Op-Ed: Welcome to The Age of Treason 
It was the summer of racism and now ’tis the autumn of treason as an increasingly hostile government, led by President Jacob Zuma, surrounded by securocrats, turns on students, private investigators, opposition party members, NGOs and private citizens, accusing them either of treason, of being traitors or “agents”. This is the same president who violated the Constitution, the same government that oversaw the massacre at Marikana and the earlier fatal shooting of protester Andries Tatane, the same government that has allowed one family to influence ministerial appointments. Syrian peace talks need a kick-start
The United Nations' envoy to Syria has indicated a desire to restart the country's failed peace process. But before such things can resume, Staffan de Mistura noted that a ceasefire, now long-broken, must be "revitalised". A 'swift kick in the bum' may be more appropriate for Syrian leadership by now.

Concordia Captain making evasive manoeuvres
Francesco Schettino, the captain infamous for capsizing a luxury yacht off the Tuscan island of Giglio, is to fight his jail sentence. Schettino was sentenced to 16 years in prison in 2015, but has yet to start serving jail time. Schettino steered the boat too close to the island while 'showing off' to a nightclub dancer, and fled the ship before passengers and crew.

Donald to join Australian staff
Allan Donald has joined the Australian cricket team as their fill-in bowling coach. Joining their upcoming Sri Lanka tour, unconfirmed speculation has indicated Donald may remain with the team for the South African Test tour later this year.
