"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greetings from Bed.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It’s a strange thing to be demonised for being Sick. A lack of empathy for suffering that people </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can’t</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> identify with can perhaps be understood – if not excused. If you’re not Black or Queer or Trans, you are not expected to appreciate what it feels like to live that experience. Quite the opposite in fact: cis straight white people can never claim to comprehend what it’s like to exist in society within such subjugated bodies.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But everyone has been ill at some time or another. Everyone has had a fever. Everyone has periodic aches and pains. Everyone has days when they feel so grim they can’t go to work because if they lift their head off the pillow they might throw up or pass out.</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And yet…</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those of us who wake up feeling like this </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">every single day</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are not treated with compassion, but with suspicion. The chronically Sick are maligned, even mocked, as malingerers. Why?</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do the Well lack the imagination to envision being trapped in the worst possible Groundhog Day?</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“You have a hangover, you’ve just run a marathon and you’re going down with flu. How do you feel?</span></i>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like someone with ME.”</span></i>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So began the awareness leaflet I received when I first got diagnosed with the post-viral energy-limiting chronic illness </span><a href=\"https://www.meaction.net/learn/what-is-me/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Myalgic Encephalomyelitis</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ME/CFS) 30 years ago. Studies comparing cancer, diabetes, stroke, heart disease and chronic renal failure have found that </span><a href=\"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTxwlf7LSrA\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe ME</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has the </span><a href=\"https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0132421\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lowest health-related quality of life score</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as well as significantly </span><a href=\"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5218818/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduced life expectancy</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since 2020, millions more Long Covid cousins have joined us here in Bed. But the lack of empathy suggests the Well just can’t conceive of feeling </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> lousy for </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> long. Or won’t.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I understand the Well's reluctance to acknowledge the reality of the Sick. It means becoming aware of unplumbed depths of vulnerability within yourselves. Even I, an 80% bedbound person, shy away from contemplating the gruelling daily existence of those with </span><a href=\"https://www.dialogues-mecfs.co.uk/films/severeme/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Very Severe ME </span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">such as </span><a href=\"https://me-pedia.org/wiki/Whitney_Dafoe\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whitney Dafoe</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: tube-fed, in constant pain and unable to tolerate any human interaction.</span>\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1532325 size-full\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Screen-Shot-2023-01-18-at-12.03.07.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"515\" height=\"328\" />\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Above: Whitney Dafoe summarises his quality of life in his paper “</span></i><a href=\"https://www.mdpi.com/2227-9032/9/5/504/htm\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extremely Severe ME/CFS - A Personal Account</span></i></a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">”</span></i>\r\n\r\nSo why does society immediately grant sympathy to someone with a diagnosis of cancer, but not those with <a href=\"https://chronicillnessinclusion.org.uk/2021/04/28/what-are-energy-impairment-and-elci/\">energy-limiting chronic illnesses</a> such as ME and Long Covid? Why is it that some Sick are portrayed as more worthy of pity than others?\r\n\r\nDon’t all Sick lives matter?\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-1530940 size-full\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Whitney-Dafoe2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1107\" height=\"676\" /> American photographer Whitney Dafoe aged 21, before he fell ill in 2004. (Photo: supplied)</p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I started writing this just before </span><a href=\"https://www.who.int/campaigns/world-aids-day\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Aids Day</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. There are striking parallels between how disdainfully the Sick were treated in the initial phases of the </span><a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epidemiology_of_HIV/AIDS#Global_HIV_data\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HIV pandemic </span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and how the suffering of those chronically ill with Long Covid is being downplayed now. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the eighties, AIDS was </span><a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HIV/AIDS_activism\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stigmatised</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as the </span><a href=\"https://www.thepinknews.com/2018/11/30/world-aids-day-1980s-headlines-tabloids/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Gay Plague”</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the West, but by the 1990s the highest infection rates were revealed to be amongst heterosexual women in sub-Saharan Africa. Misinformation generated by tabloid stereotypes can be fatal. It’s just as likely our </span><a href=\"https://me-pedia.org/wiki/Yuppie_Flu\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Yuppie Flu” </span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">disease will be shown to be most severely impacting poor people of the global south. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you remember the short gap between HIV-infection rates rocketing in South Africa in the late nineties, before exploding into hundreds of daily Aids deaths in the early 2000s? We currently inhabit a similar gap between Covid-19 infections early in the pandemic and the devastating social and economic impact of </span><a href=\"https://www.theguardian.com/society/2022/oct/12/long-covid-coronavirus-data-symptoms-causes-studies\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mass disability due to Long Covid</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is about to become apparent. But the lack of public health guidance and ubiquitous pics of </span><a href=\"https://www.meresearch.org.uk/what-is-me/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Limp White Woman</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as the face of fatigue means </span><a href=\"https://www.statnews.com/2021/05/10/with-long-covid-history-may-be-repeating-itself-among-people-of-color/ovid/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black people</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> don’t see post-viral chronic illness as something that might threaten them and aren’t taking precautions. </span>\r\n\r\n<b>Visit </b><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/?utm_source=direct&utm_medium=in_article_link&utm_campaign=homepage\"><b><i>Daily Maverick’s</i></b><b> home page</b></a><b> for more news, analysis and investigations</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">There are scientific similarities between HIV and ME as well. Both trigger widespread immune system dysfunction. However, where HIV shuts the immune system down, leaving the body vulnerable to other infections such as TB, ME ramps it up, maintaining an exhausting hypervigilant inflammatory state. This is what causes our unceasing fight-or-flight adrenal response and the permanent feeling of flu. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">President Mbeki’s </span><a href=\"https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/news/magazine/spr09aids/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HIV denialism caused the deaths of at least 330,000 South Africans</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. With </span><a href=\"https://www.thelancet.com/journals/eclinm/article/PIIS2589-5370(22)00491-6/fulltext\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">45% of Covid infections</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> causing long-term symptoms, how many more thousands falling chronically ill will it take before President Ramaphosa wakes up to the threat of mass disability?</span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://me-pedia.org/wiki/Nancy_Klimas#cite_note-35\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr Nancy Klimas</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Professor of Neuro-Immunology at the University of Miami, and one of the world’s foremost HIV and ME researchers, has stated that </span><a href=\"https://www.dialogues-mecfs.co.uk/films/severeme/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people with severe ME</span></a> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“experience a level of disability equal to that of patients with late-stage Aids and patients undergoing chemotherapy”.</span></i>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Please note that discredited </span><a href=\"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35628033/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Graded Exercise Therapy (GET)</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are to ME, what </span><a href=\"https://www.theguardian.com/world/2009/dec/16/dr-beetroot-dies-south-africa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tshabalala-Msimang’s ‘beetroot and garlic</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was to HIV. </span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://me-pedia.org/wiki/Graded_exercise_therapy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Graded exercise</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is contra-indicated as it can cause dangerous decline, pushing people previously only moderately ill into a wheelchair or permanently bedridden.</span>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read more in </span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick:</span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> “</span></i><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2009-12-16-the-end-of-the-road-for-manto/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The end of the road for Manto</span></i></a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">”</span></i>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The big difference between HIV and ME, of course, is that there are still zero effective drug regimens for the latter.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2009,</span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr Klimas was quoted in </span><a href=\"https://archive.nytimes.com/consults.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/10/15/readers-ask-a-virus-linked-to-chronic-fatigue-syndrome/index.html\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The New York Times</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:</span>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“I hope you are not saying that ME/CFS patients are not as ill as HIV patients. My HIV patients for the most part are hale and hearty thanks to three decades of intense and excellent research and billions of dollars invested. Many of my ME/CFS patients, on the other hand, are terribly ill and unable to work or participate in the care of their families. I split my clinical time between the two illnesses, and I can tell you if I had to choose… I would rather have HIV.”</span></i>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-01-08-kraken-covid-19-subvariant-detected-in-sa-but-is-unlikely-to-cause-rise-in-severe-infections/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pandemic continuing unabated</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the prevalence of people living with post-viral, energy-limiting chronic illness, including Long Covid, will soon </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-05-11-we-are-ignoring-long-covid-at-our-peril-say-those-living-with-it/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">outnumber </span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the nearly 40 million </span><a href=\"https://www.who.int/data/gho/data/themes/hiv-aids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people living with HIV</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Everyone has days when they feel so grim they can’t go to work because if they lift their head off the pillow they might throw up or pass out.</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And yet…</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those of us who wake up feeling like this </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">every single day</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are not treated with compassion, but with suspicion. The chronically Sick are maligned, even mocked, as malingerers. Why?</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do the Well lack the imagination to envision being trapped in the worst possible Groundhog Day?</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“You have a hangover, you’ve just run a marathon and you’re going down with flu. How do you feel?</span></i>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like someone with ME.”</span></i>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So began the awareness leaflet I received when I first got diagnosed with the post-viral energy-limiting chronic illness </span><a href=\"https://www.meaction.net/learn/what-is-me/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Myalgic Encephalomyelitis</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ME/CFS) 30 years ago. Studies comparing cancer, diabetes, stroke, heart disease and chronic renal failure have found that </span><a href=\"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTxwlf7LSrA\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe ME</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has the </span><a href=\"https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0132421\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lowest health-related quality of life score</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as well as significantly </span><a href=\"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5218818/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduced life expectancy</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since 2020, millions more Long Covid cousins have joined us here in Bed. But the lack of empathy suggests the Well just can’t conceive of feeling </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> lousy for </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> long. Or won’t.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I understand the Well's reluctance to acknowledge the reality of the Sick. It means becoming aware of unplumbed depths of vulnerability within yourselves. Even I, an 80% bedbound person, shy away from contemplating the gruelling daily existence of those with </span><a href=\"https://www.dialogues-mecfs.co.uk/films/severeme/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Very Severe ME </span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">such as </span><a href=\"https://me-pedia.org/wiki/Whitney_Dafoe\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whitney Dafoe</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: tube-fed, in constant pain and unable to tolerate any human interaction.</span>\r\n\r\n<img class=\"alignnone wp-image-1532325 size-full\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Screen-Shot-2023-01-18-at-12.03.07.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"515\" height=\"328\" />\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Above: Whitney Dafoe summarises his quality of life in his paper “</span></i><a href=\"https://www.mdpi.com/2227-9032/9/5/504/htm\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extremely Severe ME/CFS - A Personal Account</span></i></a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">”</span></i>\r\n\r\nSo why does society immediately grant sympathy to someone with a diagnosis of cancer, but not those with <a href=\"https://chronicillnessinclusion.org.uk/2021/04/28/what-are-energy-impairment-and-elci/\">energy-limiting chronic illnesses</a> such as ME and Long Covid? (Photo: supplied)[/caption]\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I started writing this just before </span><a href=\"https://www.who.int/campaigns/world-aids-day\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Aids Day</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. There are striking parallels between how disdainfully the Sick were treated in the initial phases of the </span><a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epidemiology_of_HIV/AIDS#Global_HIV_data\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HIV pandemic </span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and how the suffering of those chronically ill with Long Covid is being downplayed now. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the eighties, AIDS was </span><a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HIV/AIDS_activism\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stigmatised</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as the </span><a href=\"https://www.thepinknews.com/2018/11/30/world-aids-day-1980s-headlines-tabloids/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Gay Plague”</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the West, but by the 1990s the highest infection rates were revealed to be amongst heterosexual women in sub-Saharan Africa. Misinformation generated by tabloid stereotypes can be fatal. It’s just as likely our </span><a href=\"https://me-pedia.org/wiki/Yuppie_Flu\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Yuppie Flu” </span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">disease will be shown to be most severely impacting poor people of the global south. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you remember the short gap between HIV-infection rates rocketing in South Africa in the late nineties, before exploding into hundreds of daily Aids deaths in the early 2000s? We currently inhabit a similar gap between Covid-19 infections early in the pandemic and the devastating social and economic impact of </span><a href=\"https://www.theguardian.com/society/2022/oct/12/long-covid-coronavirus-data-symptoms-causes-studies\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mass disability due to Long Covid</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is about to become apparent. But the lack of public health guidance and ubiquitous pics of </span><a href=\"https://www.meresearch.org.uk/what-is-me/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Limp White Woman</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as the face of fatigue means </span><a href=\"https://www.statnews.com/2021/05/10/with-long-covid-history-may-be-repeating-itself-among-people-of-color/ovid/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black people</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> don’t see post-viral chronic illness as something that might threaten them and aren’t taking precautions. </span>\r\n\r\n<b>Visit </b><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/?utm_source=direct&utm_medium=in_article_link&utm_campaign=homepage\"><b><i>Daily Maverick’s</i></b><b> home page</b></a><b> for more news, analysis and investigations</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">There are scientific similarities between HIV and ME as well. Both trigger widespread immune system dysfunction. However, where HIV shuts the immune system down, leaving the body vulnerable to other infections such as TB, ME ramps it up, maintaining an exhausting hypervigilant inflammatory state. This is what causes our unceasing fight-or-flight adrenal response and the permanent feeling of flu. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">President Mbeki’s </span><a href=\"https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/news/magazine/spr09aids/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HIV denialism caused the deaths of at least 330,000 South Africans</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. With </span><a href=\"https://www.thelancet.com/journals/eclinm/article/PIIS2589-5370(22)00491-6/fulltext\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">45% of Covid infections</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> causing long-term symptoms, how many more thousands falling chronically ill will it take before President Ramaphosa wakes up to the threat of mass disability?</span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://me-pedia.org/wiki/Nancy_Klimas#cite_note-35\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr Nancy Klimas</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Professor of Neuro-Immunology at the University of Miami, and one of the world’s foremost HIV and ME researchers, has stated that </span><a href=\"https://www.dialogues-mecfs.co.uk/films/severeme/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people with severe ME</span></a> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“experience a level of disability equal to that of patients with late-stage Aids and patients undergoing chemotherapy”.</span></i>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Please note that discredited </span><a href=\"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35628033/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Graded Exercise Therapy (GET)</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are to ME, what </span><a href=\"https://www.theguardian.com/world/2009/dec/16/dr-beetroot-dies-south-africa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tshabalala-Msimang’s ‘beetroot and garlic</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was to HIV. </span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://me-pedia.org/wiki/Graded_exercise_therapy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Graded exercise</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is contra-indicated as it can cause dangerous decline, pushing people previously only moderately ill into a wheelchair or permanently bedridden.</span>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read more in </span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick:</span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> “</span></i><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2009-12-16-the-end-of-the-road-for-manto/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The end of the road for Manto</span></i></a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">”</span></i>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The big difference between HIV and ME, of course, is that there are still zero effective drug regimens for the latter.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2009,</span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr Klimas was quoted in </span><a href=\"https://archive.nytimes.com/consults.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/10/15/readers-ask-a-virus-linked-to-chronic-fatigue-syndrome/index.html\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The New York Times</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:</span>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“I hope you are not saying that ME/CFS patients are not as ill as HIV patients. My HIV patients for the most part are hale and hearty thanks to three decades of intense and excellent research and billions of dollars invested. Many of my ME/CFS patients, on the other hand, are terribly ill and unable to work or participate in the care of their families. I split my clinical time between the two illnesses, and I can tell you if I had to choose… I would rather have HIV.”</span></i>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-01-08-kraken-covid-19-subvariant-detected-in-sa-but-is-unlikely-to-cause-rise-in-severe-infections/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pandemic continuing unabated</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the prevalence of people living with post-viral, energy-limiting chronic illness, including Long Covid, will soon </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-05-11-we-are-ignoring-long-covid-at-our-peril-say-those-living-with-it/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">outnumber </span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the nearly 40 million </span><a href=\"https://www.who.int/data/gho/data/themes/hiv-aids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people living with HIV</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
