"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The year began with a mass shooting. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From there, South Africa’s crime situation developed.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Murders were committed at homes, construction sites and on pavements.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Key arrests were carried out — and some are still pending.</span>\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1985499\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/SAs-crime-calendar-2023.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"1883\" />\r\n<h4><b>Massacre at a birthday party</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 2023 crime timeline started on an ominous note.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 29 January, two gunmen entered a home in KwaZakhele in the Eastern Cape. According to a government statement, the gunmen “</span><a href=\"https://www.gov.za/news/media-advisories/government-activities/minister-bheki-cele-leads-delegation-crime-scene-mass\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">randomly shot at guests</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who were attending a birthday party”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eight people were killed and three wounded.</span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The </span><a href=\"https://edition.cnn.com/2023/01/30/africa/birthday-party-shooting-south-africa-intl/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mass shooting</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> made news headlines in </span><a href=\"https://www.thehindu.com/news/international/eight-killed-in-mass-shooting-at-birthday-party-in-south-africa/article66450248.ece\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">various countries</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. (Photo: Gallo Images / Brenton Geach)</em></p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The following month more violence rocked Cape Town — in March there was a </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-03-27-mass-shooting-in-khayelitsha-leaves-four-dead-five-injured/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mass shooting in Khayelitsha</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in which four men were killed and another five people wounded.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Read more in Daily Maverick:</b> <a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-11-27-boko-haram-vs-guptas-judgment-reveals-extensive-network-around-cape-town-extortion-gangs/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boko Haram vs Guptas – judgment reveals extensive network around Cape Town extortion gangs</span></a>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was not clear what sparked the incident.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In April, there was a massacre in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, in which </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-04-21-gunmen-kill-10-people-in-ambush-on-family-at-pietermaritzburg-homestead/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gunmen killed 10 people</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after storming a house.</span>\r\n\r\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1f6rplmV-I\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A police statement said: “During the ambush, </span><a href=\"https://www.saps.gov.za/newsroom/selnewsdetails.php?nid=45774\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10 members of the same family were fatally wounded</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The youngest of the victims was a 13-year-old boy. Hours after the attack at the family home, a police manhunt ensued for the suspects responsible for the deadly shooting.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Less than two kilometres away, a shootout ensued when police confronted four men participating in a ‘cleansing ceremony’ conducted by a traditional healer.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At that stage, two suspects were arrested, one escaped and a fourth was killed in a shootout with police.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1985555\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/ED_447309.jpg\" alt=\"year of the bullet\" width=\"720\" height=\"388\" /> <em>Hundreds of people attended the memorial service of activist Loyiso Nkohla Mabandla (40) at Mew Way Hall in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, on 25 April 2023. (Photo: Gallo Images / Brenton Geach)</em></p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In yet another shooting in April, </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-04-20-loyiso-nkohla-a-life-of-activism-cut-short-by-a-hail-of-bullets/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">activist Loyiso Nkohla was murdered at Philippi</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Cape Town while attending a community meeting.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arrests were made in that case. </span>\r\n<h4><b>Bulgaria and Constantia connections</b></h4>\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1985552\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/ED_452559.jpg\" alt=\"year of the bullet mass shootings\" width=\"720\" height=\"384\" /> <em>Crime scene experts process a multiple murder scene in Constantia, Cape Town on 25 May 2023 where killers targeted Bulgarians Krasimir Kamenov, his wife Gergana and two of their employees. All four were originally from Bulgaria and were shot in the Kamenovs’ home in the upmarket suburb of Constantia in Cape Town.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Read more in Daily Maverick:</b> <a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-05-30-constantia-killings-bulgarias-forewarning-to-sa-and-a-global-billion-dollar-crypto-scam/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Constantia killings – Bulgaria’s forewarning to SA and a global billion-dollar crypto scam</span></a>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kamenov was wanted in Bulgaria for crimes including murder and extortion. He had been accused of being involved in the killing of a former policeman, Lyubomir Ivanov, who was shot in the Bulgarian capital, Sofia, in March 2022.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His name was also mentioned in connection with State Capture-style plots in Bulgaria.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No arrests were made in the Constantia killings and the case is still open.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Gang suspicions</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That same month, violence flared again in Cape Town.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joel Booysen, a son of Jerome “Donkie” Booysen, who faces drug- and murder-related charges in developing court cases, was </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-05-07-the-wild-wild-cape-shooting-of-a-rivals-son-plus-nafiz-modack-enterprises-3000-charges/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wounded in a shooting in Green Point</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a previous court case, Jerome Booysen was alleged to be the head of the Sexy Boys gang, while in a subsequent case, he was </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-02-18-two-court-cases-start-unravelling-the-tangled-web-of-cape-towns-criminal-underworld/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">accused of Mandrax dealing</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The month after Joel Booysen was shot, </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-06-11-dangerous-deja-vu-another-friday-another-gang-shooting-as-organised-crime-grips-cape-town/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other relatives of Jerome Booysen were targeted</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while in a vehicle on Robert Sobukwe Road, in Cape Town’s northern suburbs, on 9 June.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High-calibre firearms were apparently used in that shooting.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In another part of the country, yet another mass shooting unfolded in June.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This time, </span><a href=\"about:blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eight people were killed while drinking beer in a room in Glebelands</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a notorious hostel in Umlazi, south of Durban.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The massacres did not end there.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Drugs and heists</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In July, seven people were killed in a mass shooting in Kwanobuhle in the Eastern Cape.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Police said it was </span><a href=\"https://www.saps.gov.za/newsroom/selnewsdetails.php?nid=47787\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">suspected the shootings were linked to a drug matter</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The following month, drugs surfaced as a reason behind another shooting.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three EFF members in Cape Town were fatally shot in Mfuleni after it emerged that they were involved in plans to demolish a drug dealer’s house.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Read more in Daily Maverick:</b> <a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-08-30-three-eff-members-shot-dead-in-cape-town-in-alleged-hit-by-suspected-drug-dealer/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three EFF members shot dead in Cape Town in alleged hit by suspected drug dealer</span></a>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shootings pushed on into September.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the start of the month, the South African Police Service announced that, at a house in Limpopo, the police had killed 18 suspects who were planning a cash-in-transit heist.</span>\r\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\r\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\"><a href=\"https://twitter.com/hashtag/sapsHQ?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#sapsHQ</a> [READ] Police move in swiftly to foil a cash-in-transit heist, 18 suspected <a href=\"https://twitter.com/hashtag/CIT?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#CIT</a> robbers killed during a shootout with police. 10 Vehicles including several high powered performance vehicles and 7 automatic rifles have been seized.<a href=\"https://twitter.com/hashtag/CITRobberies?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#CITRobberies</a> <a href=\"https://twitter.com/hashtag/TrioCrimes?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#TrioCrimes</a> ME… <a href=\"https://t.co/5pkNGXz7Z8\">pic.twitter.com/5pkNGXz7Z8</a></p>\r\n— SA Police Service ?? Sixteen males and two females were declared dead at the scene.”</span>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eyewitness News</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reported that </span><a href=\"https://ewn.co.za/2023/09/03/limpopo-shootout-death-toll-rises-to-19-officer-loses-leg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a nineteenth body</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was subsequently found at the scene.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Cape Town, meanwhile, there were major crime-related developments in September.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Detained</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During that month, alleged 28s gang boss </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-09-29-alleged-28s-boss-ralph-stanfield-and-his-wife-arrested-in-cape-town-crackdown/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ralph Stanfield and his wife Nicole Johnson were arrested</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Constantia on charges including fraud and vehicle theft.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their unsuccessful bail application resulted in detailed allegations about gangsterism surfacing.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stanfield and Johnson had faced accusations relating to other issues, including the running of the entertainment venue Ayepyep Lifestyle Lounge in Cape Town.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Read more in Daily Maverick:</b> <a in August after accusations by its former co-owner, Kagiso Setsetse, that Stanfield and Johnson, its general manager, were trying to take it over. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The venue, now co-owned by Johnson’s mother, Barbara Johnson, </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-09-21-legal-settlement-cape-town-luxury-venue-ayepyep-to-reopen-after-gang-and-extortion-accusations-spat/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reopened in September</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shortly before the pair was arrested.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Read more in Daily Maverick:</b> <a Stanfield’s name surfaced in a fraud and corruption investigation relating to Malusi Booi, who in March was fired from the post of mayoral committee member for human settlements after his City of Cape Town office was raided.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In October, a month after Stanfield and Johnson were taken into custody, </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-10-31-ex-cape-town-mayco-member-malusi-booi-quits-as-councillor/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Booi resigned as a councillor</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and said he wanted to get on with his life and clear his name.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Organised crime continued in Cape Town.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Targeted</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 4 October, Shafiq Naser, originally from Israel, was assassinated while driving in the suburb of Milnerton.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The shooting, which involved a gunman on a motorbike, appeared to have been carefully planned.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: Stanfield, whose cousin Noor Stanfield Stephanus (or simply Noor Stephanus) was </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-11-06-another-cousin-of-alleged-28s-gang-boss-ralph-stanfield-murdered-this-time-while-stanfield-in-custody/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">killed in a shooting</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the suburb of Valhalla Park on 4 November.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parts of Valhalla Park are strongholds of the 28s gang.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Firing lines</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another shooting rocked Cape Town in December.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lulama Dinginto, the </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-12-11-cape-town-crimefighter-lulama-dinginto-shot-dead-in-her-gugulethu-home/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deputy chairperson of the Gugulethu Community Policing Forum, was murdered</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in her home during the early hours of 10 December.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A suspect was arrested.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barely a week later, nine people were murdered on the evening of 16 December in Boitekong outside Rustenburg.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A </span><a href=\"https://www.saps.gov.za/newsroom/selnewsdetails.php?nid=50316\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">police statement</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said: “According to information available at this stage, a group of mainly Xhosa-speaking individuals were sitting in a yard drinking liquor when an unconfirmed number of Sesotho-speaking suspects opened fire on them.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“The motive is yet to be determined and no one has been arrested at this stage. Investigations into the matter continue.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eight people died at the scene and a ninth died in hospital.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While all these violent incidents are simply a snapshot of crime in South Africa, it means a massacre in January marked the start of the year, several other mass shootings and targeted killings happened during the year, and another mass shooting marked the end of it. </span><b>DM</b>",

According to a government statement, the gunmen “</span><a href=\"https://www.gov.za/news/media-advisories/government-activities/minister-bheki-cele-leads-delegation-crime-scene-mass\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">randomly shot at guests</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who were attending a birthday party”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eight people were killed and three wounded.</span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The </span><a href=\"https://edition.cnn.com/2023/01/30/africa/birthday-party-shooting-south-africa-intl/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mass shooting</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> made news headlines in </span><a href=\"https://www.thehindu.com/news/international/eight-killed-in-mass-shooting-at-birthday-party-in-south-africa/article66450248.ece\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">various countries</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The youngest of the victims was a 13-year-old boy. All four were originally from Bulgaria and were shot in the Kamenovs’ home in the upmarket suburb of Constantia in Cape Town.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Read more in Daily Maverick:</b> <a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-05-30-constantia-killings-bulgarias-forewarning-to-sa-and-a-global-billion-dollar-crypto-scam/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Constantia killings – Bulgaria’s forewarning to SA and a global billion-dollar crypto scam</span></a>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kamenov was wanted in Bulgaria for crimes including murder and extortion. He had been accused of being involved in the killing of a former policeman, Lyubomir Ivanov, who was shot in the Bulgarian capital, Sofia, in March 2022.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His name was also mentioned in connection with State Capture-style plots in Bulgaria.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No arrests were made in the Constantia killings and the case is still open.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Gang suspicions</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That same month, violence flared again in Cape Town.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joel Booysen, a son of Jerome “Donkie” Booysen, who faces drug- and murder-related charges in developing court cases, was </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-05-07-the-wild-wild-cape-shooting-of-a-rivals-son-plus-nafiz-modack-enterprises-3000-charges/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wounded in a shooting in Green Point</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a previous court case, Jerome Booysen was alleged to be the head of the Sexy Boys gang, while in a subsequent case, he was </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-02-18-two-court-cases-start-unravelling-the-tangled-web-of-cape-towns-criminal-underworld/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">accused of Mandrax dealing</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The month after Joel Booysen was shot, </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-06-11-dangerous-deja-vu-another-friday-another-gang-shooting-as-organised-crime-grips-cape-town/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other relatives of Jerome Booysen were targeted</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while in a vehicle on Robert Sobukwe Road, in Cape Town’s northern suburbs, on 9 June.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High-calibre firearms were apparently used in that shooting.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In another part of the country, yet another mass shooting unfolded in June.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This time, </span><a href=\"about:blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eight people were killed while drinking beer in a room in Glebelands</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a notorious hostel in Umlazi, south of Durban.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The massacres did not end there.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Drugs and heists</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In July, seven people were killed in a mass shooting in Kwanobuhle in the Eastern Cape.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Police said it was </span><a href=\"https://www.saps.gov.za/newsroom/selnewsdetails.php?nid=47787\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">suspected the shootings were linked to a drug matter</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The following month, drugs surfaced as a reason behind another shooting.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three EFF members in Cape Town were fatally shot in Mfuleni after it emerged that they were involved in plans to demolish a drug dealer’s house.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Read more in Daily Maverick:</b> <a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-08-30-three-eff-members-shot-dead-in-cape-town-in-alleged-hit-by-suspected-drug-dealer/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three EFF members shot dead in Cape Town in alleged hit by suspected drug dealer</span></a>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shootings pushed on into September.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the start of the month, the South African Police Service announced that, at a house in Limpopo, the police had killed 18 suspects who were planning a cash-in-transit heist.</span>\r\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\r\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\"><a href=\"https://twitter.com/hashtag/sapsHQ?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#sapsHQ</a> [READ] Police move in swiftly to foil a cash-in-transit heist, 18 suspected <a href=\"https://twitter.com/hashtag/CIT?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#CIT</a> robbers killed during a shootout with police. 10 Vehicles including several high powered performance vehicles and 7 automatic rifles have been seized.<a href=\"https://twitter.com/hashtag/CITRobberies?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#CITRobberies</a> <a href=\"https://twitter.com/hashtag/TrioCrimes?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#TrioCrimes</a> ME… <a href=\"https://t.co/5pkNGXz7Z8\">pic.twitter.com/5pkNGXz7Z8</a></p>\r\n— SA Police Service ?? subsequently found at the scene.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Cape Town, meanwhile, there were major crime-related developments in September.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Detained</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During that month, alleged 28s gang boss </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-09-29-alleged-28s-boss-ralph-stanfield-and-his-wife-arrested-in-cape-town-crackdown/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ralph Stanfield and his wife Nicole Johnson were arrested</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Constantia on charges including fraud and vehicle theft.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their unsuccessful bail application resulted in detailed allegations about gangsterism surfacing.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stanfield and Johnson had faced accusations relating to other issues, including the running of the entertainment venue Ayepyep Lifestyle Lounge in Cape Town.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Read more in Daily Maverick:</b> <a in August after accusations by its former co-owner, Kagiso Setsetse, that Stanfield and Johnson, its general manager, were trying to take it over. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The venue, now co-owned by Johnson’s mother, Barbara Johnson, </span><a Stanfield’s name surfaced in a fraud and corruption investigation relating to Malusi Booi, who in March was fired from the post of mayoral committee member for human settlements after his City of Cape Town office was raided.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In October, a month after Stanfield and Johnson were taken into custody, </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-10-31-ex-cape-town-mayco-member-malusi-booi-quits-as-councillor/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Booi resigned as a councillor</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and said he wanted to get on with his life and clear his name.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Organised crime continued in Cape Town.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Targeted</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 4 October, Shafiq Naser, originally from Israel, was assassinated while driving in the suburb of Milnerton.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The shooting, which involved a gunman on a motorbike, appeared to have been carefully planned.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naser was involved in the construction, luxury vehicle and property industries in Cape Town.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Read more in Daily Maverick:</b> <a to gunman killed outside city restaurant last year</span></a>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was not clear why Naser was shot, although it turned out he may have been the cousin of Abdel Fattah Nassar, who was shot dead in Cape Town in October 2022.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nassar was killed after he had fired shots outside a venue in Granger Bay and was fatally wounded when security returned fire.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Violence pressed on into November.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Cape Town, it looped back to Stanfield, whose cousin Noor Stanfield Stephanus (or simply Noor Stephanus) was </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-11-06-another-cousin-of-alleged-28s-gang-boss-ralph-stanfield-murdered-this-time-while-stanfield-in-custody/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">killed in a shooting</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the suburb of Valhalla Park on 4 November.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parts of Valhalla Park are strongholds of the 28s gang.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Firing lines</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another shooting rocked Cape Town in December.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lulama Dinginto, the </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-12-11-cape-town-crimefighter-lulama-dinginto-shot-dead-in-her-gugulethu-home/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deputy chairperson of the Gugulethu Community Policing Forum, was murdered</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in her home during the early hours of 10 December.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A suspect was arrested.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barely a week later, nine people were murdered on the evening of 16 December in Boitekong outside Rustenburg.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A </span><a href=\"https://www.saps.gov.za/newsroom/selnewsdetails.php?nid=50316\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">police statement</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said: “According to information available at this stage, a group of mainly Xhosa-speaking individuals were sitting in a yard drinking liquor when an unconfirmed number of Sesotho-speaking suspects opened fire on them.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“The motive is yet to be determined and no one has been arrested at this stage. Investigations into the matter continue.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eight people died at the scene and a ninth died in hospital.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While all these violent incidents are simply a snapshot of crime in South Africa, it means a massacre in January marked the start of the year, several other mass shootings and targeted killings happened during the year, and another mass shooting marked the end of it. </span><b>DM</b>",
