"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When someone dumped a dead body on an illegal dump in Delft, Cape Town, three months ago, Nomsobo Gabhayi and a group of other women decided to take action.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every Saturday from 9am to 1pm, the women collect rubbish and clear illegal dumps in Section 29 in Delft.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“A waste picker saw the body and alerted the residents. Afterwards, we decided to remove dumps to prevent criminals from hiding dead bodies here again,” said Gabhayi.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She said vegetable vendors and owners of barber and spaza shops discard rotten vegetables, hair and expired food on the dumps.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Community leader and volunteer Nosicelo Bobi said the cleaning initiative is aimed at discouraging littering. “We want to stay in a clean environment,” she said. “If everyone gets involved, we will not have illegal tips here.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The volunteers watch over the spots they have cleaned. “We shout at residents who try to dump rubbish again,” said Bobi.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Some residents shout back at us and say we act as if we are City officials, but we stand our ground.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They put the collected rubbish in bags from Plastic SA and burn it, she said.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-1341154 size-full\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/delftrubbish-vincentlali-20220728_extra_large.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"540\" /> The women burn the collected rubbish.
