The remaining board members, most of whom he had recently appointed, then voted to make Trump the centre’s chairperson. The board also fired Deborah Rutter, who had served as the centre’s </span><a href=\"https://www.npr.org/2025/02/14/nx-s1-5296904/former-kennedy-center-president-speaks-out-in-first-interview-since-her-firing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">president since 2014</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and already </span><a href=\"https://www.kennedy-center.org/news-room/press-release-landing-page/kennedy-center-president-deborah-rutter-to-step-down/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">planned to step down seven months later</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The board </span><a href=\"https://theviolinchannel.com/ric-grenell-appointed-as-interim-executive-director-of-the-kennedy-center-deborah-f-rutters-contract-terminated/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">replaced Rutter with Richard Grenell</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who served in the first Trump administration.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Conversation US asked </span><a href=\"https://eandrewtaylor.art/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">E Andrew Taylor</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an arts management scholar, to explain how the Kennedy Center operates and sum up the significance of Trump’s unprecedented interference with its operations.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Why is the government involved in the Kennedy Center?</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Kennedy Center, a unique cultural enterprise located along the Potomac River in Washington, has a complex ownership and operating structure. The campus includes three large performance halls, two midsize theatres and many smaller venues and public spaces that host musical, theatrical and dance performances, lectures, exhibits and other special events. In form and function, it looks a lot like other major metropolitan performing arts centres, such as </span><a href=\"https://www.lincolncenter.org/home\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York City’s Lincoln Center</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But its structure is different.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Kennedy Center is part of the federal government. Officially, it’s a bureau under the </span><a href=\"https://uscode.house.gov/view.xhtml?hl=false&edition=2023&req=granuleid%3AUSC-2018-title20-chapter3-subchapter5&num=0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smithsonian Institution</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was originally conceived during the Eisenhower administration and later championed by President John F Kennedy. It was </span><a href=\"https://www.kennedy-center.org/globalassets/our-story/mission/kennedy-center-fy25-budget-justification-to-congress.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">named after JFK following his assassination</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The centre </span><a href=\"https://dcist.com/story/21/08/26/kennedy-center-50-years-facts-history/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opened in 1971</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with a world premiere of composer Leonard Bernstein’s Mass. </span><a href=\"https://time.com/7221538/donald-trump-kennedy-center/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">President Richard Nixon did not attend</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after the FBI warned him of possible anti-war messages encoded in the Latin text that might be designed to embarrass him.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The centre’s </span><a href=\"https://www.kennedy-center.org/our-story/mission/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">current mission statement</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> captures its purpose and goals:</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“As the nation’s cultural centre, and a living memorial to President John F Kennedy, we are a leader for the arts across America and around the world, reaching and connecting with artists, inspiring and educating communities. (Photo: EPA - EFE / Jim lo Scalzo)</em></p>\r\n<h4><b>Why does the Kennedy Center have a nonprofit board?</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From the start, the Kennedy Center was </span><a href=\"https://uscode.house.gov/statutes/pl/85/874.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">planned as a public-private effort</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Government funding </span><a href=\"https://uscode.house.gov/view.xhtml?hl=false&edition=2023&req=granuleid%3AUSC-2018-title20-chapter3-subchapter5&num=0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">covers the maintenance, upkeep</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, security and restoration of the building and grounds.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Private funds, largely derived from ticket sales, individual donors, foundations and corporations, cover the performances, productions and other programmes.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those private funds cover more than three-quarters of the </span><a href=\"https://www.kennedy-center.org/globalassets/our-story/mission/kennedy-center-fy25-budget-justification-to-congress.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">centre’s budget</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Its </span><a href=\"https://www.kennedy-center.org/news-room/annual-report/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2023 annual report</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> explained that its $286-million in revenue included $152-million from ticket sales, services and fees, $85-million from donations and $45-million from the federal government, with the rest derived from income from its endowment and other sources.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In accordance with this public-private mix of revenue, the centre’s governance has always been a hybrid, with the structure of a nonprofit board but with political appointees.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The centre’s board is authorised by its legislation to solicit and accept private donations, enter into contracts, maintain its halls and grounds and appoint and oversee professional leadership. For the most part, it has the same responsibilities as any nonprofit board.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There’s a big exception, however.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While most nonprofit boards recruit, elect and develop their own membership, the Kennedy Center board consists of government appointees. About two dozen trustees serve by </span><a href=\"https://uscode.house.gov/view.xhtml?hl=false&edition=2023&req=granuleid%3AUSC-2018-title20-chapter3-subchapter5&num=0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">virtue of their government office</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as the librarian of Congress, the secretary of state, the mayor of Washington and the speaker and the minority leader of the US House of Representatives.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Up to 36 more are appointed by the president, each </span><a href=\"https://www.kennedy-center.org/about-us/leadership/trustees/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serving staggered six-year terms</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> so that they don’t all expire at the same time.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2603391\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/12088623.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1994\" height=\"997\" /> <em>Issa Rae arrives for the 96th annual Academy Awards ceremony at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California, on 10 March 2024. (Photo: EPA – EFE / Kyle Grillott)</em></p>\r\n<h4><b>Is the board supposed to be nonpartisan?</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The six-year terms reflect a goal of establishing a largely nonpartisan governing board, since presidents usually appoint board members aligned with their own party. Until now, that balance has been the norm. But that outcome wasn’t mandated when Congress passed legislation establishing the Kennedy Center.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having a politically balanced board has </span><a href=\"https://www.washingtonpost.com/entertainment/2025/02/14/could-donald-trump-destroy-the-kennedy-center/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">historically helped the Kennedy Center</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> raise money and attract world-class artists. For example, the 2025 season, as of mid-February, will include, or has included, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, jazz pianist Kenny Barron, soprano Renée Fleming, author David Sedaris, comedian Sarah Silverman and touring productions of Parade and Les Misérables.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its in-house productions </span><a href=\"https://www.kennedy-center.org/wno/home/about/history-and-legacy/past-productions/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are often classic works</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as La Bohème and</span><a href=\"https://www.kennedy-center.org/nso/home/nso-label/beethoven/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Beethoven’s symphonies</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Many of the centre’s theatrical productions </span><a href=\"https://www.ibdb.com/broadway-organization/the-john-f-kennedy-center-for-the-performing-arts-20439\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have gone on to Broadway</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and national tours, including 42nd Street, Noises Off and revivals of The King and I, Annie and Spamalot.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I’m concerned that many longtime or potential future donors may not want to contribute to a cause that has suddenly become subject to partisan leadership.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many artists and creative partners have</span><a href=\"https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/politics-news/shonda-rhimes-resigns-kennedy-center-trump-1236134840/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> already begun to sever their ties</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the Kennedy Center or </span><a href=\"https://www.wusa9.com/article/news/community/artists-perfomers-quit-kennedy-center-amid-trump-takeover-truth-social/65-4d720779-b61f-449b-9e2a-9632cf879449\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cancel upcoming shows</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at its venues out of an aversion to the board’s dramatic political turn. Some performances and tours tied to the centre have been called off for other reasons that </span><a href=\"https://www.washingtonpost.com/style/2025/02/15/kennedy-center-cancellations-trump/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">haven’t yet been made public</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Members of the public may balk at attending events at a politically charged venue, especially with so many other performing arts options in and around Washington, reducing ticket sales.</span>\r\n<h4><b>What does the Kennedy Center chair do?</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Board chairs are in charge of the governing board, expending considerable energy, attention, effort, political muscle and often personal wealth to ensure that the </span><a href=\"https://www.google.com/books/edition/Boards_That_Make_a_Difference/djrJEAAAQBAJ?hl=en&gbpv=0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">organisation can thrive</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Kennedy Center’s prior chairs have not been figureheads. Rather, they have been actively engaged in fundraising, strategic planning and public advocacy. The legislation that chartered the centre requires that its chair and secretary “shall be well qualified by experience and training to perform the duties of their respective offices”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trump has admitted that he’s never seen a show at the Kennedy Center. He has no relevant arts board leadership experience. And he is </span><a href=\"https://embed.documentcloud.org/documents/6542108-trump-foundation-decision/?embed=1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">constrained from serving on a nonprofit board</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the state of New York after </span><a href=\"https://iapps.courts.state.ny.us/fbem/DocumentDisplayServlet?documentId=JLJih9v_PLUS_EKSuJs36THzexg==&system=prod\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">admitting to the misuse of charitable funds</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the now-dissolved Donald J Trump Foundation.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David Rubenstein, the board chair ousted by this upheaval, has given the Kennedy Center at least $111-million, </span><a href=\"https://www.washingtonpost.com/entertainment/2024/01/29/david-rubenstein-kennedy-center-chairman/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">making him the centre’s biggest donor yet</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. (Photo: EPA – EFE / Nina Prommer)</em></p>\r\n<h4><b>Has anything like this happened before?</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No US president has served as a member of the Kennedy Center board before, let alone its chair.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Presidents do often appoint their friends and allies to government boards and commissions, and often remove appointees of previous administrations. President Joe Biden, for example, removed Sean Spicer – a former Trump press secretary and White House communications director – from the </span><a href=\"https://www.washingtonpost.com/entertainment/2025/02/14/trump-kennedy-center-sean-spicer-lawsuit/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naval Academy advisory board</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But that board is leading a strictly governmental body, not a public-private hybrid so dependent on private funding. And the speed and scale of this purge are unprecedented.</span>\r\n<h4><b>What are the potential consequences?</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All big, multi-venue metropolitan performing arts centres are extraordinarily complex and difficult to manage.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The John F Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is particularly so. It hosts about 2,200 performances that draw </span><a href=\"https://wtop.com/dc/2025/02/how-trump-is-reshaping-the-kennedy-center-moving-away-from-woke-culture/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than two million visitors</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> each year, with an in-house </span><a href=\"https://www.kennedy-center.org/nso/home/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">symphony</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and </span><a href=\"https://www.kennedy-center.org/wno/home/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opera company</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It produces the</span><a href=\"https://www.kennedy-center.org/whats-on/honors/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Kennedy Center Honors</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which celebrate exceptional American artists with an annual gala, performance and television broadcast, and the </span><a href=\"https://www.kennedy-center.org/whats-on/marktwain/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mark Twain Prize</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which honours one accomplished American comedic actor, author or performer each year.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The centre hosts an annual event honouring a wide range of performers and other leaders in the arts.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It’s also a </span><a href=\"https://www.kennedy-center.org/education/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">national hub for arts education</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that serves 2.1 million students and teachers across all 50 states, doubling as an open campus: It offers</span><a href=\"https://www.kennedy-center.org/whats-on/millennium-stage/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> daily free performances</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of everything from classical chamber music and ballet to jazz and rock bands.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even under the best possible conditions, this is a lot to handle.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Successful arts nonprofits benefit from a governing board whose members have expertise in the arts, business and philanthropy, are loyal to the mission above themselves, and rigorously follow the law. Beyond those basics, ideal conditions also include having enthusiastic audiences, passionate donors, eager and exceptional artistic collaborators, and creative and administrative teams that are supported and empowered to do their difficult work.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With Trump’s takeover of the Kennedy Center board, this national cultural centre has now, essentially, turned into a branch of the White House. In my view, that’s </span><a href=\"https://www.washingtonpost.com/entertainment/2025/02/14/could-donald-trump-destroy-the-kennedy-center/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a disturbing turn of events</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a nation that celebrates free and creative expression. The remaining board members, most of whom he had recently appointed, then voted to make Trump the centre’s chairperson. The board also fired Deborah Rutter, who had served as the centre’s </span><a href=\"https://www.npr.org/2025/02/14/nx-s1-5296904/former-kennedy-center-president-speaks-out-in-first-interview-since-her-firing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">president since 2014</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and already </span><a href=\"https://www.kennedy-center.org/news-room/press-release-landing-page/kennedy-center-president-deborah-rutter-to-step-down/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">planned to step down seven months later</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The board </span><a href=\"https://theviolinchannel.com/ric-grenell-appointed-as-interim-executive-director-of-the-kennedy-center-deborah-f-rutters-contract-terminated/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">replaced Rutter with Richard Grenell</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who served in the first Trump administration.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Conversation US asked </span><a href=\"https://eandrewtaylor.art/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">E Andrew Taylor</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an arts management scholar, to explain how the Kennedy Center operates and sum up the significance of Trump’s unprecedented interference with its operations.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Why is the government involved in the Kennedy Center?</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Kennedy Center, a unique cultural enterprise located along the Potomac River in Washington, has a complex ownership and operating structure. The campus includes three large performance halls, two midsize theatres and many smaller venues and public spaces that host musical, theatrical and dance performances, lectures, exhibits and other special events. In form and function, it looks a lot like other major metropolitan performing arts centres, such as </span><a href=\"https://www.lincolncenter.org/home\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York City’s Lincoln Center</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But its structure is different.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Kennedy Center is part of the federal government. Officially, it’s a bureau under the </span><a href=\"https://uscode.house.gov/view.xhtml?hl=false&edition=2023&req=granuleid%3AUSC-2018-title20-chapter3-subchapter5&num=0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smithsonian Institution</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was originally conceived during the Eisenhower administration and later championed by President John F Kennedy. It was </span><a href=\"https://www.kennedy-center.org/globalassets/our-story/mission/kennedy-center-fy25-budget-justification-to-congress.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">named after JFK following his assassination</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The centre </span><a href=\"https://dcist.com/story/21/08/26/kennedy-center-50-years-facts-history/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opened in 1971</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with a world premiere of composer Leonard Bernstein’s Mass. </span><a href=\"https://time.com/7221538/donald-trump-kennedy-center/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">President Richard Nixon did not attend</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after the FBI warned him of possible anti-war messages encoded in the Latin text that might be designed to embarrass him.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The centre’s </span><a href=\"https://www.kennedy-center.org/our-story/mission/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">current mission statement</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> captures its purpose and goals:</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“As the nation’s cultural centre, and a living memorial to President John F Kennedy, we are a leader for the arts across America and around the world, reaching and connecting with artists, inspiring and educating communities. (Photo: EPA - EFE / Jim lo Scalzo)</em>[/caption]\r\n<h4><b>Why does the Kennedy Center have a nonprofit board?</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From the start, the Kennedy Center was </span><a href=\"https://uscode.house.gov/statutes/pl/85/874.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">planned as a public-private effort</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Government funding </span><a href=\"https://uscode.house.gov/view.xhtml?hl=false&edition=2023&req=granuleid%3AUSC-2018-title20-chapter3-subchapter5&num=0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">covers the maintenance, upkeep</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, security and restoration of the building and grounds.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Private funds, largely derived from ticket sales, individual donors, foundations and corporations, cover the performances, productions and other programmes.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those private funds cover more than three-quarters of the </span><a href=\"https://www.kennedy-center.org/globalassets/our-story/mission/kennedy-center-fy25-budget-justification-to-congress.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">centre’s budget</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Its </span><a href=\"https://www.kennedy-center.org/news-room/annual-report/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2023 annual report</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> explained that its $286-million in revenue included $152-million from ticket sales, services and fees, $85-million from donations and $45-million from the federal government, with the rest derived from income from its endowment and other sources.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In accordance with this public-private mix of revenue, the centre’s governance has always been a hybrid, with the structure of a nonprofit board but with political appointees.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The centre’s board is authorised by its legislation to solicit and accept private donations, enter into contracts, maintain its halls and grounds and appoint and oversee professional leadership. For the most part, it has the same responsibilities as any nonprofit board.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There’s a big exception, however.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While most nonprofit boards recruit, elect and develop their own membership, the Kennedy Center board consists of government appointees. About two dozen trustees serve by </span><a href=\"https://uscode.house.gov/view.xhtml?hl=false&edition=2023&req=granuleid%3AUSC-2018-title20-chapter3-subchapter5&num=0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">virtue of their government office</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as the librarian of Congress, the secretary of state, the mayor of Washington and the speaker and the minority leader of the US House of Representatives.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Up to 36 more are appointed by the president, each </span><a href=\"https://www.kennedy-center.org/about-us/leadership/trustees/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serving staggered six-year terms</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> so that they don’t all expire at the same time.</span>\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_2603391\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"1994\"]<img class=\"size-full wp-image-2603391\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/12088623.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1994\" height=\"997\" /> <em>Issa Rae arrives for the 96th annual Academy Awards ceremony at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California, on 10 March 2024. (Photo: EPA – EFE / Kyle Grillott)</em>[/caption]\r\n<h4><b>Is the board supposed to be nonpartisan?</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The six-year terms reflect a goal of establishing a largely nonpartisan governing board, since presidents usually appoint board members aligned with their own party. Until now, that balance has been the norm. But that outcome wasn’t mandated when Congress passed legislation establishing the Kennedy Center.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having a politically balanced board has </span><a href=\"https://www.washingtonpost.com/entertainment/2025/02/14/could-donald-trump-destroy-the-kennedy-center/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">historically helped the Kennedy Center</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> raise money and attract world-class artists. For example, the 2025 season, as of mid-February, will include, or has included, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, jazz pianist Kenny Barron, soprano Renée Fleming, author David Sedaris, comedian Sarah Silverman and touring productions of Parade and Les Misérables.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its in-house productions </span><a href=\"https://www.kennedy-center.org/wno/home/about/history-and-legacy/past-productions/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are often classic works</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as La Bohème and</span><a href=\"https://www.kennedy-center.org/nso/home/nso-label/beethoven/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Beethoven’s symphonies</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Many of the centre’s theatrical productions </span><a href=\"https://www.ibdb.com/broadway-organization/the-john-f-kennedy-center-for-the-performing-arts-20439\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have gone on to Broadway</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and national tours, including 42nd Street, Noises Off and revivals of The King and I, Annie and Spamalot.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I’m concerned that many longtime or potential future donors may not want to contribute to a cause that has suddenly become subject to partisan leadership.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many artists and creative partners have</span><a href=\"https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/politics-news/shonda-rhimes-resigns-kennedy-center-trump-1236134840/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> already begun to sever their ties</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the Kennedy Center or </span><a href=\"https://www.wusa9.com/article/news/community/artists-perfomers-quit-kennedy-center-amid-trump-takeover-truth-social/65-4d720779-b61f-449b-9e2a-9632cf879449\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cancel upcoming shows</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at its venues out of an aversion to the board’s dramatic political turn. Some performances and tours tied to the centre have been called off for other reasons that </span><a href=\"https://www.washingtonpost.com/style/2025/02/15/kennedy-center-cancellations-trump/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">haven’t yet been made public</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Members of the public may balk at attending events at a politically charged venue, especially with so many other performing arts options in and around Washington, reducing ticket sales.</span>\r\n<h4><b>What does the Kennedy Center chair do?</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Board chairs are in charge of the governing board, expending considerable energy, attention, effort, political muscle and often personal wealth to ensure that the </span><a href=\"https://www.google.com/books/edition/Boards_That_Make_a_Difference/djrJEAAAQBAJ?hl=en&gbpv=0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">organisation can thrive</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Kennedy Center’s prior chairs have not been figureheads. Rather, they have been actively engaged in fundraising, strategic planning and public advocacy. The legislation that chartered the centre requires that its chair and secretary “shall be well qualified by experience and training to perform the duties of their respective offices”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trump has admitted that he’s never seen a show at the Kennedy Center. He has no relevant arts board leadership experience. And he is </span><a href=\"https://embed.documentcloud.org/documents/6542108-trump-foundation-decision/?embed=1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">constrained from serving on a nonprofit board</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the state of New York after </span><a href=\"https://iapps.courts.state.ny.us/fbem/DocumentDisplayServlet?documentId=JLJih9v_PLUS_EKSuJs36THzexg==&system=prod\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">admitting to the misuse of charitable funds</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the now-dissolved Donald J Trump Foundation.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David Rubenstein, the board chair ousted by this upheaval, has given the Kennedy Center at least $111-million, </span><a href=\"https://www.washingtonpost.com/entertainment/2024/01/29/david-rubenstein-kennedy-center-chairman/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">making him the centre’s biggest donor yet</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. (Photo: EPA – EFE / Nina Prommer)</em>[/caption]\r\n<h4><b>Has anything like this happened before?</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No US president has served as a member of the Kennedy Center board before, let alone its chair.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Presidents do often appoint their friends and allies to government boards and commissions, and often remove appointees of previous administrations. President Joe Biden, for example, removed Sean Spicer – a former Trump press secretary and White House communications director – from the </span><a href=\"https://www.washingtonpost.com/entertainment/2025/02/14/trump-kennedy-center-sean-spicer-lawsuit/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naval Academy advisory board</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But that board is leading a strictly governmental body, not a public-private hybrid so dependent on private funding. And the speed and scale of this purge are unprecedented.</span>\r\n<h4><b>What are the potential consequences?</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All big, multi-venue metropolitan performing arts centres are extraordinarily complex and difficult to manage.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The John F Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is particularly so. It hosts about 2,200 performances that draw </span><a href=\"https://wtop.com/dc/2025/02/how-trump-is-reshaping-the-kennedy-center-moving-away-from-woke-culture/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than two million visitors</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> each year, with an in-house </span><a href=\"https://www.kennedy-center.org/nso/home/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">symphony</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and </span><a href=\"https://www.kennedy-center.org/wno/home/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opera company</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It produces the</span><a href=\"https://www.kennedy-center.org/whats-on/honors/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Kennedy Center Honors</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which celebrate exceptional American artists with an annual gala, performance and television broadcast, and the </span><a href=\"https://www.kennedy-center.org/whats-on/marktwain/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mark Twain Prize</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which honours one accomplished American comedic actor, author or performer each year.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The centre hosts an annual event honouring a wide range of performers and other leaders in the arts.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It’s also a </span><a href=\"https://www.kennedy-center.org/education/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">national hub for arts education</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that serves 2.1 million students and teachers across all 50 states, doubling as an open campus: It offers</span><a href=\"https://www.kennedy-center.org/whats-on/millennium-stage/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> daily free performances</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of everything from classical chamber music and ballet to jazz and rock bands.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even under the best possible conditions, this is a lot to handle.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Successful arts nonprofits benefit from a governing board whose members have expertise in the arts, business and philanthropy, are loyal to the mission above themselves, and rigorously follow the law. Beyond those basics, ideal conditions also include having enthusiastic audiences, passionate donors, eager and exceptional artistic collaborators, and creative and administrative teams that are supported and empowered to do their difficult work.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With Trump’s takeover of the Kennedy Center board, this national cultural centre has now, essentially, turned into a branch of the White House. In my view, that’s </span><a href=\"https://www.washingtonpost.com/entertainment/2025/02/14/could-donald-trump-destroy-the-kennedy-center/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a disturbing turn of events</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a nation that celebrates free and creative expression.
