"description": "Daily Maverick is an independent online news publication and weekly print newspaper in South Africa.\r\n\r\nIt is known for breaking some of the defining stories of South Africa in the past decade, including the Marikana Massacre, in which the South African Police Service killed 34 miners in August 2012.\r\n\r\nIt also investigated the Gupta Leaks, which won the 2019 Global Shining Light Award.\r\n\r\nThat investigation was credited with exposing the Indian-born Gupta family and former President Jacob Zuma for their role in the systemic political corruption referred to as state capture.\r\n\r\nIn 2018, co-founder and editor-in-chief Branislav ‘Branko’ Brkic was awarded the country’s prestigious Nat Nakasa Award, recognised for initiating the investigative collaboration after receiving the hard drive that included the email tranche.\r\n\r\nIn 2021, co-founder and CEO Styli Charalambous also received the award.\r\n\r\nDaily Maverick covers the latest political and news developments in South Africa with breaking news updates, analysis, opinions and more.",

After that people become increasingly vulnerable to reinfection.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veldhoen and Simas argue that the behaviour of the virus and the body’s immune response is closely aligned to other coronaviruses. There are already four coronaviruses circulating through the human population that cause common colds, mild upper respiratory tract infections that are seldom fatal.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At any time, 60% to 70% of the population have antibodies that fight these viruses – what Veldhoen and Simas call a spectrum of immunity. Over time smaller groups of people are intermittently reinfected (this is what characterises a virus as endemic). The high rates of immunity mean the group as a whole is protected and the risk of severe infection in vulnerable people is much lower.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With a time limit on the protection afforded by infection or vaccination, Veldhoen and Simas argue that global vaccination programmes will not succeed in totally eradicating Covid-19.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But there is good news. They predict that vaccination programmes will not need to continue in perpetuity, as long as a high percentage of people who have antibodies to the virus is maintained. This will limit the spread of future outbreaks. In short, Veldhoen and Simas predict that SARS-CoV-2 is likely to become a “fifth endemic common cold [corona]virus”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veldhoen and Simas argue that the emergence of Covid-19 variants will not have a significant effect on population immunity since “new variants will unlikely differ sufficiently to escape established immunity”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nature journals are the most reputable in the scientific community but Veldhoen and Simas’s commentary must be treated cautiously since predicting the future is hard.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nevertheless, the bottom line is: Vaccinations are important. We will probably not eradicate SARS-CoV-2 but the death rate from the disease will drop to similar low levels associated with the common cold. </span><b>DM</b>",
