"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After holding off some stiff competition from Egyptian giants Al Ahly and Tunisia’s Espérance respectively – </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tshwane’s</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Mamelodi Sundowns and Wydad Casablanca </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of Morocco</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are set to butt heads on Sunday, 5 November in the inaugural evening final of the </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-07-14-touted-as-the-tournament-to-alter-african-soccer-caf-says-african-football-league-will-start-in-october/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Africa Football League</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (AFL).</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sundowns withstood the cauldron-esque conditions at Cairo Stadium to beat the Red Devils 1-0 on aggregate in the two-legged semifinal of Africa’s new soccer competition. After securing a hard-fought 1-0 at home, Masandawana were able to hold Al Ahly 0-0 in Egypt on Wednesday, 1 November.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Mamelodi Sundowns showed character, guile and lots of perseverance in what was a difficult 97/98 minutes against a very strong team. But I must be honest and tell you that this semifinal was won in South Africa in the first leg. And neither wants to be known as the losers of the first-ever final of a competition that the Confederation of African Football (Caf) has touted as a “gamechanger” for the continent’s soccer development.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Marginal edge amid fine margins</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wydad head into the encounter carrying a marginal psychological edge over their South African rivals. Of the last 11 matches between the pair, the Moroccan club boasts four wins to Sundowns’ three.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four of the clashes between the teams have ended in stalemates. The most recent draw was in May 2023, when Wydad knocked Sundowns out of the Caf Champions League in the semifinals. The game ended two-all in Tshwane. The reverse fixture of the final is Tshwane, taking place on 11 November.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Key Sundowns players are nursing some knocks ahead of the first half of the final battle. As they were during the semifinal against Al Ahly. But Mokwena is not particularly perturbed. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“The quality of the players we are without is very important. The likes of Peter Shalulile, Lucas Ribeiro, Sipho Mbule and Thapelo Morena,” said the Sundowns head coach. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“But the absence of others gives very good opportunities for the other players and for us to use the depth of the squad. Instead of focusing on what we don’t have, I would rather focus on what we have.
