A century later, at the beginning of 1900, there were two million,” explains Hains. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-08-11-world-elephant-day-how-are-the-pachyderms-doing-in-africa/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rapid decrease</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from 25 million to two million elephants in one century was predominantly driven by trophy hunting in the era. But, currently the numbers are down to 400,000 – and still dropping, as a </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2018-09-04-nearly-100-elephants-killed-for-ivory-in-botswana/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hundred</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> more are killed daily, explains Hain. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“The </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-11-14-battle-lines-drawn-over-the-future-of-elephants/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">projection</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is that by 2040, they will be extinct,” says Hain, “These are real wildlife realities that we are having to grapple with.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hain says that’s the point of his book, to get people not to think of politics and wildlife as separate but connected.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Our very future as humankind is dependent on our ecosystem and biodiversity and these precious animals that we’re killing off,” says Hain. “It’s all connected.”</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-1493714 size-full\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Jamie-elephantWebinar_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1973\" height=\"912\" /> (Photo: Goodreads)</p>\r\n\r\n<b>Ivory links</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The book discusses the links between politics, organised crime and wildlife that are seen today. “The problem is there’s a legalised trade in wildlife and then there’s the illegal criminal underworld linked to political corruption, and they blur into each other,” says Hain.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elephants are </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2014-05-23-kruger-elephant-poaching-incident-is-not-the-first-in-more-than-ten-years/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">poached</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> across Africa for their tusks, which contain ivory, explains Hain. The ivory is seen as a status symbol, or ground down into powder and used as an aphrodisiac in areas of Asia, he adds.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Haines says rich elites believe in its properties and potency as an aphrodisiac, despite scientific proof that this is not the case, and instead it “sells like gold dust”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“This is big business. It’s a big crime.” </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brutal poaching of elephants and ripping out of their tusks is a big source of income for criminals as low as local poachers, to big city gangsters and “right through to international criminal syndicates” according to Hain.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This reason, maximising profit, is why horrifying methods of killing elephants may be adopted.
