They are part of extended reality environments, which “enable </span><a href=\"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/9781119636113.ch30\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ever more realistic and immersive experiences</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">”.</span></p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">VR provides entry into computer-generated 3D worlds and games with different environments and interactions. Sometimes this is loosely referred to as the “metaverse”.</span></p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The majority of VR headsets have a </span><a href=\"https://www.nytimes.com/2023/06/16/technology/meta-virtual-reality-headset-children-safety.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lower age limit of 10 to 13 years</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because of </span><a href=\"https://www.unicef.org/globalinsight/stories/metaverse-and-children\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">safety concerns</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about extended reality technologies in general, and VR headsets in particular.</span></p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But VR is increasingly used by young children, </span><a href=\"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0747563222003661\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">even of preschool age</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These immersive technologies make it difficult to monitor children’s physical and emotional experiences and with whom they interact.</span></p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, what are the dangers, and what can we do to keep the kids safe?</span></p>\r\n\r\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>The good and the bad</b></h4>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">VR allows children to dive into a digital world where they can immerse themselves in different characters (avatars). Thanks to the richness of the stimuli, VR can give the illusion of actually being in the virtual location – this is called “</span><a href=\"https://www.techtarget.com/whatis/definition/virtual-presence\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">virtual presence</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">”.</span></p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If children then interact with other people in the virtual world, the psychological realism is enhanced. These experiences can be fun and rewarding.</span></p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, they can also have negative impacts. Children tend to have </span><a href=\"https://www.unicef.org/globalinsight/media/3056/file/UNICEF-Innocenti-Rapid-Analysis-Metaverse-XR-and-children-2023.pdf.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">difficulty distinguishing</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between what occurs in VR and in the real world.</span></p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As children </span><a href=\"https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10055-021-00563-w\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">identify with their avatars</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the boundary between them and the </span><a href=\"https://learning.nspcc.org.uk/research-resources/2023/child-safeguarding-immersive-technologies\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">VR device is blurred</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when playing in the metaverse.</span></p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children can even develop traumatic memories when playing in virtual worlds. Because of the immersive nature of VR, the sense of presence makes it feel as if the child’s avatar is “real”.</span></p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research is still emerging, but it is known that children can form memories from virtual experiences, which means sexual abuse that occurs virtually could turn into a </span><a href=\"https://learning.nspcc.org.uk/research-resources/2023/child-safeguarding-immersive-technologies\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">real-world traumatic memory</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span></p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2112493\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/P30-VR-keeping-kids-safe.jpg\" alt=\"VR grooming\" width=\"720\" height=\"360\" /> <em>Photo: Unsplash</em></p>\r\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>The rise of ‘cybergrooming’</b></h4>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research has found that online predators use different grooming strategies to </span><a href=\"https://learning.nspcc.org.uk/media/ezjg0pjb/online-risks-children-evidence-review-main-report.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">manipulate children into sexual interactions</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This sometimes leads to offline encounters without the knowledge of parents.</span></p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nonthreatening grooming strategies that build relationships are common. Perpetrators may use friendship strategies to develop a relationship with children and build trust. The child then views the person as a trusted friend rather than a stranger. As a result, the prevention messages about strangers learnt through education programmes are ineffective in protecting children.</span></p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A recent </span><a href=\"https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/pdf/10.1177/15248380231194072?casa_token=1nA9ftvuB_AAAAAA:QlhaRr0-ori1SG5SdwUnV9XwK8JUhmwHW3hzgZyJluTDbFPi5KlxCZe2tfvsmHPRXpMuGLeiONiWVxg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meta-analysis</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that online sex offenders are usually acquaintances. Unsurprisingly, a proportion of adult predators pretend to be peers (that is, other children or teens).</span></p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sexual approaches by adults occur more commonly on platforms that are widely used by children. “Sexual communication with a child” offences, according to police statistics from the UK, </span><a href=\"https://learning.nspcc.org.uk/media/ezjg0pjb/online-risks-children-evidence-review-main-report.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased by 84%</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between 2017/18 and 2021/22.</span></p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of the hidden nature of cybergrooming, it is difficult to know the true prevalence of this problem. Some </span><a href=\"https://learning.nspcc.org.uk/research-resources/2023/online-risks-to-children-evidence-review\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">police reports in Europe</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> indicate that about 20% of children have experienced online sexual solicitation, and up to 25% reported sexual interaction with an adult online.</span></p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Concerning reports by Europol indicate that </span><a href=\"https://doi.org/10.2813/81062\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">children have been drawn into erotic role play</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> online. In interviews with researchers, some parents </span><a href=\"https://www.researchgate.net/publication/339228857_2020_Educated_women_as_gatekeeprs_to_prevent_sexual_exploitation_of_children#fullTextFileContent\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have also shared anecdotal experiences</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of their children being exposed to explicit sex acts on social online gaming platforms </span><a href=\"https://blog.hootsuite.com/what-is-roblox/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">such as Roblox</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span></p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Such encounters have the potential to create memories as if the virtual experience had occurred in real life.</span></p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For parents, it is important to know that cybergroomers are well versed in the use of extremely popular virtual worlds. These provide predators with anonymity and easy access to children, where they can lure them into sexual engagement.</span></p>\r\n\r\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>Parents must try VR themselves</b></h4>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A recent report from the </span><a href=\"https://www.iwf.org.uk/news-media/news/under-10s-groomed-online-like-never-before-as-hotline-discovers-record-amount-of-child-sexual-abuse/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Internet Watch Foundation</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> charity says a record number of young children have been manipulated into performing sexual acts online.</span></p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through the metaverse, a sexual offender can be virtually brought into a child’s bedroom and engage in sexual behaviours through the child’s VR device. As VR worlds become more immersive, the danger for children only increases.</span></p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grooming occurs where parents least expect it to happen. To mitigate this danger, parents need to be aware of </span><a href=\"https://icmec.org.au/blog/the-new-stranger-danger-tactics-used-in-the-online-grooming-of-children/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">online grooming patterns</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as isolating the child, developing their trust and asking them to hide a relationship.</span></p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recognising the signs early can prevent the abuse from happening. Children tend to have </span><a href=\"https://www.unicef.org/globalinsight/media/3056/file/UNICEF-Innocenti-Rapid-Analysis-Metaverse-XR-and-children-2023.pdf.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">difficulty distinguishing</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between what occurs in VR and in the real world.</span></p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As children </span><a href=\"https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10055-021-00563-w\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">identify with their avatars</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the boundary between them and the </span><a href=\"https://learning.nspcc.org.uk/research-resources/2023/child-safeguarding-immersive-technologies\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">VR device is blurred</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when playing in the metaverse.</span></p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children can even develop traumatic memories when playing in virtual worlds. Because of the immersive nature of VR, the sense of presence makes it feel as if the child’s avatar is “real”.</span></p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research is still emerging, but it is known that children can form memories from virtual experiences, which means sexual abuse that occurs virtually could turn into a </span><a href=\"https://learning.nspcc.org.uk/research-resources/2023/child-safeguarding-immersive-technologies\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">real-world traumatic memory</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span></p>\r\n\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_2112493\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"720\"]<img class=\"size-full wp-image-2112493\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/P30-VR-keeping-kids-safe.jpg\" alt=\"VR grooming\" width=\"720\" height=\"360\" /> <em>Photo: Unsplash</em>[/caption]\r\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>The rise of ‘cybergrooming’</b></h4>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research has found that online predators use different grooming strategies to </span><a href=\"https://learning.nspcc.org.uk/media/ezjg0pjb/online-risks-children-evidence-review-main-report.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">manipulate children into sexual interactions</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This sometimes leads to offline encounters without the knowledge of parents.</span></p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nonthreatening grooming strategies that build relationships are common. Perpetrators may use friendship strategies to develop a relationship with children and build trust. The child then views the person as a trusted friend rather than a stranger. As a result, the prevention messages about strangers learnt through education programmes are ineffective in protecting children.</span></p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A recent </span><a href=\"https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/pdf/10.1177/15248380231194072?casa_token=1nA9ftvuB_AAAAAA:QlhaRr0-ori1SG5SdwUnV9XwK8JUhmwHW3hzgZyJluTDbFPi5KlxCZe2tfvsmHPRXpMuGLeiONiWVxg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meta-analysis</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that online sex offenders are usually acquaintances. Unsurprisingly, a proportion of adult predators pretend to be peers (that is, other children or teens).</span></p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sexual approaches by adults occur more commonly on platforms that are widely used by children. “Sexual communication with a child” offences, according to police statistics from the UK, </span><a href=\"https://learning.nspcc.org.uk/media/ezjg0pjb/online-risks-children-evidence-review-main-report.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased by 84%</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between 2017/18 and 2021/22.</span></p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of the hidden nature of cybergrooming, it is difficult to know the true prevalence of this problem. Some </span><a href=\"https://learning.nspcc.org.uk/research-resources/2023/online-risks-to-children-evidence-review\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">police reports in Europe</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> indicate that about 20% of children have experienced online sexual solicitation, and up to 25% reported sexual interaction with an adult online.</span></p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Concerning reports by Europol indicate that </span><a href=\"https://doi.org/10.2813/81062\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">children have been drawn into erotic role play</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> online. In interviews with researchers, some parents </span><a href=\"https://www.researchgate.net/publication/339228857_2020_Educated_women_as_gatekeeprs_to_prevent_sexual_exploitation_of_children#fullTextFileContent\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have also shared anecdotal experiences</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of their children being exposed to explicit sex acts on social online gaming platforms </span><a href=\"https://blog.hootsuite.com/what-is-roblox/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">such as Roblox</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span></p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Such encounters have the potential to create memories as if the virtual experience had occurred in real life.</span></p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For parents, it is important to know that cybergroomers are well versed in the use of extremely popular virtual worlds. These provide predators with anonymity and easy access to children, where they can lure them into sexual engagement.</span></p>\r\n\r\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>Parents must try VR themselves</b></h4>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A recent report from the </span><a href=\"https://www.iwf.org.uk/news-media/news/under-10s-groomed-online-like-never-before-as-hotline-discovers-record-amount-of-child-sexual-abuse/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Internet Watch Foundation</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> charity says a record number of young children have been manipulated into performing sexual acts online.</span></p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through the metaverse, a sexual offender can be virtually brought into a child’s bedroom and engage in sexual behaviours through the child’s VR device. As VR worlds become more immersive, the danger for children only increases.</span></p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grooming occurs where parents least expect it to happen. To mitigate this danger, parents need to be aware of </span><a href=\"https://icmec.org.au/blog/the-new-stranger-danger-tactics-used-in-the-online-grooming-of-children/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">online grooming patterns</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as isolating the child, developing their trust and asking them to hide a relationship.</span></p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recognising the signs early can prevent the abuse from happening.
