looking at a future that has nothing to do with ethnicity or culture – it simply has to do with prospects for a good life. Why sit around in a country with no power?” said De Kock.\r\n\r\n“It’s very sad, but that’s the reality.”\r\n<h4><strong>Crime and corruption</strong></h4>\r\nMost of the survey’s respondents – 92% – believed crime and corruption were Eskom’s main problems.\r\n\r\n<em>Read more in </em>Daily Maverick: <em>“</em><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-02-27-introducing-the-four-crime-cartels-that-have-brought-eskom-and-south-africa-to-their-knees/\"><em>Introducing the four crime cartels that have brought Eskom and South Africa to their knees</em></a><em>”</em>\r\n\r\nFollowing this, 82% believed the main problem at Eskom was government incompetence; 63% believed the ANC’s <a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-03-02-weak-candidates-make-the-cut-in-public-service-due-to-exceptionally-low-requirements-report/\">controversial policy of cadre deployment was the main culprit</a>, while 61% argued the main issue was a lack of political will to solve the 15-year crisis.\r\n<h4><strong>2024 elections</strong></h4>\r\n“People are going to make very different voting choices next year and they’re going to do so because of power cuts, corruption and government incompetence,” said Haffajee.\r\n\r\nAccording to survey responses, 65% of middle-income taxpayers are seriously considering not voting for the ANC as a means to solve the power crisis, while 62% of respondents said they had considered not voting for the ruling party in 2024 in order to solve the crisis.\r\n\r\n“It speaks to fairly rapid socio-political change,” remarked De Kock.\r\n\r\nThe percentage of respondents in each province who have considered not voting for the ANC in 2024, are:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>60% of respondents in Gauteng;</li>\r\n \t<li>62% of respondents in KwaZulu-Natal; and</li>\r\n \t<li>67% of respondents in the Western Cape.</li>\r\n</ul>\r\nThe 2021 local government elections <a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-11-02-dismal-voter-turnout-at-south-africas-municipal-polls-a-blow-to-democracy/\">saw a record low voter turnout</a>.\r\n\r\nWrapping up the webinar, De Kock left viewers with something to think about:\r\n\r\n“If everybody under the age of 40 in South Africa, who is currently eligible to vote but are not registered, voted for the same party in the next election, that party would win… It’s an extraordinary stat.” <strong>DM</strong>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://createsend.com/h/d/38911C881454EE15\"><em>Subscribe to the </em>Daily Maverick<em> webinar newsletter</em></a><em> and keep up to date on our upcoming conversations.</em>",

"description": "Eskom is the primary electricity supplier and generator of power in South Africa. It is a state-owned enterprise that was established in 1923 as the Electricity Supply Commission (ESCOM) and later changed its name to Eskom. The company is responsible for generating, transmitting, and distributing electricity to the entire country, and it is one of the largest electricity utilities in the world, supplying about 90% of the country's electricity needs. It generates roughly 30% of the electricity used\r\nin Africa.\r\n\r\nEskom operates a variety of power stations, including coal-fired, nuclear, hydro, and renewable energy sources, and has a total installed capacity of approximately 46,000 megawatts. The company is also responsible for maintaining the electricity grid infrastructure, which includes power lines and substations that distribute electricity to consumers.\r\n\r\nEskom plays a critical role in the South African economy, providing electricity to households, businesses, and industries, and supporting economic growth and development. However, the company has faced several challenges in recent years, including financial difficulties, aging infrastructure, and operational inefficiencies, which have led to power outages and load shedding in the country.\r\n\r\nDaily Maverick has reported on this extensively, including its recently published investigations from the Eskom Intelligence Files which demonstrated extensive sabotage at the power utility. Intelligence reports obtained by Daily Maverick linked two unnamed senior members of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Cabinet to four criminal cartels operating inside Eskom. The intelligence links the cartels to the sabotage of Eskom’s power stations and to a programme of political destabilisation which has contributed to the current power crisis.",
