Be adventurous</strong></h4>\r\nPlenty of unusual or unconventional foods that might not be a normal part of your diet are full of nutrients and microorganisms that can have many health benefits.\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://www.self.com/story/beyond-sushi-newbies-guide-sea-vegetables\">Sea vegetables</a>, for instance. These have existed for thousands of years and are a staple food in traditional Asian and coastal cultures. These vegetables are <a href=\"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7245532/\">nutrient dense</a> and <a href=\"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8232781/\">contain antioxidants</a> (molecules that neutralise harmful “free radicals” in the body), essential fatty acids, fibre, iodine and proteins not found in land-based foods.\r\n<div class=\"slot clear\" data-id=\"17\">\r\n<div class=\"promo\">\r\n<div class=\"lazyload-wrapper \">\r\n<div class=\"MuiBoxroot-0-1-95 MuiBoxroot-0-1-96 makeStylesbox-0-1-94\">\r\n<div>\r\n\r\nThis is due to the unique growing conditions and biological adaptations of sea vegetables, which lead to a distinct <a href=\"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2468550X22001460\">nutrient profile</a> – making them a valuable addition to the diet. <a href=\"https://fppn.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s43014-023-00132-5\">Some of their benefits</a> include protecting against cancer and being antiviral, preventing blood clots, regulating cholesterol levels and having antioxidant properties. They <a href=\"https://www.liebertpub.com/doi/10.1089/jmf.2012.2468\">may also prevent</a> cardiovascular disease and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.\r\n\r\nCertain sea vegetables – such as algae – can be added to other foods to boost their <a href=\"https://doi.org/10.3390%2Fmd18060301\">taste and health benefits</a>. Research shows that adding algae to foods such as cheddar cheese and toasted bread is a great way to increase <a href=\"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.foodchem.2023.138322\">protein content</a>. The blue-green algae spirulina is <a href=\"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0308814623029400?via%3Dihub\">particularly beneficial</a> – packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and protein. It’s even <a href=\"https://doi.org/10.3390%2Fmd20050299\">used as a supplement</a> by Nasa astronauts on space missions.\r\n\r\nSea moss, edible seaweeds (such as nori) and algae (such as mozuku) are just some of the sea vegetables you might consider putting on the menu.\r\n\r\nBitter greens – such as <a href=\"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9002813/\">dandelion</a>, <a href=\"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4425174/\">beetroot</a>, <a href=\"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9253158/\">nettles</a> and <a href=\"https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/19476337.2020.1833988\">mustard greens</a> – are all nutrient dense and have antioxidant properties. They’re also shown to support gut health and digestion as they’re <a href=\"https://doi.org/10.3390%2Fnu14071434\">packed with fibre</a>.\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S095816691630266X?via%253Dihub\">Fermented foods</a>, such as kimchi, sauerkraut and kefir, are associated with <a href=\"https://www.mdpi.com/2304-8158/12/4/687\">lower risk of chronic diseases</a> (including heart disease, type 2 diabetes and cancer) and better <a href=\"https://www.mdpi.com/1422-0067/24/3/2665\">weight management</a>. They’re also rich in <a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-01-11-probiotics-and-the-case-for-a-balanced-diet/\">probiotics</a>, which promote <a href=\"https://analyticalsciencejournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1002/elsc.201100179?casa_token=lmVooLJxGIsAAAAA:wVrJwtHsg5WdxOx8jmGv6mJCTqv-EhQ-ePgBAbyk35WfwtW1BbWBcNu6OIqsV8KKJ8MnT38aFY3AV8tC\">gut health and improve digestion</a>.\r\n<h4><strong>2. Season generously</strong></h4>\r\nUsing a variety of herbs and spices when cooking not only enhances the overall sensory experience of your meal, they also provide several wellbeing benefits.\r\n\r\nSpices such as <a href=\"https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fnut.2022.1012023/full\">turmeric, ginger, garlic</a>, as well as <a href=\"https://europepmc.org/article/med/10077878\">cinnamon</a>, <a href=\"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1878535210001899\">cloves</a> and <a href=\"https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/10408398.2013.800832?casa_token=PsZZpLyLdyEAAAAA:CCLFvMQti1U820j3RAk72NHALPMuBdVSw2ptU6MOgLnlXzeMxcuFohxjDFp1gxqKvsmwNNlrXSO6CQ\">oregano</a>, are thought to have <a href=\"https://www.eurekaselect.com/article/17443\">antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties</a> due to the array of chemical compounds they contain.\r\n\r\nMany of these chemical compounds complement each other – and may even counteract several disorders, including <a href=\"https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/nutrition/articles/10.3389/fnut.2022.1012023/full\">heart disease</a>, <a href=\"https://doi.org/10.1186%2Fs12967-018-1381-2\">chronic inflammation</a> and <a href=\"https://www.scirp.org/journal/paperinformation?paperid=90563\">diabetes</a>.\r\n<div class=\"grid-ten large-grid-nine grid-last content-body content entry-content instapaper_body inline-promos\">\r\n\r\nCinnamon has also been shown to <a href=\"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1155/2019/4138534\">help regulate blood sugar levels</a>, which is particularly important for managing diabetes.\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://doi.org/10.3109/09637486.2011.627841\">Ginger, peppermint and fennel</a> are all associated with better digestive health. But if you’re looking to improve your immune health, you should aim to include plenty of <a href=\"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7815254/\">garlic, thyme and oregano</a> in your meals.\r\n\r\nBecause of how flavourful herbs and spices are, you’ll probably use less salt and sugar when cooking your meals – which could <a href=\"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2212267223012935\">reduce the risk of conditions</a> such as hypertension, diabetes and heart disease. Chilli peppers may also be a useful weight management tool, as the capsaicin they contain (which causes the spicy sensation) boosts metabolism and <a href=\"https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/09637486.2016.1258044\">promotes fat burning</a>.\r\n\r\nOne last benefit of using herbs such as <a href=\"https://doi.org/10.3389%2Ffnut.2020.606124\">saffron</a> and <a href=\"https://doi.org/10.22038%2Fijbms.2020.45269.10541\">rosemary</a> is that they’re are linked to improved mood and cognitive function. Even the <a href=\"https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1016/j.ejbas.2017.04.002\">aroma of rosemary</a> may be enough to enhance memory and concentration.\r\n<h4><strong>3. Eat seasonally and locally</strong></h4>\r\nIncorporating seasonal food into your diet is not only good for your health, it’s also good for <a href=\"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8465681/\">the environment</a>.\r\n\r\nSeasonal fruit and vegetables are often fresher, taste better and may have <a href=\"https://doi.org/10.1017/s0029665113003753\">higher nutrient content</a> because they do not need to be stored and transported. Locally grown, seasonal food usually needs <a href=\"https://www.mdpi.com/2304-8158/10/4/719\">fewer chemicals and preservatives</a> because they don’t need to be transported far distances. And because these foods don’t spend as much time in storage and transit, there’s less chance of spoilage and waste.\r\n\r\nIt’s worth noting, however, that while storage and transportation may be linked to some loss of micronutrients, these <a href=\"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0889157517300418?via%3Dihub\">losses are considered minimal</a> – especially in relation to not eating fruit and veg at all.\r\n\r\nIf you can, try preserving some fresh seasonal produce – either by dehydrating, canning, freezing or <a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-04-22-fermenting-foods-cementing-friendships-cabbages-and-kraut/\">fermenting them</a>. This extends their shelf life and preserves some of their <a href=\"https://scijournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1002/jsfa.2825\">nutritional value</a>.\r\n<h4><strong>How you eat</strong></h4>\r\nIt isn’t just your diet that’s important in helping you eat more nutritiously. The way you eat is also important.\r\n\r\nFor instance, <a href=\"https://www.bda.uk.com/resource/mindful-eating.html\">mindful eating</a> can help promote a healthier relationship with food, which can in turn <a href=\"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7219460/\">improve digestion</a> and <a href=\"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10100015/\">weight management</a>. This is because mindful eating emphasises being more conscious of your hunger and fullness queues, which can <a href=\"https://doi.org/10.1177/1559827615569684\">prevent overeating</a>.\r\n\r\nThe more aware you are of the food you’re eating, the healthier and more balanced the <a href=\"https://psycnet.apa.org/record/2016-52932-001\">food choices you may make</a>.\r\n\r\nThe size of your plate is also important when it comes to maintaining healthy eating habits. For example, smaller plates give a <a href=\"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.appet.2023.106542\">visual perception of more food</a>. In a society where overeating is common, using the correct portion sizes may help you eat a <a href=\"https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/proceedings-of-the-nutrition-society/article/understanding-the-science-of-portion-control-and-the-art-of-downsizing/4B2368D8692A17995D4DC6E312832DDC\">more balanced diet</a>.\r\n\r\nBy making just a few small changes to your daily diet, you can improve how nutritious it is and boost your health and wellbeing. <strong>DM <iframe style=\"border: none !important;\" src=\"https://counter.theconversation.com/content/232942/count.gif?distributor=republish-lightbox-advanced\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\"></iframe></strong>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://theconversation.com/three-ways-to-eat-more-nutritiously-232942\"><em>This story was first published in</em> The Conversation</a>.<em> </em>\r\n\r\n</div>\r\n<div class=\"grid-ten grid-prepend-two large-grid-nine grid-last content-topics topic-list\"></div>\r\n</div>\r\n</div>\r\n</div>\r\n</div>\r\n</div>",
