She was joined by Micah Reddy from investigative journalism agency amaBhungane and fellow </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> journalist Pieter-Louis Myburgh. </span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-573139\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/Sandisiwe-investigations-gather-inset-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\" /> Investigative journalist Micah Reddy at Daily Maverick’s The Gathering on Friday, 6 March 2020. (Photo: Leila Dougan)</p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The panel delved into the backlash and intimidation experienced by investigative journalists when they report on serious corruption.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“We sometimes need corporates and civil society to stand up and say, ‘This is not how you talk’,” said Van Wyk.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Via Daily Maverick, Van Wyk </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2018-11-21-vbs-bank-heist-effs-family-ties-and-moneyed-connections/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blew open the lid</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on how EFF bigwigs Floyd Shivambu and Julius Malema benefitted by millions of rands from the now-defunct VBS Mutual Bank.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And all three on the panel were part of the team that uncovered the </span><a href=\"https://www.gupta-leaks.com/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#GuptaLeaks</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reddy said media in South Africa enjoyed a high level of press freedom, but felt that this was now under threat.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“For all the trolling online we experience, we can publish stuff and still feel relatively safe. Journalists aren’t getting killed and locked up here.
