"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within a few hours in Cape Town one of the most high-profile organised crime cases that is developing in the city inched ahead in a courtroom – and nearby, in a separate incident, a shooting took place.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two matters, though, have some indirect overlaps.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Friday 5 May alleged underworld kingpin </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-05-05-nafiz-modack-facing-over-3000-criminal-charges-says-he-will-apply-for-bail/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nafiz Modack appeared in the Western Cape High Court</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to face more than 3,100 charges along with 14 co-accused.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They face counts including murder, attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, extortion, money laundering and abduction.</span>\r\n<h4><b>A court case and a shooting</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the charges are linked to </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-11-19-we-were-lied-to-the-fiasco-of-top-secret-ipid-report-into-the-assassination-of-senior-cop-charl-kinnear/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the assassination of Lieutenant-Colonel Charl Kinnear</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who was shot outside his Bishop Lavis home in Cape Town on 18 September 2020.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the time, Kinnear had been investigating individuals including </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-06-24-killing-charl-kinnear-could-collapse-critical-cop-gun-corruption-cases/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Modack, as well as fellow police officers</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The high-profile Modack criminal case, in which the state has accused Modack of heading a criminal organisation known as the “</span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-05-01-murder-extortion-and-corruption-nafiz-modack-and-co-accused-back-in-court-on-friday/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Modack Enterprise</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">” was postponed from Friday to next month for pre-trial proceedings to continue.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, on the same day that Modack and his co-accused appeared in the Western Cape High Court, Joel Booysen, the son of Jerome “Donkie” Booysen, was wounded in a shooting in Green Point.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1679830\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Caryn-Shootings-organised-crime-Cape-07.05.2023.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"452\" /> Joel Booysen. (Photo: TikTok)</p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Western Cape High Court is roughly 1.4 kilometres from the area where Joel was shot.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Members of his family have been on police radar in the past.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a previous court case, a cop alleged Jerome was </span><a href=\"https://www.pressreader.com/south-africa/pretoria-news/20120111/281642482038874\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the head of the Sexy Boys gang</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while in another case he was accused of </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-02-18-two-court-cases-start-unravelling-the-tangled-web-of-cape-towns-criminal-underworld/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mandrax dealing</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jerome’s brother (Joel’s uncle) Colin Booysen was previously an accused in an extortion-related case with Modack but that case ended with their acquittals.</span>\r\n<h4><b>AKA, plus ‘bottles and ballers’</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Joel’s TikTok account, he had known </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-02-14-police-tight-lipped-on-rapper-aka-murder-probe-as-father-reveals-plans-for-dignified-send-off/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rapper Kiernan Forbes, also known as AKA, who was murdered</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a shooting outside a Durban restaurant in February.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a post about Forbes’s killing, Joel had posted: “never dreamt the day would come when I’d have to say Goodbye to you FOREVER ?❤ Forever In My Heart Cuz.”</span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://www.tiktok.com/@joelbooysen_cpt/video/7198923677981805830?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc&web_id=7229728704174884357\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">https://www.tiktok.com/@joelbooysen_cpt/video/7198923677981805830?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc&web_id=7229728704174884357</span></i></a>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to his TikTok account, Joel was the owner of Jet Lounge, as well as the establishment </span><a href=\"https://www.instagram.com/sneaker_cartel_sa/?hl=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sneaker Cartel</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, situated in Cape Town’s iconic Long Street, and which is described on its Instagram page as “The city’s home of bottles and ballers.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nightclub security linked to Long Street has previously been a source of underworld tensions in Cape Town.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Read on Daily Maverick: </b><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2019-06-27-the-enforcers-inside-cape-towns-deadly-nightclub-battles/\"><b>The Enforcers – Inside Cape Town’s Deadly Nightclub Battles</b></a>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This loops back to his father – Jerome’s name previously cropped up in nightclub security issues.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Nightclubs, security and steroids</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to what previously surfaced in other Cape Town court cases, there were two groups tussling for control of security initially focused on the city – on the one side was Modack and a group of men, and on the other side, a group including </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-05-15-making-sense-of-cape-towns-confusing-rush-of-underworld-cases/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mark Lifman and Jerome Booysen</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-841268\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/Caryn-booysen-option-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"360\" /> Jerome ‘Donkie’ Booysen leaves the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court on 22 December 2020. (Photo: Adrian de Kock)</p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a previous court case relating to Modack, police had alleged the Lifman and </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-05-15-making-sense-of-cape-towns-confusing-rush-of-underworld-cases/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jerome group were rivals to Modack’s</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jerome, like Modack, is also an accused in a criminal case involving murder – he faces charges in connection with the </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-01-10-charges-against-murdered-steroid-king-reveal-a-global-web-of-crime-cases/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2017 killing of steroid smuggler Brian Wainstein</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That trial is yet to commence.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Joel does not face criminal charges like his father, he is, based on his TikTok account, also clearly involved in the entertainment establishment industry in Cape Town.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And now, like his father who has been wounded in shootings several times, he has also been hit by a bullet or bullets.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Targeted</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Friday’s shooting appeared to be the second attempt on his life – in an incident at the end of March, Joel’s </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-04-05-spate-of-shootings-in-cape-town-linked-to-political-gang-and-construction-mafia-elements/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vehicle was shot</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> near the suburb of Belhar but he was not hurt.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The March incident happened as other shootings played out around Cape Town – </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> previously reported that in one incident in mid-March Simon Stanfield, the cousin of alleged 28s gang boss Ralph Stanfield, was </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-04-05-spate-of-shootings-in-cape-town-linked-to-political-gang-and-construction-mafia-elements/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">murdered in the suburb of Delft</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Friday, after Joel was wounded in the Green Point shooting, he apparently ran into a shopping centre.</span>\r\n\r\n \r\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\r\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">One person shot in the the leg ran inside the centre <a href=\"https://t.co/0txwFm3uo6\">pic.twitter.com/0txwFm3uo6</a></p>\r\n— ?Tanswell - Proud ?️? (Photo: Screengrab Twitter)</em></p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Police spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk, without naming Joel, told </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick </span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that the shooting happened around 12.30pm.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Preliminary reports indicate that unknown gunmen opened fire at an adult male, wounding him,” Van Wyk said.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“At arrival on the scene the members were informed that the victim was already taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An attempted murder case was being investigated.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Friday afternoon, Van Wyk said, crime scene experts were “still on the scene combing the area for clues”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jerome </span><a href=\"https://www.news24.com/news24/southafrica/news/watch-son-of-alleged-cape-town-gang-boss-shot-wounded-20230505\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">told </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">News24</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it appeared Joel would recover.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Assassinations</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several years ago, in 2012, a Hawks investigator alleged during a court case in Cape Town that Jerome was </span><a href=\"https://www.pressreader.com/south-africa/pretoria-news/20120111/281642482038874\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a suspect in the 2011 murder</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of nightclub security kingpin and rumoured intelligence agent </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2020-11-27-hit-on-a-hitman-how-the-ernest-solomon-murder-may-affect-two-unsolved-underworld-killings/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cyril Beeka</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nothing came of that claim.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, other shootings have been linked to the Brian Wainstein murder case, in which Jerome is an accused.</span>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> previously reported that in October 2022 another suspect in the case, </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-10-20-3-accused-in-murder-of-steroid-king-brian-wainstein-killed-whos-next/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anthony “Amier” van der Watt, was shot dead</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Cape Town suburb of Retreat.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In March 2021 another accused, Jason Maits, was gunned down outside his house in Mitchells Plain.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the month before that, in February 2021, </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-02-03-underworld-suspect-shot-dead-one-week-before-scheduled-court-appearance-in-cape-town-for-murder/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">William “Red” Stevens</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, reputed to have been one of the most seasoned 27s gangsters in the Western Cape, was murdered in a shooting at his home in the Cape Town suburb of Kraaifontein. </span><b>DM</b>",

"description": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within a few hours in Cape Town one of the most high-profile organised crime cases that is developing in the city inched ahead in a courtroom – and nearby, in a separate incident, a shooting took place.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two matters, though, have some indirect overlaps.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Friday 5 May alleged underworld kingpin </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-05-05-nafiz-modack-facing-over-3000-criminal-charges-says-he-will-apply-for-bail/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nafiz Modack appeared in the Western Cape High Court</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to face more than 3,100 charges along with 14 co-accused.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They face counts including murder, attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, extortion, money laundering and abduction.</span>\r\n<h4><b>A court case and a shooting</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the charges are linked to </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-11-19-we-were-lied-to-the-fiasco-of-top-secret-ipid-report-into-the-assassination-of-senior-cop-charl-kinnear/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the assassination of Lieutenant-Colonel Charl Kinnear</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who was shot outside his Bishop Lavis home in Cape Town on 18 September 2020.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the time, Kinnear had been investigating individuals including </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-06-24-killing-charl-kinnear-could-collapse-critical-cop-gun-corruption-cases/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Modack, as well as fellow police officers</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The high-profile Modack criminal case, in which the state has accused Modack of heading a criminal organisation known as the “</span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-05-01-murder-extortion-and-corruption-nafiz-modack-and-co-accused-back-in-court-on-friday/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Modack Enterprise</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">” was postponed from Friday to next month for pre-trial proceedings to continue.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, on the same day that Modack and his co-accused appeared in the Western Cape High Court, Joel Booysen, the son of Jerome “Donkie” Booysen, was wounded in a shooting in Green Point.</span>\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_1679830\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"720\"]<img class=\"size-full wp-image-1679830\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Caryn-Shootings-organised-crime-Cape-07.05.2023.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"452\" /> Joel Booysen. (Photo: TikTok)[/caption]\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Western Cape High Court is roughly 1.4 kilometres from the area where Joel was shot.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Members of his family have been on police radar in the past.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a previous court case, a cop alleged Jerome was </span><a href=\"https://www.pressreader.com/south-africa/pretoria-news/20120111/281642482038874\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the head of the Sexy Boys gang</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while in another case he was accused of </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-02-18-two-court-cases-start-unravelling-the-tangled-web-of-cape-towns-criminal-underworld/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mandrax dealing</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jerome’s brother (Joel’s uncle) Colin Booysen was previously an accused in an extortion-related case with Modack but that case ended with their acquittals.</span>\r\n<h4><b>AKA, plus ‘bottles and ballers’</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Joel’s TikTok account, he had known </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-02-14-police-tight-lipped-on-rapper-aka-murder-probe-as-father-reveals-plans-for-dignified-send-off/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rapper Kiernan Forbes, also known as AKA, who was murdered</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a shooting outside a Durban restaurant in February.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a post about Forbes’s killing, Joel had posted: “never dreamt the day would come when I’d have to say Goodbye to you FOREVER ?❤ Forever In My Heart Cuz.”</span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://www.tiktok.com/@joelbooysen_cpt/video/7198923677981805830?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc&web_id=7229728704174884357\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">https://www.tiktok.com/@joelbooysen_cpt/video/7198923677981805830?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc&web_id=7229728704174884357</span></i></a>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to his TikTok account, Joel was the owner of Jet Lounge, as well as the establishment </span><a href=\"https://www.instagram.com/sneaker_cartel_sa/?hl=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sneaker Cartel</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, situated in Cape Town’s iconic Long Street, and which is described on its Instagram page as “The city’s home of bottles and ballers.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nightclub security linked to Long Street has previously been a source of underworld tensions in Cape Town.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Read on Daily Maverick: </b><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2019-06-27-the-enforcers-inside-cape-towns-deadly-nightclub-battles/\"><b>The Enforcers – Inside Cape Town’s Deadly Nightclub Battles</b></a>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This loops back to his father – Jerome’s name previously cropped up in nightclub security issues.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Nightclubs, security and steroids</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to what previously surfaced in other Cape Town court cases, there were two groups tussling for control of security initially focused on the city – on the one side was Modack and a group of men, and on the other side, a group including </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-05-15-making-sense-of-cape-towns-confusing-rush-of-underworld-cases/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mark Lifman and Jerome Booysen</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_841268\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"720\"]<img class=\"size-full wp-image-841268\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/Caryn-booysen-option-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"360\" /> Jerome ‘Donkie’ Booysen leaves the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court on 22 December 2020. (Photo: Adrian de Kock)[/caption]\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a previous court case relating to Modack, police had alleged the Lifman and </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-05-15-making-sense-of-cape-towns-confusing-rush-of-underworld-cases/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jerome group were rivals to Modack’s</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jerome, like Modack, is also an accused in a criminal case involving murder – he faces charges in connection with the </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-01-10-charges-against-murdered-steroid-king-reveal-a-global-web-of-crime-cases/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2017 killing of steroid smuggler Brian Wainstein</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That trial is yet to commence.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Joel does not face criminal charges like his father, he is, based on his TikTok account, also clearly involved in the entertainment establishment industry in Cape Town.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And now, like his father who has been wounded in shootings several times, he has also been hit by a bullet or bullets.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Targeted</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Friday’s shooting appeared to be the second attempt on his life – in an incident at the end of March, Joel’s </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-04-05-spate-of-shootings-in-cape-town-linked-to-political-gang-and-construction-mafia-elements/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vehicle was shot</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> near the suburb of Belhar but he was not hurt.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The March incident happened as other shootings played out around Cape Town – </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> previously reported that in one incident in mid-March Simon Stanfield, the cousin of alleged 28s gang boss Ralph Stanfield, was </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-04-05-spate-of-shootings-in-cape-town-linked-to-political-gang-and-construction-mafia-elements/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">murdered in the suburb of Delft</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Friday, after Joel was wounded in the Green Point shooting, he apparently ran into a shopping centre.</span>\r\n\r\n \r\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\r\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">One person shot in the the leg ran inside the centre <a href=\"https://t.co/0txwFm3uo6\">pic.twitter.com/0txwFm3uo6</a></p>\r\n— ?Tanswell - Proud ?️? (Photo: Screengrab Twitter)</em>[/caption]\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Police spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk, without naming Joel, told </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick </span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that the shooting happened around 12.30pm.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Preliminary reports indicate that unknown gunmen opened fire at an adult male, wounding him,” Van Wyk said.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“At arrival on the scene the members were informed that the victim was already taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An attempted murder case was being investigated.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Friday afternoon, Van Wyk said, crime scene experts were “still on the scene combing the area for clues”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jerome </span><a href=\"https://www.news24.com/news24/southafrica/news/watch-son-of-alleged-cape-town-gang-boss-shot-wounded-20230505\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">told </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">News24</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it appeared Joel would recover.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Assassinations</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several years ago, in 2012, a Hawks investigator alleged during a court case in Cape Town that Jerome was </span><a href=\"https://www.pressreader.com/south-africa/pretoria-news/20120111/281642482038874\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a suspect in the 2011 murder</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of nightclub security kingpin and rumoured intelligence agent </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2020-11-27-hit-on-a-hitman-how-the-ernest-solomon-murder-may-affect-two-unsolved-underworld-killings/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cyril Beeka</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nothing came of that claim.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, other shootings have been linked to the Brian Wainstein murder case, in which Jerome is an accused.</span>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> previously reported that in October 2022 another suspect in the case, </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-10-20-3-accused-in-murder-of-steroid-king-brian-wainstein-killed-whos-next/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anthony “Amier” van der Watt, was shot dead</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Cape Town suburb of Retreat.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In March 2021 another accused, Jason Maits, was gunned down outside his house in Mitchells Plain.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the month before that, in February 2021, </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-02-03-underworld-suspect-shot-dead-one-week-before-scheduled-court-appearance-in-cape-town-for-murder/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">William “Red” Stevens</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, reputed to have been one of the most seasoned 27s gangsters in the Western Cape, was murdered in a shooting at his home in the Cape Town suburb of Kraaifontein. </span><b>DM</b>",
