Now, a new </span><a href=\"http://port.ac.uk/news-events-and-blogs/news/using-art-and-song-to-help-solve-south-african-plastic-waste-crisis#:~:text=Health%20Revolution%20Plastics-,A%20pioneering%20scheme%20using%20street%20art%2C%20theatre%20and%20song%20aims,the%20environment%20and%20human%20health.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">initiative</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is taking a novel approach to addressing this issue: street art, theatre and song.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The disposal of plastic waste in South Africa leaves a lot to be desired, say residents of Mpumalanga. This is according to a survey conducted by the </span><a href=\"https://wasteaid.org/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Revolution Plastics</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> initiative, which found that 87% of participants are not satisfied with how their waste is managed.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is no surprise given that, in South Africa, about 37% of households do not receive weekly waste removal services and 196 kilotons of household waste is left uncollected, according to the South African Pathways </span><a href=\"https://wasteroadmap.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/046-CSIR-Final_Report-Reducing-Plastics-Pollution-Pathways.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> released by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the case for many of the Mpumalanga locals surveyed, 84% of whom disposed of their plastic waste through open burning and dumping, according to the South African Pathways </span><a href=\"https://wasteroadmap.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/046-CSIR-Final_Report-Reducing-Plastics-Pollution-Pathways.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is typical of areas like Mpumalanga, says Dr Cressida Bowyer, deputy director of Revolution Plastics.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Visit </b><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/?utm_source=direct&utm_medium=in_article_link&utm_campaign=homepage\"><b><i>Daily Maverick’s</i></b><b> home page</b></a><b> for more news, analysis and investigations</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Some waste is taken to the municipal dumpsite if transport is available and the motivation is there,” says Bowyer. This is accomplished through using</span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trusted community voices from the regional Ndebele culture to overcome cultural and language barriers.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Masibambisane Music Crew wrote a song that has been recorded and a video is currently in production, says Bowyer. “The song will be performed live at community events and the video will be shared on social media,” she said.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lyrics are aimed at educating locals about recycling and were written by local artist, Muhlangu Nkosinathi.
