Elections aftermath: Why did the ANC ignore its own research?





Lost to fruitless and wasteful expenditure: R1.37-billion, 70% of it gobbled up by Prasa, Nomvula Mokonyane’s department of Water and Sanitation as well as three departments in the education sector. Unauthorised expenditure hoovered up R925-million of public funds while around R46-billion was lost to irregular expenditure. From these figures it is clear South Africa is not a poor country. It is one where billions has been lost to mismanagement, corruption, indolence and indifference. Imagine what we could be if we could find a way of stemming the tide. Clinton speaks out in first public appearance



Hillary Clinton has made her first public appearance following her loss of the US presidential race to Donald Trump. Speaking at the Children's Defense Fund, Clinton admitted that she simply wanted to “curl up with a good book or our dogs, and never leave the house again”.





 





De Villiers remains as Proteas captain



Selectors announced late on Wednesday that AB de Villiers' job as skipper was secure, despite increasing leadership from stand-in Faf du Plessis. Although wracked by injury, it appears South African selectors are content with De Villiers' leadership, potentially until the series against Sri Lanka in December.





 









Facebook buys face recognition start-up



Facebook is now quite literally in your face. The social media giant has bought FacioMetrics, a facial recognition start-up, in order to compete against SnapChat more effectively. Facebook had previously attempted to buy the popular app but now appears content in simply trying to out-do them.





 





Monet painting fetches record price



A Claude Monet painting entitled ‘Meule’ has fetched a rather insane price tag on auction. Bought by a buyer on a phone, the painting sold for $81.4 million. The initial estimated sale price for one of Monet's last privately-owned paintings was around $45 million.
