"description": "Daily Maverick is an independent online news publication and weekly print newspaper in South Africa.\r\n\r\nIt is known for breaking some of the defining stories of South Africa in the past decade, including the Marikana Massacre, in which the South African Police Service killed 34 miners in August 2012.\r\n\r\nIt also investigated the Gupta Leaks, which won the 2019 Global Shining Light Award.\r\n\r\nThat investigation was credited with exposing the Indian-born Gupta family and former President Jacob Zuma for their role in the systemic political corruption referred to as state capture.\r\n\r\nIn 2018, co-founder and editor-in-chief Branislav ‘Branko’ Brkic was awarded the country’s prestigious Nat Nakasa Award, recognised for initiating the investigative collaboration after receiving the hard drive that included the email tranche.\r\n\r\nIn 2021, co-founder and CEO Styli Charalambous also received the award.\r\n\r\nDaily Maverick covers the latest political and news developments in South Africa with breaking news updates, analysis, opinions and more.",

The photos are ordered in exactly the time sequence they were taken: 17, 18 and 20 August 2020. The ones on the left and right were taken by Thamsanqa Mbovane and the middle one was supplied to him.\r\n\r\nOn 20 January 2020, GroundUp published a<a href=\"https://www.groundup.org.za/article/fifteen-year-wait-kwanobuhle-bridge-finally-over/\"> story</a> about the end of a 15-year wait by residents and learners in KwaNobuhle, Uitenhage for a bridge across this river. She said the contractors were two local businesses and the bridge was completed during the Covid-19 lockdown.\r\n\r\nOne resident said: “My RDP house is worth more than this bridge. It is like a stoep.”\r\n\r\nHere’s the new bridge as photographed on 17 August 2020 (the left photo in the collage at the top of the article). Notice that it has no rails.\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-702376 size-full\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/GroundUp-Bridge3-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" /> (Photo: GroundUp)</p>\r\n\r\nThe day we published (18 August 2020), the municipality put up the rails. Professional boxer Nicolus Sigili alerted us to the rails because he crosses the bridge to and from gym every day.\r\n\r\nYou can see the rails being built below in a photo supplied to us:\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-702378 size-full\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/GroundUp-Bridge4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"622\" height=\"471\" /> (Photo: GroundUp)</p>\r\n\r\nThis is the finished product :\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-702379 size-full\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/GroundUp-Bridge5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"619\" height=\"426\" /> (Photo: GroundUp)</p>\r\n\r\nThen the bridge was vandalised:\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-702380 size-full\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/GroundUp-Bridge6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"501\" /> (Photo: GroundUp)</p>\r\n\r\nSome time after the above photo was taken, the rail lying in the river was stolen.\r\n\r\nAlerted to the theft of the rails, a shocked Councillor Daaminds said: “No ways!” Ward 44 Councillor Nomsa Booi (ANC) confirmed the rails had been stolen. “We build, but the people destroy what is rightfully theirs. We condemn the looting of the rails in the strongest terms.”\r\n\r\nAnd here’s what the bridge currently looks like (below). <b>DM</b>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-702382 size-full\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/GroundUp-Bridge7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2304\" height=\"1536\" /> (Photo: GroundUp)</p>\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" style=\"display: none; width: 1px;\" src=\"https://thirdpartyhits.groundup.org.za/counter/hit/dailymaverick/2020-08-26-can-you-guess-order-these-photos-were-taken\" alt=\"\" />",
