"contents": "<b>Monday, 27 June is Micro-, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) Day. </b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The observance is intended to raise awareness of the contribution of MSMEs to sustainable development.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MSMEs constitute 90% of businesses worldwide, and account for 60% to 70% of employment and 50% of GDP, according to the United Nations.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“As the backbone of societies everywhere, they contribute to local and national economies and to sustaining livelihoods, in particular among the working poor, women, youth, and groups in vulnerable situations,” according to the UN’s information page on the event.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“MSMEs have to become more resilient to future shocks, and efforts and stimulus packages must target those most heavily affected by disruptions to global supply chains, rising inflation and the continuing ramifications of the Covid-19 pandemic.”</span>\r\n\r\n<b>On Monday, at 12pm</b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the 11th annual State of Civil Society Report is being launched by global civil society alliance CIVICUS. The report reflects a “time of immense upheaval and contestation”, the alliance says.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Russia’s illegal war on Ukraine has directly blighted the lives of millions but is also sending echoes of disruption around the world, as soaring food and fuel prices pile further misery on communities already hit hard by the impacts of the pandemic and extreme weather caused by climate change.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There were, however, many mobilisations for change around the world, including mass protests, campaigns and people’s movements for justice.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Five key trends identified in the report:</span>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>The rising cost of fuel and food is spurring public anger about and protests over economic mismanagement;</li>\r\n \t<li>Democracy is under assault but positive changes are still being won;</li>\r\n \t<li>Advances are being made in fighting social inequality despite attacks;</li>\r\n \t<li>Civil society is keeping up the pressure for climate action; and</li>\r\n \t<li>Current crises are exposing the inadequacies of the international governance system.</li>\r\n</ul>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read the report </span><a href=\"https://www.civicus.org/documents/reports-and-publications/SOCS/2022/CIVICUS2022SOCSReport.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Wednesday, 29 June is International Day of the Tropics,</b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which highlights the diversity of the tropics while drawing attention to the unique challenges and opportunities nations in this region face.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“The tropics are a region of the Earth, roughly defined as the area between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn,” according to the UN. “Although topography and other factors contribute to climatic variation, tropical locations are typically warm and experience little seasonal change in day-to-day temperature.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rain tends to be prevalent in the inner regions near the equator, with the seasonality of rain increasing with distance from the equator.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Challenges identified </span><a href=\"https://www.un.org/en/observances/tropics-day\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the tropics</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:</span>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>By 2050, the region will host most of the world's people and two-thirds of its children;</li>\r\n \t<li>There are higher levels of poverty in the tropics, with more people experiencing undernourishment in this region than in the rest of the world; and</li>\r\n \t<li>The proportion of the urban population living in slums is higher in this region than in the rest of the world.</li>\r\n</ul>\r\n<b>Wednesday </b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is the start of the LANDac International Conference 2022 in Utrecht, the Netherlands. Public patience is wearing thin,” says the event description.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The keynote address will be delivered by Advocate Anton du Plessis, the deputy national director of public prosecutions. The speakers include advocate Wilbert Mandinde, programmes coordinator for the Zimbabwe NGO Forum; human rights activist Tiseke Kasambala; and S’bu Zikode, president of Abahlali baseMjondolo.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>On Friday, 1 July at 9am, </b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Defend Our Democracy Campaign’s Conference for Democratic Renewal and Change begins.
