"contents": "\r\n\r\n<p><strong><span ><span>Tanzania</span></span></strong><span ><span> last week arrested a leading opposition figure, days after he called President John Magufuli a “dictator”.</span></span></p>\r\n<p><span ><span>Tundu Lissu, chief whip of the main opposition party Chadema, called on the international community at a press conference last Monday to cut off aid to the country.</span></span></p>\r\n<p>“<span ><span>The dictator and his government” needed to be “isolated politically, diplomatically and economically”, Lissu reportedly said, <a href=\"http://www.trtworld.com/mea/tanzanian-opposition-leader-arrested-for-insulting-president-405516\" target=\"_blank\">according to TRT World</a>.</span></span></p>\r\n<p><span ><span>Lissu was arrested three days later at Julius Nyerere International Airport in the capital Dar Es Salaam.</span></span></p>\r\n<p><span ><span>A police spokesperson <a href=\"http://www.wral.com/tanzania-opposition-figure-arrested-for-rebuking-president/16833338/\" target=\"_blank\">told AP</a> that Lissu was being questioned over “making anti-government speeches that could lead to unrest”.</span></span></p>\r\n<p><span ><span>Lissu is the second Chadema MP arrested in July alone.</span></span></p>\r\n<p><span ><span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2017-07-10-the-sadc-wrap-zambias-lungu-fired-up-on-repression-tanzanias-magufuli-jails-opposition-mp/#.WXRSBdOGPBI\" target=\"_blank\">Earlier this month</a>, Halima Mdee was taken in for questioning after calling on citizens to “denounce this tendency of President John Pombe Magufuli who thinks his declarations are law”.</span></span></p>\r\n<p><span ><span>Insulting the president has been a criminal offence in Tanzania since 2015.</span></span></p>\r\n<p><span ><span>The Tanganyika Lawyers Society, of which Lissu is president, released a statement condemning the arrest of people “when they air their personal views”, <a href=\"http://www.africanews.com/2017/07/22/tanzania-lawyers-union-condemns-arrest-of-its-president-opposition-leader/\" target=\"_blank\">reported </a></span></span><em><a href=\"http://www.africanews.com/2017/07/22/tanzania-lawyers-union-condemns-arrest-of-its-president-opposition-leader/\" target=\"_blank\"><span ><span>The Citizen</span></span></a></em><span ><span>.</span></span></p>\r\n<p><span ><span>Government spokesman Hassan Abbas’ <a href=\"http://www.africanews.com/2017/07/22/tanzania-lawyers-union-condemns-arrest-of-its-president-opposition-leader/\" target=\"_blank\">response</a>?
