Unlocking innovation in the township economy by helping entrepreneurs to scale their ideas

To truly support and develop township entrepreneurs, we must broaden our definition of innovation beyond just tech. We need to guide entrepreneurs through the journey of transforming their ideas into scalable businesses.

When I look back at my upbringing and how we have continually forged ahead as people, one resounding truth stands out: progress is impossible without enterprise and innovation.

Growing up in a township, we were constantly exposed to our parents and grandparents finding ingenious ways to navigate our tough circumstances, which often meant having limited resources. Their deep desire to provide solutions for their families put them in a position to innovate with the little they had in order to build sustainability. Innovation wasn’t just a buzzword; it was a necessity.

In this context, it’s crucial to shine a light on the essence of innovation, which I see as the confluence of two ideologies. True innovation emerges when diverse ways of thinking collide, much like the fusion of a camera and a phone. Innovation is the process of bringing about new ideas, methods, and solutions that will have an impact and value. However, the challenge is that we have limited support interventions on innovation simply to focus on technological innovations.

This is a limited view because we are focused on the substance and not the form. The real focus should be on understanding how communities do things, how they have evolved processes to build value, and the creative ways they have applied the use of discarded materials and resources to give them meaning in an innovative new light.

Repurposed

I am reminded of my resourceful grandmother. She repurposed discarded sacks of oranges into bathing instruments, rugs, and cleaning tools. Similarly, ice cream containers were transformed into lunch tins and food storage containers. These examples illustrate that we have always been innovative and creative. The challenge lies not in our capacity to innovate, but in commercialising these ideas and scaling them for the broader market.

To truly support and develop township entrepreneurs, we must broaden our definition of innovation beyond just tech. We need to guide entrepreneurs through the journey of transforming their ideas into scalable businesses. This means understanding that their ideas, no matter how simple, can be commercialised and grown.

Globally, Africa is seen as the next frontier. However, to unlock this potential we must empower the inhabitants of these great African countries to recognise and seize opportunities. Here are three key steps to achieve this:

  • Exposure to new ways of thinking: we must be open-minded and willing to expose township entrepreneurs to new perspectives. This exposure is the first step in sparking innovative ideas.

  • Exposure to new environments and processes: sometimes, seeing how things are made or done differently can lead to “aha” moments. We need to facilitate this exposure.

  • Networking across diverse spaces: by connecting township entrepreneurs with different networks, we can foster the exchange of ideas and inspire groundbreaking innovations.

One inspiring example is an entrepreneur named Tebogo. He uses a trolley to sell fat cakes (amagwinya) door to door to his customers. As he pushes his trolley about town, he has assembled a team of distributors who fry and sell the dough he has mixed with his special ingredients. He ferments the dough in the sun and then cooks it over a fire. This innovative approach not only meets his customers where they are, but also redefines food delivery. If we can scale such ideas, we can redefine the township economy.

Our goal should be to support these entrepreneurs in scaling their innovations. We need to look beyond our limited definitions of innovation and genuinely invest in helping township entrepreneurs reach new heights.

Driving inclusive innovation means bringing everyone along on this journey. By sharing stories of successful township entrepreneurs and programmes, we can inspire and propel the township economy to unprecedented heights. DM
