Marius Fransman: Sex, Lies, WhatsApps and the truth behind The Bursary 



It was a member of the ANC’s Integrity Committee (IC) who, in her personal capacity, offered to help Louisa Wynand, the young woman who has accused ANC Western Cape Provincial leader Marius Fransman of sexually assaulting her, to apply for a bursary to further her studies. The ANC member approached Fransman’s accuser after she had given tearful testimony to the committee in April. By MARIANNE THAMM.

On Sunday Virginia Raggi rose to the mayoral seat, becoming Rome's first female city leader in its history. Raggi represents the Five Star Movement (M5S) and at 37 years of old, is  one of the youngest. With rampant corruption and general abuse of power facing her leadership, she will certainly need to hit the ground running. Read more
















Star Trek actor dies in car accident


Anton Yelchin, the 27-year-old actor who plays Chekov in the new Star Trek movies, has died. Yelchin's car rolled backwards down his steep driveway, after he'd got out of it, pinning him against a brick pillar and security fence. Read more
















Brexit vote casts an anxious pall


The Brexit vote on 23 June has resulted in a flurry of "what if" scenarios. As leaving the EU will have consequences for everything from Britain's Cornish pie industry to general rights of its citizens in Europe, this week's referendum has fairly high stakes. With many years of paperwork ahead to secure a "leaving" of the EU, however, this is just the beginning. Read more
















Solar Impulse to set off, again


Solar Impulse 2 will finally take off from the much-delayed New York leg of its journey. The plane, run entirely on solar power, will make its transatlantic journey. At a top speed of 75 km/h, this could take a while. Read more
