Parliament empties, schools burn, Trump leads

Weekend of 7 May 2016

"The worst thing you can call a girl is a girl. The worst thing you can call a guy is a girl. Being a woman is the ultimate insult. Now tell me that’s not royally fucked up.”

This week's wrap-up

Futures in flames

More than 20 schools have been set alight, 50 closed and 600 000 pupils consequently affected in the Vuwani area in Vhembe, Limpopo. Community members have been protesting the incorporation of Vuwani into the new Malamulele Municipality. Feeding into all round, fear-fueled election run-up, an on-fire Zuma suggested that a ‘sinister force’ is behind the torchings.

Parliament empties
Opposition parties gave President Zuma the chance to monologise his minions when they boycotted his response to the Presidency’s budget vote debate on Thursday. Having kicked up one parliamentary dust storm after another, Zuma pulled his head out of the sand to chide incredulous MPs about their behaviour in the National Assembly.

New presumptive position…Same Trump
Donald Trump triumphed as the presumptive Republican nominee this week. More Republicans backed nervously away from their new leader, and a Reuters poll cleared up what we’ve all been wondering: Trump’s main selling point? Stopping Hilary. Dive in-depth.

Panama papers source speaks
The gutsy 'John Doe’ behind Panama Papers has offered to aid investigators in return for immunity. Doe added a further 1800 word statement to his original offerings, stating his occupation and motives to be ‘not a spy or government employee’ and ‘income equality', respectively.
