SA Opposition: Smart alliances needed to turbo-charge the 'second coming'



Not many people remember that South Africa was led by a government of national unity from 1994. National Party and Inkatha Freedom Party leaders held positions in President Nelson Mandela’s Cabinet even though they were unlikely bedfellows for the ANC. The 2016 local government elections will open the space for coalitions in hotly contested municipalities and areas where no party will in a clear majority. But opposition parties, particularly the Democratic Alliance (DA), are in desperate need of a game plan for the 2019 elections. Unless they are willing to wait for divine intervention to break the ANC’s hold on power, it is time to think out of the box. By RANJENI MUNUSAMY.

Glory for Ronaldo's squad at Euro 2016


Portugal has defeated France 1-0 in the Euro 2016 final. With captain and all-round pillar of the team, Ronaldo, carted off with a knee-related injury early in the game (complete with moth on his face), the odds appeared to tip into France's favour. It was Éder, however, who shut every French mouth in the stadium, scoring the winning goal and earning worldwide acclaim for a well deserved victory. Read More
















Dallas shooter planned larger attack


Micah Johnson, one of the Dallas shooters, planned a larger attack, but used the recent spate of police killings as a trigger for his own deadly assault on police officers. Bomb-making materials and manuals on how to detonate them were found in Johnson's house, along with messages supporting militant groups in the United States. Read more
















Earthquake hits Ecuador


A 6.4 magnitude earthquake has hit the same area that experienced a 7.8 magnitude earthquake in April. Striking in the early hours of Monday morning, its epicentre was 41 kilometers (25.5 miles) south of the town of Propicia. No firm information on casualties is available yet. Read more
















Brexit worries dominate Farnborough


Concern shrouds the Farnborough Air Show over the fate of British jobs and the country's aerospace industry. Running from the 11th to 17th July, Farnborough can generate billions of dollars in business for major aviation juggernauts. But Brexit could threaten thousands of British jobs related to the aerospace industry, major companies have warned. Read more
