"contents": "Tuesday, 25 May is set aside to celebrate the formation of the African Union’s predecessor, the Organisation of African Unity, in 1963. Since then, Africa Day has become about so much more than one organisation. Civil society has marked the day with various events to highlight the common challenges and victories of African countries.\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-928260\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/MC-CSWatch-24May_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"768\" /> (Photo: journeysbydesign.com/Wikipedia)</p>\r\n\r\nThis year, the African Union will mark the day by launching the long-anticipated Charter for African Cultural Renaissance. The charter focuses on:\r\n<ol>\r\n \t<li>“Promotion of African identity, shared values, the spirit of Pan-Africanism and African Renaissance;</li>\r\n \t<li>Development of the creative economy of the continent;</li>\r\n \t<li>Protection and conservation of African World Heritage Sites and increasing of African sites in the World Heritage List; and</li>\r\n \t<li>Development and continued dissemination of regional and continental programs for the promotion of African identity, shared values, cultural and creative industries and heritage.”</li>\r\n</ol>\r\nThe virtual launch will include addresses by leaders of the African Union. South African activist and human rights lawyer Fatima Hassan will be in discussion with people including former New Zealand prime minister Helen Clark — the co-chair of the Independent Panel for Pandemic Preparedness and Response, and Dr Rowan Williams, the chair of Christian Aid Board and former Archbishop of Canterbury.
