"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that the sighs of relief have been expelled and</span><a href=\"https://www.firstpost.com/world/a-new-day-in-america-joe-bidens-victory-prompts-spontaneous-celebrations-across-us-8992651.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spontaneous celebrations begun</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that</span><a href=\"https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/tv/story/2020-11-07/election-2020-kamala-harris-pantsuit-van-jones-tears-trump-defeat-for-non-white-america\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the tears have been shed</span></a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at the first black woman of South Asian descent ascending to our nation’s second-highest elected office.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that our president-elect has honoured all of those who helped him reach a pinnacle he first sought more than three decades ago and</span><a href=\"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aVl_1YNXOfc\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has declared this a time to heal</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the temptation exists to simply look forward.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To analyse the reasons for Biden’s victory, to congratulate him on his</span><a href=\"https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/523767-biden-pokes-gops-basement-attack-with-drive-in-rally-photo\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">basement campaign’s</span></a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">discipline and strategy, to revel in the</span><a href=\"https://www.cnbc.com/2020/11/04/2020-election-sees-record-high-turnout-with-at-least-159point8-million-votes-projected.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">record levels of voter turnout</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> – all the more remarkable because of the pandemic – and to hear and honour the stories of people who</span><a href=\"https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-10-14/why-some-americans-had-to-wait-11-hours-to-vote/12765128\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">waited up to 11 hours to cast their precious vote</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the impulse is understandable, especially given how difficult 2020 has been, to do so would be short-sighted. Rather, we need also to consider the anguished question family and friends living in Massachusetts and California have asked me in the election’s aftermath: how could</span><a href=\"https://www.nytimes.com/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than 70 million people</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have voted for Donald Trump?</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On one level, the question makes total sense.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trump’s</span><a href=\"https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2020/07/13/president-trump-has-made-more-than-20000-false-or-misleading-claims/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">daily lies</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, continual assault on our country’s democratic fabric,</span><a href=\"https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/media/new-study-says-trump-has-dangerously-undermined-truth-with-attacks-on-news-media/2020/04/15/4152f81c-7f2d-11ea-9040-68981f488eed_story.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> denigration and demonisation of the media</span></a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and all who oppose him,</span><a href=\"https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2020/01/even-william-barr-worried-trump-is-cozying-up-to-dictators\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cosying up to brutal dictators</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and</span><a href=\"https://www.hrw.org/news/2019/10/31/self-dealing-trump-kleptocrats-role-model\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">self-dealing</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as president have all been on display for nearly four years.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indeed, I would argue that they were the driving force for millions of the Biden/Harris voters.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time, we need to face a few hard realities.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first is that, no matter how effective his campaign was, for many Biden was a flawed, hold-your-nose-and-vote candidate, rather than someone they could enthusiastically back.</span><a href=\"https://theintercept.com/2020/11/06/election-biden-democrats-progressives/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many progressives throughout the country</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> voted for Biden more as a check on Trump’s further erosion of our democracy than as a strong endorsement of the Democratic standard bearer. While we’ll never know, I would suggest that Trump would have romped to a second term had the coronavirus not occurred.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond that, it’s worth noting that Trump supporters are not a monolithic group. Rather, they are a collection of people with distinct, occasionally overlapping, interests and motivations.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are the died-in-the-wool Republicans who will vote for the party no matter who is atop the ticket.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are the equivalent of many of the Biden voters, those whose didn’t like Trump’s tweeting and posturing, but supported his policies nonetheless.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are those who enjoy his showmanship and brazenness, who gain pleasure from his message that he will determine reality and his refusal to ever acknowledge or admit wrongdoing. Who are enamoured of his large lifestyle, the longtime celebrity, and the billions of dollars, even though it’s been</span><a href=\"https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/09/27/us/donald-trump-taxes.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shown by </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The New York Times</span></i></a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to largely be a house of cards.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are those who revelled in Trump’s racism, in his bringing bigotry and xenophobia and hatred of those who are different from the margins to the mainstream.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are not exclusive categories, and perhaps the bigger challenge for our nation going forward is the group who comprise a significant swathe of his backers.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They swim in the information ecosystem of </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fox News</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, regularly, if not religiously,</span><a href=\"https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/tv/story/2020-06-30/hannity-carlson-and-trump-a-winning-trio-for-fox-news-channel\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">watching Hannity and Carlson</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and</span><a href=\"https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2020/10/rush-limbaugh-donald-trump-right-wing-media.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">listening to Rush Limbaugh</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Many traffic in</span><a href=\"https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2020/10/22/qanon-poll-finds-half-trump-supporters-believe-baseless-claims/3725567001/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">QAnon’s baseless conspiracy theories</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Among other things,</span><a href=\"https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-election/qanon-conspiracy-mostly-true-republicans-trump-daily-kos-civiqs-poll-a9702261.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they believe in the “deep state,”</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that this week’s</span><a href=\"https://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/politics/elections/fl-ne-south-florida-reacts-biden-win-20201107-jpfkrb5yezbmpneynno7d7iciy-story.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> election was a sham</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, that the coronavirus</span><a href=\"https://www.vox.com/2020/10/25/21532166/pew-poll-republicans-democrats-coronavirus-issue-election-economy-polarization\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is not very important</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, that</span><a href=\"https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/01/us/coronavirus-masks.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mask mandates are tyranny,</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that Trump was the victim of years of investigation that proved no wrongdoing, and that his impeachment was</span><a href=\"https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/politics-news/trump-allies-revel-end-hoax-impeachment-democrats-say-vote-normalized-n1131186\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a purely politically motivated hoax</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In short, Trump Senior Adviser Kellyanne Conway was just telling part of the story when she spoke about former press secretary Sean Spicer</span><a href=\"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSrEEDQgFc8\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">giving “alternative facts”</span></a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when he lied about the crowd size of Trump’s inauguration.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These people are not looking at a similar set of facts as many Democrats and arriving at different conclusions, philosophies and policy descriptions.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rather, many of Trump’s supporters are living in an entirely different world than the people who supported Biden. They have a deep attachment to their world view, their leader and the sense of community.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You don’t have to look hard to see it.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It’s there in their following the president’s</span><a href=\"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVTpBG24Rdk\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">refusal to concede Biden’s projected victory</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and supporting his </span><a href=\"https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/addybaird/trump-lies-presidential-election-fraud\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lies of massive voting fraud</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can see it in the rallies across the country to</span><a href=\"https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2020/11/07/election-protests-updates-trump-supporters-state-capitols-biden-win/6203271002/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Stop the Steal.”</span></a>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These people are not going to surrender easily or, all but certainly, respond positively to Biden’s words and outreach. No matter how noble the intentions and how sincere the gestures, these deeply entrenched divisions may well prove hard, if not impossible, to bridge.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, while we applaud President-elect Biden and Vice-President-elect Harris for their historic victory and their generous tone, we should not look away from the magnitude of what lies in front of us.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We must take up that necessary and hopeful work with a full heart and a clear-eyed view of the nature and enormity of the task ahead.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our democracy was on the ballot.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The worst scenario has been averted.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the challenge for all of us to help our nation be true to its lofty promises for everyone remains. </span><b>DM</b>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jeff Kelly Lowenstein is the founder and executive director of the Center for Collaborative Investigative Journalism (CCIJ) and the Padnos/Sarosik Endowed Professor or Civil Discourse at Grand Valley State University.</span></i>",
