"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assessments are under way in Cape Town today as after another cold front arrived overnight – the latest in a series of cold fronts that have left thousands without warmth and shelter. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The City of Cape Town said on Thursday morning that the worst-affected areas include Khayelitsha, Lwandle in Strand, Nomzamo, Gugulethu, Masiphumelele, Macassar, Sir Lowry’s Pass, Mfuleni, Tafelsig, Vygieskraal and Ocean View.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A warning has been issued for Level 8 weather disruptions – strong winds and heavy rainfall – in the City of Cape Town, Drakenstein and Stellenbosch municipalities. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The City’s Disaster Management Centre confirmed emergency calls from the Wynberg area of roofs being blown off and damaged overhead electrical wires. Four homes were affected and the occupants relocated to alternative accommodation. Claims that a tornado was responsible are as yet unverified, and investigations and assessments were being undertaken on Thursday morning. I’ve been in areas across the metro to assess conditions and to play my part in handing out flood relief kits to affected residents,” said Carl Pophaim, the mayoral committee member for human settlements in the City of Cape Town. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While clean-up operations begin, some residents are struggling to get to work. Our houses have [been] blown away by the heavy winds. I left my shack that is leaking, so now we are in trouble.” </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Busisiwe Keote from Mfuleni said getting to work was not easy. “I’m currently wet but I’m going to work. Where it is feasible, such as where the water is not too deep, or damming up, or depending on local conditions, relief is being provided,” Pophaim said. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assessments were continuing. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“As a City we also encourage Capetonians to make use of the donation facilities and to support relief organisations. It is still assessing the damage in communities it serves, including Masiphumelele, Capricorn, Vrygrond, Overcome, Redhill and Ocean View. The organisation needs clothing, bulk foods and blankets.
