"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 13 December 2021, </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Time</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> magazine</span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/TIME/status/1470372755384291331?s=20\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> billionaire Elon Musk, as its Person of The Year. The announcement was accompanied by a relatively</span><a href=\"https://time.com/person-of-the-year-2021-elon-musk/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">long article</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> covering many of the billionaire’s initiatives, which have changed our world in some ways and are set to fundamentally transform it in the future. Musk has no shortage of detractors, from those who believe the federal support for his SpaceX initiative would be money better spent improving terrestrial life, to those who argue that his satellite network, Starlink, could lead to unprecedented space pollution.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whatever side of the argument one agrees with, it would be hard to ignore the potential impact of both these initiatives on the future of humanity. But it is Musk’s Tesla, the electric vehicle and energy company, that the </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Time</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> article argues has already significantly changed the world of automotive for the better: “</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That has made Musk arguably the biggest private contributor to the fight against climate change. Had the 800,000 Teslas sold in the last year been gas-powered cars, they would have emitted more than 40 million metric tons of CO₂ over their lifetimes – equivalent to the annual emissions of Finland.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, in South Africa, where Tesla has not yet indicated any plans to make its vehicles available, fully electric vehicles are still far from achieving significant market uptake. As recently reported by</span><a href=\"https://www.engineeringnews.co.za/article/ev-revolution-to-be-felt-in-sa-in-2022-but-affordability-concerns-linger-2021-10-29\"> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Engineering News</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, “The current frontrunner in the South African [fully electric vehicle] market is BMW, with 455 i3s having been sold up to the end of June this year.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, South Africans have a very limited selection of fully electric cars to choose from – six, to be specific: the</span><a href=\"https://www.bmw.co.za/en/all-models/bmw-i/i3/2020/bmw-i3-ueberblick.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BMW i3</span></a><a href=\"https://www.bmw.co.za/en/all-models/bmw-i/bmw-ix-new/2020/Highlights.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, BMW iX</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,</span><a href=\"https://www.mini.co.za/en_ZA/home/range/electric.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mini Cooper SE</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,</span><a href=\"https://www.jaguar.co.za/jaguar-range/i-pace/index.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jaguar I-Pace</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, </span><a href=\"https://www.cars.co.za/motoring-news/porsche-taycan-rwd-review-will-this-car-make-you-want-to-go-electric/95468/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Porsche Taycan</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and</span><a href=\"https://www.cars.co.za/motoring-news/porsche-taycan-cross-turismo-review-fully-electric-fully-sideways-on-gravel/108501/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taycan Cross Turismo</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as well as the </span><a href=\"https://www.volvocars.com/za/v/cars/xc40-electric\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Volvo XC40 Recharge</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides the scarcity of models, there are also numerous reasons why the country has been slow on the uptake. These include: range anxiety, an underdeveloped charging infrastructure, concerns about load shedding and electricity supply, and the taxes imposed on electric vehicles, which puts them out of reach for the majority of drivers. Then there’s the fact that the models that are currently available fit into the premium sector of the market, the cheapest being the Mini Cooper SE at a starting price of R685,000.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, considering the goals set in the</span><a href=\"https://unfccc.int/process-and-meetings/the-paris-agreement/the-paris-agreement\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paris Agreement</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as well as numerous commitments made by car manufacturers to comply with those goals by significantly reducing or altogether halting the production of internal combustion engine cars in the next 10 to 15 years, there seems to be no avoiding a future of electric mobility, which, based on climate change predictions, seems to be the only viable future for humanity.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In preparation, some manufacturers are already making plans to bring more fully electric models to their South African line-up. Next year, 2022, promises to more than double the options available for drivers who wish to buy a fully electric vehicle, albeit at a premium price point. Below are the models that have already been announced for the South African market in 2022.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Audi makes an electric statement</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Audi plans to release not one but three e-tron models, across a total of six derivatives, in the first quarter of 2022.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1135020\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/962x540-etron-suv.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"403\" /> Audi e-tron 55 SUV. Photo: audi.co.za</p>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://www.audi.co.za/za/web/en/models/tron/audi-e-tron.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Audi e-tron 55</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> SUV is the most affordable of the range, starting at R1,990,000, with its S-line derivative at R2,045,000. Starting at </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">R1,650,000, the manufacturer promises a range of up to 425km for its xDrive40 derivative, and up to 630km for the xDrive50.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1135024\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/bmw_i4_m50_m_performance_parts_09.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" /> BMW i4 M50. At the time of publishing, there was no price listed as yet.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Luxury electrified</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to its</span><a href=\"https://www.mercedes-benz.co.za/passengercars/models.html?group=all&subgroup=see-all&view=BODYTYPE&filters=ELECTRIC\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">website</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as of April 2022, Mercedes-Benz will make two fully electric sedans and two fully electric SUVs available on the SA market. Sascha Sauer, MD of Audi SA</span><a href=\"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlK7I9WBt4w&t=139s\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">promised</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that a new model would be added every year. Mercedes-Benz has also</span><a href=\"https://www.engineeringnews.co.za/article/merc-aims-to-go-all-electric-where-markets-allow-first-ev-to-launch-in-sa-in-2022-2021-08-12\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">promised</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> additional models to those announced. As recently reported by</span><a href=\"https://www.engineeringnews.co.za/article/ev-revolution-to-be-felt-in-sa-in-2022-but-affordability-concerns-linger-2021-10-29\"> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Engineering News</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, “The current frontrunner in the South African [fully electric vehicle] market is BMW, with 455 i3s having been sold up to the end of June this year.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, South Africans have a very limited selection of fully electric cars to choose from – six, to be specific: the</span><a href=\"https://www.bmw.co.za/en/all-models/bmw-i/i3/2020/bmw-i3-ueberblick.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BMW i3</span></a><a href=\"https://www.bmw.co.za/en/all-models/bmw-i/bmw-ix-new/2020/Highlights.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, BMW iX</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,</span><a href=\"https://www.mini.co.za/en_ZA/home/range/electric.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mini Cooper SE</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,</span><a href=\"https://www.jaguar.co.za/jaguar-range/i-pace/index.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jaguar I-Pace</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, </span><a href=\"https://www.cars.co.za/motoring-news/porsche-taycan-rwd-review-will-this-car-make-you-want-to-go-electric/95468/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Porsche Taycan</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and</span><a href=\"https://www.cars.co.za/motoring-news/porsche-taycan-cross-turismo-review-fully-electric-fully-sideways-on-gravel/108501/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taycan Cross Turismo</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as well as the </span><a href=\"https://www.volvocars.com/za/v/cars/xc40-electric\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Volvo XC40 Recharge</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides the scarcity of models, there are also numerous reasons why the country has been slow on the uptake. These include: range anxiety, an underdeveloped charging infrastructure, concerns about load shedding and electricity supply, and the taxes imposed on electric vehicles, which puts them out of reach for the majority of drivers. Then there’s the fact that the models that are currently available fit into the premium sector of the market, the cheapest being the Mini Cooper SE at a starting price of R685,000.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, considering the goals set in the</span><a href=\"https://unfccc.int/process-and-meetings/the-paris-agreement/the-paris-agreement\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paris Agreement</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as well as numerous commitments made by car manufacturers to comply with those goals by significantly reducing or altogether halting the production of internal combustion engine cars in the next 10 to 15 years, there seems to be no avoiding a future of electric mobility, which, based on climate change predictions, seems to be the only viable future for humanity.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In preparation, some manufacturers are already making plans to bring more fully electric models to their South African line-up. Next year, 2022, promises to more than double the options available for drivers who wish to buy a fully electric vehicle, albeit at a premium price point. Below are the models that have already been announced for the South African market in 2022.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Audi makes an electric statement</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Audi plans to release not one but three e-tron models, across a total of six derivatives, in the first quarter of 2022.</span>\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_1135020\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"720\"]<img class=\"size-full wp-image-1135020\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/962x540-etron-suv.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"403\" /> Audi e-tron 55 SUV. At the time of publishing, there was no price listed as yet.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Luxury electrified</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to its</span><a href=\"https://www.mercedes-benz.co.za/passengercars/models.html?group=all&subgroup=see-all&view=BODYTYPE&filters=ELECTRIC\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">website</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as of April 2022, Mercedes-Benz will make two fully electric sedans and two fully electric SUVs available on the SA market. Sascha Sauer, MD of Audi SA</span><a href=\"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlK7I9WBt4w&t=139s\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">promised</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that a new model would be added every year. Mercedes-Benz has also</span><a href=\"https://www.engineeringnews.co.za/article/merc-aims-to-go-all-electric-where-markets-allow-first-ev-to-launch-in-sa-in-2022-2021-08-12\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">promised</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> additional models to those announced. Volkswagen</span><a href=\"https://www.vw.co.za/en/electric/our-road-to-electric.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has been conducting</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> test fleets of six fully electric vehicles in South Africa since 2020, and expects to have a range of electric vehicles available on the local market by 2023. </span><b>DM/ML</b>",
