But while the </span><a href=\"https://psycnet.apa.org/doiLanding?doi=10.1037%2F0033-2909.132.6.823\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">psychological benefits are consistent</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for many people, researchers don’t completely agree on why or how writing helps.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One theory suggests that bottling up emotions can lead to </span><a href=\"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/0277953688903978\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">psychological distress</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It stands to reason, then, that writing might increase mental health because it offers a safe, confidential and free way to disclose emotions that were </span><a href=\"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1093/clipsy.bph062\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">previously bottled up</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, recent studies have begun to show how an increase in </span><a href=\"https://www.innermelbpsychology.com.au/self-awareness-mental-health/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">self-awareness</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, rather than simply disclosing emotions, could be the key to these improvements in mental health.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In essence, self-awareness is being able to turn your </span><a href=\"https://philarchive.org/archive/MORSP-2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">attention inward towards the self</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. By turning our attention inward, we can become more aware of our traits, behaviour, feelings, beliefs, values and motivations.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research suggests that becoming more self-aware can be beneficial in a variety of ways. It can increase our </span><a href=\"https://www.ajpe.org/content/83/7/6920.abstract\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">confidence</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and encourage us to be more </span><a href=\"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5114878/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">accepting of others</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It can lead to higher </span><a href=\"https://www.emerald.com/insight/content/doi/10.1108/EJTD-04-2015-0031/full/html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">job satisfaction</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and push us to become </span><a href=\"https://iaap-journals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/j.1464-0597.1991.tb01002.x\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more effective leaders</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It can also help us to </span><a href=\"https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Paul-Silvia/publication/239808850_Self-Awareness_and_Constructive_Functioning_Revisiting_the_Human_Dilemma/links/00b7d5342fa835637b000000/Self-Awareness-and-Constructive-Functioning-Revisiting-the-Human-Dilemma.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exercise more self-control</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and make </span><a href=\"https://www.researchgate.net/publication/319173962_Emotional_Self-Awareness_and_Strategic_Decision_Making_in_Private_School_Enterprises_in_Nairobi_County_Kenya\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">better decisions</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> aligned with our long-term goals.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Self-awareness is a spectrum and, with practice, we can all improve. Writing might be particularly helpful in increasing self-awareness because it can be </span><a href=\"https://positivepsychology.com/building-self-awareness-activities/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">practised daily</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. </span><a href=\"https://www.innermelbpsychology.com.au/self-awareness-mental-health/#:%7E:text=Awareness%20of%20these%20aspects%20of,Michael%20Singer%2C%20The%20Untethered%20Soul.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rereading our writing</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can also give us a deeper insight into our thoughts, feelings, behaviour and beliefs.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are three types of writing which can improve your self-awareness and, in turn, your mental health.</span>\r\n\r\n<strong>Expressive writing</strong>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Expressive writing is often used in </span><a href=\"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S2212420919313172\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">therapeutic settings</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where people are asked to write about their thoughts and feelings related to a stressful life event. This type of writing aims to help emotionally process </span><a href=\"https://link.springer.com/referenceworkentry/10.1007%2F978-1-4419-1005-9_1225\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">something difficult</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research shows that expressive writing can </span><a href=\"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1744388118306157\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enhance self-awareness</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, ultimately decreasing </span><a href=\"https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Lucile-Chanquoy/publication/338528822_Expressive_writing_in_school_children_Effects_on_well-being_and_working_memory/links/5f1060b6a6fdcc3ed70b9a13/Expressive-writing-in-school-children-Effects-on-well-being-and-working-memory.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">depressive symptoms</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, </span><a href=\"https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fpsyg.2020.01334/full?fbclid=IwAR3NMTOTohe6U9VVTjEsq0KVWgi2zNDXfTlshewF94NmKIV8krbX7UKar34\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anxious thoughts</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and </span><a href=\"https://www.journal.atmph-specialissues.org/uploads/179/7459_pdf.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">perceived stress</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<strong>Reflective writing</strong>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reflective writing is regularly used in professional settings, often as a way to help nurses, doctors, teachers, psychologists and social workers become </span><a href=\"https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/01488376.2018.1476300\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more effective at their jobs</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Reflective writing aims to give people a way to assess their beliefs and actions explicitly for learning and development.</span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://www.macmillanihe.com/page/detail/Reflective-Writing/?K=9781352010084\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Writing reflectively</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> requires a person to ask themselves questions and continuously be open, curious and analytical. It can </span><a href=\"https://www.emerald.com/insight/content/doi/10.1108/JWAM-10-2015-003/full/html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increase self-awareness</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by helping people learn from their experiences and interactions. This can improve professional and personal relationships as well as work performance, which are key indicators of </span><a href=\"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0924977X19318693\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">good mental health</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<strong>Creative writing</strong>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poems, short stories, novellas and novels are all considered forms of creative writing. Usually, creative writing employs the imagination as well as, or instead of, memory, and uses literary devices like imagery and metaphor to convey meaning.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Writing creatively offers a unique way to explore thoughts, feelings, ideas and beliefs. For instance, you could write a science fiction novel that represents your concerns about climate change or a children’s story that speaks to your beliefs about friendship. You could even write a poem from the perspective of an owl as a way to represent your insomnia.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Writing creatively about challenging experiences, </span><a href=\"https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/0030222820976277\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">like grief</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, can also offer a way to communicate to others something which you feel is too complicated or difficult to say directly.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creative writing encourages people to choose their words, metaphors and images in a way that really captures what they’re trying to convey. This creative decision-making can lead to </span><a href=\"https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/08893675.2018.1505250\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased self-awareness and self-esteem</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as well as </span><a href=\"https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/08893675.2021.1921474\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">improved mental health</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<strong>Writing for self-awareness</strong>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Self-awareness is a key component for </span><a href=\"https://www.innermelbpsychology.com.au/self-awareness-mental-health/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">good mental health</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and writing is a great place to start.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why not take some time to write down your feelings about a particularly stressful event that has happened during the pandemic? Or reflect on a difficult work situation from the last year and consider what you have learned from it?</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you prefer to do something more creative, then try responding to this prompt by writing a poem or story:</span>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think about the ways your home reveals the moment we are currently in. Is your pantry packed with flour? Do you have new objects or pets in your home to stave off loneliness or boredom? What you can see from your window that reveals something about this historic moment?</span></p>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each of these writing prompts will give you a chance to reflect on this past year, ask yourself important questions, and make creative choices.
