Young people are able to use this as a tool to showcase their skill, while expressing how they feel about the world.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are the words of Sumaiyah Ally Kotty, co-founder of Studio Sketch, a Joburg-based art and architecture studio. Both she and fellow founding member, Mariam Bawa, received their Bachelor of Architecture in 2020. They are now completing their Honours at Wits University.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bawa and Kotty, in collaboration with the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation (AKF), have curated an art exhibition – </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Chamber Of Thoughts</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> – that will form part of the </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-06-07-young-people-to-hold-youth-day-parade-at-union-buildings-for-responsibility-equality-and-gender-and-climate-justice/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Youth Day Parade in Pretoria</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on 16 June. It draws back to Youth Day and how youth stood up and voiced their rights,” said Kotty. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“This day resembles the power the youth holds, and power can be expressed not only in a form of protest but also in a form of emotion and art.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Youth have greater courage to address issues and tend to be more hopeful, continued Kotty, providing enthusiasm in a world that silences too many voices.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1296368\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/YS-Parade-exhibition_2-Image2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"980\" /> This image, representing justice, was captured by photographer Aamena Vally (21), resident of Pretoria. The aim of the initiative was to compile a series of works that related to the personal reflections of young people on the current state of South Africa, as well as their ability to imagine a better future for the country.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the contributors were students of Bawa and Kotty. The pair provide art classes for youngsters in their suburb of Lenasia, Johannesburg, on Saturdays. Their students range in age from seven to 16.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“I found it interesting to see what they would come up with because a lot of them, their education was different from ours, is different from ours… so it’s interesting to see what they think about our country,” said Kotty.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The exhibition holds a range of mediums, including art, photography, poetry and music.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>The artists</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pretoria-based photographer Aamena Vally, 21, contributed a series of images for the exhibition, capturing the power of a generation.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Over the past two years, we’ve experienced the power of our generation, with the Gen Z generation arguably one of the most woke generations since 1960,” she said. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Each an outspoken advocate [against] social injustice, racism, inequality, poverty and climate change. (Image: Supplied/Sumaiyah Ally Kotty)</p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through the medium of poetry, Kotty spoke about the safety of women, and the failure of government to protect them.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within the piece, </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The South African Woman, </span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">repetition has been used to evoke the urgency needed to address the country’s gender-based violence and femicide problem.</span>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I’m a South African woman</span></i>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And my kind is depleting. </span></i>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are born in numbers, </span></i>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And killed for gratification. </span></i>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WE are courageous and braver than brave</span></i>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But found within shallow graves.</span></i>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are mothers, daughters and sisters </span></i>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are south african woman. </span></i>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And we are depleting </span></i>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No man, no gun, can protect us </span></i>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nor does a woman feel protected. </span></i>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its a plague it’s a war, it’s a battlefield </span></i>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beaten, to the core. </span></i>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do we rise? Do we leave? </span></i>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BUT in this land the south african woman lived no more.</span></i>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a collaborative effort, Bawa and Kotty’s art students produced a timeline of South Africa’s history. (Image: Supplied/Sumaiyah Ally Kotty)[/caption]\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through the medium of poetry, Kotty spoke about the safety of women, and the failure of government to protect them.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within the piece, </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The South African Woman, </span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">repetition has been used to evoke the urgency needed to address the country’s gender-based violence and femicide problem.</span>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I’m a South African woman</span></i>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And my kind is depleting. </span></i>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are born in numbers, </span></i>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And killed for gratification. </span></i>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WE are courageous and braver than brave</span></i>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But found within shallow graves.</span></i>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are mothers, daughters and sisters </span></i>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are south african woman. </span></i>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And we are depleting </span></i>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No man, no gun, can protect us </span></i>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nor does a woman feel protected. </span></i>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its a plague it’s a war, it’s a battlefield </span></i>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beaten, to the core. </span></i>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do we rise? Do we leave? </span></i>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BUT in this land the south african woman lived no more.</span></i>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a collaborative effort, Bawa and Kotty’s art students produced a timeline of South Africa’s history.
