Zupta Contagion: Hard questions ANC must ask, but can’t



ANC stalwart Winnie Madikizela-Mandela on Thursday joined the procession of prominent people in society voicing concern about the state of the ANC and the country. “We cannot pretend we do not have problems and we cannot pretend things are not wrong,” she said before calling for “a whole layer of fresh leadership”. Part of the pretence is as a result of the constant dodging of questions about critical issues in the country. This week President Jacob Zuma fobbed off another parliamentary question on his contact with the Guptas. And the ANC will again let it pass. By RANJENI MUNUSAMY.

Third night of protest in Charlotte


Protesting in Charlotte, North Carolina, entered a third night on Thursday. Hundreds of protesters marched on Charlotte's police station, chanting "resistance is beautiful". They demanded officials release footage of the shooting of Keith Lamont Scott, whose killing sparked the unrest. Read More
















Major ivory bust in New York


Authorities in New York City have seized around $4.5 million in ivory. Comprising mostly carved items, statues and larger pieces, the haul was found in a store in Manhattan. District Attorney Cy Vance described the sale of ivory as "immoral". Read More
















Reagan auction reaches $6 million


A fortune has been raised at an auction of Reagan property. This included a piece of the Berlin wall, a pair of cowboy boots, and a diamond-encrusted ring worn by Nancy Reagan.
